Big Five · South Africa 2026

The leopard’s coat suits its life in trees, in the forest and at night. Among the Big Five, the leopard is known as the elusive one.

The leopard

From the desert to the rainforest

  • Desert
  • Mountain forest
  • Rainforest

No other big cat is as widespread: leopards live in some 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia, in deserts, savannas, mountains and rainforests.

They prefer rocky ground with dense bush and riverine forest. The leopard climbs well, spends much of its time in trees and is mostly active at night, as a loner.

Its coat carries dark, irregular spots, the rosettes; the base colour ranges from pale yellow in warm, dry regions to reddish orange in dense forests. Instead of purring, it calls with a rough, rasping sound.

The cheetah

The only one of its genus

Its genus, Acinonyx, has no other living member today. The cheetah needs wide, open land and is mostly active by day, unlike many other cats.

Its coat carries solid, round or oval black spots from 1.9 to 3.8 centimetres; only the throat and belly stay white. The tail ends in four to six black rings.

Cheetahs do not roar; their most common call is a chirp. Females live alone, while males often join up in groups.

Why two patterns

The coat often suits where the cat lives

  • Rosettes in a leopard’s coat, detail of a coin

    Rosette

    For trees, forest and night.

  • Solid spots in a cheetah’s coat, detail of a coin

    Spot

    Black, without a ring.

A study of 35 cat species shows that whether a coat is patterned is linked to the habitat. How intricate and irregular the pattern is also relates to life in trees and to activity at night.

Over the course of evolution, such camouflage adapts comparatively quickly to a way of life. In the grey grass where cheetahs often live, their spots can take up the shadows of the blades and let the animals merge with their surroundings.

Rare coats

A black panther can be a leopard

Leopards with melanism, that is with almost black fur, are often called black panthers. Black cheetahs, by contrast, are not known.

In the rare king cheetah, the spots merge into blotches and stripes. It is not a species of its own but carries a rare variant of the gene Taqpep, which shapes the variations of the tabby pattern in domestic cats.

Young cheetahs wear a coat of their own as well: a thick, silvery grey mantle along the back, which they shed at about three months of age.

Big Five · South Africa

Two coins, one face

The motif side shows the leopard with the coat of arms below it, together with SOUTH AFRICA, BIG FIVE and the year. The other side divides the face: only two coins side by side make a whole portrait.

Place many coins next to each other and a whole row of faces appears. Today, Big Five means the five animals that wildlife lovers and safari guests want to see in the wild.

What a sight. Two coins, one predator, one story – and only 1,000 sets worldwide. The Silver Big Five series from South Africa is among the most coveted collecting series in numismatics, and with the third-generation Leopard design it reaches a new pinnacle. This double capsule set unites two individual 1-ounce silver coins in an elegant presentation capsule – nestled in a fine wooden case bearing the golden emblem of the Rand Refinery on the inside.

The Leopard: Africa's most elegant hunter in pure silver

The obverse depicts the leopard in all its splendour. Seated upright on a rocky ledge, its gaze watchfully fixed on the distance, the big cat embodies strength, grace and untamed wilderness. Every single rosette in its coat has been rendered with incredible precision. Below it, the South African coat of arms, flanked by the inscriptions "SOUTH AFRICA" and "BIG FIVE 2026". You can almost feel the tension of the animal – as if it could leap from its rock at any moment.

The reverse? Even more dramatic. Here the leopard looks the viewer directly in the eye. Two mirror-image halves of its face merge into a hypnotic portrait, framed by finely engraved grass and fur. In the centre, the weight and fineness specification takes pride of place: "FIVE RAND – 1oz – Ag 999". This close-up is so richly detailed that you could count every individual whisker.

Proof – Perfection down to the smallest detail

Both coins were produced in the Proof minting quality. This means: mirror-polished fields, frosted reliefs and a contrast that brings every detail to life. This highest grade of coin minting requires multiply polished dies and particularly careful handling. The result is simply breathtaking – and makes each individual coin a small work of art in silver.

Only those who act quickly will secure one of the strictly limited 1,000 sets available worldwide. Previous issues in the Big Five series have regularly sold out within a very short time.

Why this set is an absolute rarity

Let the numbers sink in: A mintage of only 1,000 pieces. Worldwide. Not per country, not per continent – in total. For comparison: common bullion coins such as the Krugerrand or the Maple Leaf are struck in mintages of millions. This collector's coin, on the other hand, plays in a completely different league. The very low mintage combined with the enormous popularity of the Big Five series creates an appreciation potential that is second to none.

Earlier issues in the series – from the elephant to the lion to the rhinoceros – have impressively demonstrated how quickly such limited editions trade significantly above their issue price on the secondary market. The leopard, as one of the most elusive and rarely observed animals among the Big Five, is likely to attract particularly strong interest from collectors.

Fine case and double capsule – presentation at the highest level

The set is delivered in a high-quality, dark brown wooden case that sets collectors' hearts racing the moment it is opened. The two coins rest securely in a specially crafted double capsule that protects them from handling and environmental influences. On the inside of the lid, the discreetly embossed logo of the Rand Refinery can be found – a hallmark of quality that enjoys worldwide recognition.

Silver as a timeless store of value

Silver looks back on a millennia-old history as a medium of exchange and store of value. Particularly in times of economic uncertainty and rising inflation, the white precious metal proves its strength as a crisis hedge. Added to this is the steadily growing industrial demand – from solar technology to electronics to medical technology. The limited availability of the raw material ensures long-term stability. And not to be forgotten: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
