Some coins are bought for their metal. Others for their presence. The 1/2 oz Gold Mexico Libertad 2026 Reverse Proof combines both: a half troy ounce of fine gold and a minting quality that even seasoned collectors find astonishing. With this year's edition, Casa de Moneda de México continues the Reverse Proof line of the Gold Libertad, which has only been available in the 1/2 oz and 1 oz sizes since 2018.
Reverse Proof: Shine and Frost Swap Roles
In the classic Proof finish, the field is mirrored while the relief remains frosted. Reverse Proof does exactly the opposite. The winged Goddess of Victory, her flowing robe, and the column gleam with a mirror-like shine. The field behind them, by contrast, appears velvety matte. This creates an almost sculptural depth that reveals an astonishing amount of detail on a diameter of just 29 millimeters.
Victoria holds a laurel wreath in her right hand and the broken chain, a symbol of liberation, in her left. The design is modeled after the famous Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City. Behind her rise the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, while an agave and a prickly pear cactus frame the scene at the lower edge. The inscriptions read "1/2 ONZA", "ORO PURO", and "2026 LEY .999".
The reverse [coat-of-arms side] shows the Mexican national coat of arms: an eagle perched on a nopal cactus, holding a snake in its beak and talon, flanked by an oak branch and a laurel branch. Above it reads "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". A finely stepped ornamental border in the style of ancient Mexican staircase patterns completes the design.

Small Mintage, Great Tradition
Casa de Moneda de México was founded in 1535 and is regarded as the oldest mint in the Americas. The gold Libertad has been produced there since 1981. It is one of the few gold coins worldwide that deliberately carries no face value. Its value is determined by its gold content, guaranteed by the Banco de México.
The Reverse Proof editions in particular are scarce. For the half-ounce coin, mintages in previous years ranged between 250 and 1,000 pieces. For 2026 as well, specialist dealers are once again announcing a very limited quantity. Anyone building a complete year-set should therefore secure this year's edition in good time.
Half Ounce or Full Ounce? An Honest Comparison
Compared to the 1 oz edition, the entry price is significantly more affordable. Since the design is identical, the smaller coin hardly appears visually inferior. Compared to the Libertad in Brilliant Uncirculated or classics like the Maple Leaf, the Reverse Proof edition does carry a higher premium over the pure metal value. In return, it offers a numismatic appeal that no bullion coin can match. And unlike the Krugerrand with its 22-karat alloy, the Libertad is made of pure fine gold.
Gold is humanity's oldest currency and is considered by many to be the money of God. It has outlasted every paper currency and has never been worth zero.
Why Gold Has Convinced for Thousands of Years
For over 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value. Even in ancient Egypt it was a benchmark in trade, and it later formed the basis of the gold standard. Today, of all entities, central banks are the largest holders of gold in the world. This clearly shows just how much trust they actually place in their own fiat currencies. Paper money can be printed at will; gold cannot. This scarcity protects against loss of purchasing power and makes the yellow metal a proven form of crisis protection in politically and economically turbulent times. Silver may be the little brother, but gold remains the big one.
- Globally recognized, highly liquid, and tradable at any time
- Exempt from VAT as investment gold
- Profits generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year
- Durable and enduring, ideal for passing on wealth to the next generation
The 1/2 oz Gold Libertad 2026 Reverse Proof thus offers what investors and collectors alike appreciate: the intrinsic value of pure gold and the rarity of a limited top-tier minting from Mexico. A coin whose shine will never fade.
