High above Hechingen, on the cone-shaped Zollerberg in the municipality of Bisingen on the edge of the Swabian Alb, stands one of Germany's most impressive castle complexes. It is already imposing by day. But when darkness falls and the walls begin to glow, Hohenzollern Castle seems to have stepped straight out of a fairy tale. This exact moment is captured by the 1 ounce silver Baden-Württemberg by Night – Hohenzollern Castle 2026. Among the refined silver coins from the "Cities and Landscapes" series, it ranks among the most atmospheric issues of the year. And among the scarcest.

✔ The obverse: A fortress in moonlight

Glowing golden, the castle rises above a dense pine forest. Battlements, bastions and pointed towers stand out sharply against the night sky, with warm light pouring from countless windows. A black-and-gold flag flies atop the highest tower, matching the colors of Baden-Württemberg. Fine mist lies in the valleys all around, with the lights of small villages twinkling in between. On the horizon, a band of orange, red and violet glows above gentle, blue hill ranges. Above it all: the Milky Way, a bright full moon and a sea of stars. Along the lower edge, the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026" runs in gold-colored lettering.

✔ The reverse: A walk through the castle courtyard

The reverse draws the viewer in. Gleaming cobblestones reflect the glow of historic lanterns, leading the eye straight toward the gate. On either side rise the neo-Gothic buildings with their round towers, pointed spires and a tower clock. Here too, the moon and Milky Way stretch across the glowing evening sky – both sides feel like two views of one and the same night. The face value "20 DOLLARS" runs along the right, and a small gold-colored emblem sits at the bottom edge.

✔ Hohenzollern Castle – Ancestral seat of a royal house

The history of this fortress dates back to the 11th century. Contemporaries praised the first castle as the "crown of all castles in Swabia." In 1423, the Swabian League of Cities besieged the complex for ten months and destroyed it. Count Jost Niklas laid the foundation stone for the second castle in 1454, which, however, fell into ruin during the 18th century. In 1819, the young Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia stood among the ruins – and made a decision. As King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, he had the present-day castle complex built in neo-Gothic style starting in 1850, according to plans by the Berlin architect Friedrich August Stüler. He did not live to see its completion. His brother, King Wilhelm I, ceremonially inaugurated the family's ancestral seat on October 3, 1867, together with Queen Augusta.

By the way: the Zollerberg was still bare at the time. Only after completion was the slope reforested with 92,000 beech trees – the very forest that so picturesquely frames the castle on the coin. In the treasury and museum rooms, paintings as well as gold and silversmith works tell the story of Prussia. Today, at an altitude of around 855 meters, the castle attracts visitors from all over the world and is considered a landmark of the Zollernalb region.

The "crown of all castles in Swabia" – captured on an ounce, of which only 100 pieces exist worldwide.

✔ Refinement with color and gold

What makes this ounce so special is its elaborate design. The vivid coloring brings out every detail: the sparkle of the stars, the mist in the valleys, the reflections on the cobblestones. The partially gilded rim encloses the design like an elegant picture frame, while the reeded edge provides a pleasant feel. Every step of the process is carried out in Germany with great precision. The coin is delivered in Mint State (BU) condition, protected in a capsule.

✔ Why the limitation makes the difference

A mintage of just 100 pieces is exceptional even among refined collector's editions. Classic bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic are issued in enormous quantities year after year and closely track the metal value – ideal for anyone who primarily wants to collect ounces. Anyone who, on the other hand, wants to see art, color and rarity combined in one coin will find the perfect counterpart here. Due to the strict limitation, only a very small circle of collectors can enjoy this piece. Especially for such a popular landmark, a very low mintage often sparks lasting interest – truly a rarity.

Another plus for series enthusiasts: the nighttime designs are also available for other landmarks, such as the "Bavaria by Night" editions featuring Neuschwanstein Castle or Munich's Frauenkirche, which are likewise limited to 100 pieces each. Together, they form an atmospheric nighttime journey through southern Germany.

✔ Silver as a noble carrier metal

Silver has accompanied humanity for thousands of years as a coinage metal and symbol of prosperity. For a collector's ounce like this one, it is the ideal material:

  • For private individuals in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • The metal is durable, retains its properties across generations, and is excellently suited for passing on as an inheritance
  • Demand from electronics, solar and medical technology underscores its intrinsic value
  • As a globally traded commodity with limited supply, silver is highly liquid

This coin also brings along, almost as a bonus, the classic inflation hedge and crisis protection for which precious metals have always been valued. However, the main focus remains its design and rarity.
