The name

From nugget to kangaroo

The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.

This nugget and three other famous ones, in designs by Stuart Devlin, appeared on the first years of the gold coins that bear the kangaroo today. They began as The Australian Nugget.

Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series

The kangaroos of the gold coins

The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. The bars carry their kangaroos as a pattern on the back.

There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

  • Investment goal: With silver bars you can protect your wealth very effectively against inflation
  • Brilliant Uncirculated quality from the renowned Perth Mint
  • Ideal denomination of 1 ounce (31.1 grams) for flexible investment options

The silver bar Kangaroo from the Perth Mint combines Australian tradition with modern inflation hedge. As Australia's oldest active mint, founded in 1899, the Perth Mint stands for the highest quality standards and impressive minting artistry.

Unique Design with Australian Identity

The obverse of the bar is adorned with the majestic swan logo of the Perth Mint — a tribute to the distinctive black swans with red beaks that are native to Lake Monger north of Perth. This iconic symbol is framed by the inscription "THE PERTH MINT AUSTRALIA" along with precise details of fineness and weight.

The reverse reveals a fascinating special feature: multiple leaping kangaroos whose polished surfaces stand out impressively against the matte background. This innovative design gives the bar its distinctive character.

Perfect Characteristics for Long-Term Investment

With its compact dimensions of 47.60 x 27.60 x 3.00 mm and the standardised weight of one ounce, this bar is ideally suited as crisis protection. The exceptionally high fineness of 999.9/1000 guarantees maximum value stability. Particularly attractive for investors: gains are tax-free after a holding period of one year.

Industrial Demand Meets Investor Interest

The growing demand for silver in future-oriented industries such as electronics, solar technology, and medical technology makes this bar a forward-looking investment. The limited availability of the precious metal combined with its important role in industry promises long-term value stability.

Practical Storage and Handling

Each bar is delivered in a protective coin pouch that ensures safe storage and protects the flawless surface from damage. The handy size allows for effortless storage and makes the bar a practical investment for private investors.
