Hardly any bullion coin is as steeped in national pride. The Silver Libertad is among the most famous bullion coins in the world, yet it is anything but a mass-produced product. With the 2026 year of issue, the Casa de Moneda de México continues a series whose silver ounce featuring the Goddess of Victory has been issued since 1982. Investors value it for its precious metal content, collectors for its three-dimensional, almost sculptural relief. With a diameter of 40 millimeters, the Mexican Onza ranks among the largest silver coins in the 1-ounce class. It is delivered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in a protective coin capsule.
A Design That Tells a Story
Obverse: The Libertad Goddess of Victory in Front of the Volcanoes
At the center hovers the winged Goddess of Victory, Victoria. In her raised right hand she holds a laurel wreath, in her left a broken chain, symbolizing the shaking off of colonial rule. Her model is the famous Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City. The Independence Column was erected in 1910 to mark the hundredth anniversary of the independence struggle. Behind the figure rise the two volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, while agave and prickly pear cactus grow in the foreground. Surrounding this are the inscriptions "1 ONZA," "PLATA PURA," and "2026 LEY .999," along with the Mo mint mark of the Mexico City mint.
Reverse: National Coat of Arms Framed by Historical Eagles
At the center of the other side is the modern coat of arms of the United Mexican States: an eagle perched on a nopal cactus, devouring a snake. It is encircled by the legend "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS." Around it are arranged ten historical eagle depictions, ranging from the founding motif of Tenochtitlan from the Codex Mendoza to the coat-of-arms variants of the 19th and 20th centuries. Since the year 2000, Libertad coins of one ounce or more have featured this richly detailed design. A small history lesson, struck in precious metal.
Casa de Moneda de México: The Oldest Mint in the Americas
The Mexican mint was founded as early as 1535, meaning it has been striking coins for almost five centuries. Mexican silver pesos were long accepted as a global trade currency, in Asia as much as in Europe and North America. This tradition lives on in the Mexico Libertad. One special feature: the coin carries no stamped face value. Its value is determined by the current daily silver price.
What is particularly exciting is the mintage figures. They have traditionally been well below those of the major bullion programs, and the previous year's issue, 2025, came onto the market in an exceptionally small quantity. For 2026, dealers cite a mintage of no more than 100,000 pieces. Official figures are usually published by the Banco de México only in the following year.
Why Silver? Substance Instead of Promises
For thousands of years, the white metal has accompanied humanity as money, as adornment, and as a sign of prosperity. Paper money relies solely on trust in governments and central banks. Precious metal, on the other hand, possesses an intrinsic, physical value. It does not age, does not rust, and retains its properties across generations.
- Industrially sought after: indispensable in electronics, photovoltaics, and medical technology
- Limited supply: mining output cannot be increased indefinitely
- Affordable: a significantly lower entry threshold than gold
- High liquidity: traded worldwide, easy to sell at any time
- Flexible: suitable as a means of exchange even in small units
- Tax-attractive: in Germany, capital gains are generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year
As a form of crisis protection, silver has repeatedly proven its worth in politically and economically turbulent times. Many investors use it to diversify their wealth more broadly. Others see it as a building block for retirement planning that can be conveniently passed on to children and grandchildren.
Libertad, Maple Leaf, Britannia, or Vienna Philharmonic?
Anyone wishing to buy an ounce of silver has plenty of choice. The Canadian Maple Leaf offers an even slightly higher fineness of 999.9/1,000 and is issued in very large quantities. The British Britannia and the Vienna Philharmonic impress with a stamped face value and high recognition throughout Europe. However, all three are smaller than the Mexican ounce. The Libertad stands out with a larger diameter, an exceptionally three-dimensional relief, and noticeably lower mintages. In return, its premium is usually somewhat higher. For many buyers, this is exactly the appeal: precious metal and collector's value combined in a single piece.
The coin also has its strengths compared to silver bars. It is instantly recognizable, government-guaranteed, and can be continued as part of a year-set collection. Those focused purely on metal value, however, will find bars a simpler alternative.
Freedom, independence, and almost 500 years of minting tradition: the Libertad 2026 combines all of this in a single troy ounce of fine silver.
