Phoenix 2027 in Reverse Proof: A Myth in 33 Pieces

  • Strictly limited: Only 33 pieces of this edition exist worldwide – a mintage that stands out even among the smallest issues
  • Growth opportunities: Very high potential for value appreciation, driven by the uncompromising limitation and strong demand for mythical-creature designs
  • Rarity: An extremely rare collector's coin that will find its place in only a handful of collections
  • Investment objective: An exclusive collector's item whose tight mintage limit carries high potential for value appreciation
  • Design: The firebird rises from a blazing pyre with its wings raised in a V-shape; on the value side, it looks the viewer directly in the eye in an intense close-up portrait
  • Material / fineness: Purest gold at 999.9/1,000 (24 karat), a full troy ounce of 31.1 g with a generous diameter of 40.00 mm
  • Minting quality: Reverse Proof with a finely frosted coin field and mirror-polished relief
  • Manufacturer: Designed and issued by Kettner Edelmetalle
  • Country of origin: Germany – issued by the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 500 Dollars, year of issue 2027

Thirty-three. There are no more examples of this Phoenix than that. Many gold coins leave the minting press by the tens of thousands year after year. The Phoenix 2027 from the "Mythical Creatures" series deliberately takes the opposite path. It is a true rarity for collectors who wish to see art, myth, and precious metal united in a single ounce.

From Ashes and Embers: The Design of the Firebird

Hardly any mythical creature is as ancient as the phoenix. The Egyptians worshipped a sacred bird called Benu, closely linked to the cult of the sun. The Greeks later named it Phoinix, and even Herodotus wrote of this enigmatic bird. Its legend is quickly told yet eternal: at the end of its life, the phoenix burns – and rises rejuvenated from its own ashes. Rebirth, immortality, new beginnings. To this day, it stands for exactly that.

This moment is captured on the design side. The legendary bird is just taking flight, its gaze directed to the right in half-profile. A striking crest of feathers crowns its head, the hooked beak recalls an eagle, and its claws reach forward. Both wings are spread wide upward in a V-shape: the left wing dominates almost half the coin, while the right extends to the edge. Scale-like covert feathers, long flight feathers, delicate textures – every feather appears individually chiseled. The flowing tail feathers stream downward and seamlessly merge into flickering flames rising from a pyre of logs, rocks, and embers. Smaller fires burn to the right. Arranged in an arc along the right edge are the inscription "PHOENIX" in large serif letters and the indication "1 OZ FINE GOLD 9999".

The value side comes in very close. It shows the phoenix's head with a piercing eye and powerful beak, alongside a long feather whose tips dissolve into flames. Also featured are "500 DOLLARS · 2027", the small national coat of arms, and the inscription "Republic of Liberia". Two sides, two perspectives. One story.

What perishes in fire returns transformed. On 40 millimeters of fine gold, the oldest myth of rebirth becomes tangible.

Reverse Proof: When Matte and Shine Switch Roles

In the classic Proof finish, the coin's field is mirrored while the design remains matte. Reverse Proof reverses this principle. The finely frosted background appears calm and velvety, while the sculptural, almost high-relief design emerges from it with a gleaming shine. This has an especially powerful effect with the Phoenix: turning the coin in the light, the flames and plumage seem to truly flicker. A smooth, raised rim and the reeded edge frame the image cleanly. The coin is delivered in an elegant, dark green case with a velvet lining – presented with dignity and well protected.

Why a Mintage of Only 33 Pieces Carries So Much Weight

Only when compared with other coins does the exceptional nature of this edition become clear:

  1. Classic bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf are minted in very large quantities. They are ideal for pure material value, but numismatically hardly scarce.
  2. The Phoenix gold coin from Niue, an agency issue by the Bulgarian Bulmint in Prooflike quality, is released as a one-ounce coin with 10,000 pieces per year and measures 32.5 mm. A beautiful design, but not an ultra-low mintage.
  3. The Kettner Phoenix in Reverse Proof comes with a mintage of only 33 pieces and a larger 40.00 mm diameter. Mathematically speaking, there is just one example of this edition for roughly every 300 Niue ounces of a given year.

This context also matters: for such a strictly limited coin, price is determined not only by the gold value but above all by design, condition, and collector demand. Those looking purely for fine gold at the lowest premium should choose a bullion coin. Those who value rarity and craftsmanship, however, will find exactly what they are looking for here. The very low mintage and the consistent limitation make this collector's coin a piece that is likely to change hands only rarely after its initial release. This is precisely where its special potential for value appreciation lies.

Gold: The Foundation of This Collector's Item

Rarity is one thing. The material is another. Gold has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years and is considered the oldest currency in the world. In ancient Egypt, it served as a standard in trade; kings and emperors wore it as a sign of their power, and during the era of the gold standard, paper money could be exchanged directly for the precious metal. Some therefore call it the money of God – and the elder sibling of smaller silver. Gold has intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and retains its shine and physical properties across generations. It is no coincidence that central banks are among the largest holders of gold in the world.

  • VAT-free: The coin is purchased without VAT
  • Tax advantage: Profits from the sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • Globally recognized: Gold is internationally tradable and can easily be converted into cash
  • Generational value: Ideal for passing on a collection and wealth to children and grandchildren

Many also value the yellow metal as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection. With the Phoenix 2027, however, something else takes center stage: the knowledge of holding one of only thirty-three examples in your own hands.

Who the Phoenix 2027 Is For

For lovers of mythological designs and the Mythical Creatures series. For numismatists specifically seeking ultra-low mintages in Reverse Proof. And for anyone looking for a gift with meaning – for a new beginning, an anniversary, or a new chapter in life. The firebird stands for rebirth. This one-ounce coin from the 2027 vintage turns that symbolism into a collector's item of lasting significance.
