Krugerrand · 2026 Issue
The leap that began in 1967.

You are looking at the side with the springbok.
Gold for the hands of ordinary people.
In the late 1960s, around three quarters of the western world’s gold came from South Africa. The Chamber of Mines wanted ordinary people, too, to be able to own gold.
With the Krugerrand, a new kind of coin came into being for this purpose: exactly one ounce of fine gold, with no face value struck on it. Its value was meant to come directly from the gold it contains.
6,012,293
Krugerrand bullion coins were issued in 1978 alone, 187 tonnes of gold in all.
A leap through history
1886
Gold on the Witwatersrand
On the Witwatersrand, the ridge of white water, rich gold deposits are discovered. South Africa’s currency is also named after it: the rand.
1947
The springbok
The sculptor Coert Steynberg draws his springbok in 1946 and 1947. It first appears in 1947 on the 5-shilling coin marking the visit of the British royal family.
1967
The first Krugerrand
On 3 July, commissioned by the South African Reserve Bank and the Chamber of Mines, the South African Mint strikes the first Krugerrand.
1980
Smaller sizes
The half ounce, the quarter ounce and the tenth ounce are added so that smaller sums can also be invested in gold.
2017
Fifty years
For the anniversary, the first silver Krugerrand appears, along with the 1/20 and 1/50 ounce in gold. For these coins, the designers go back to the original wax models and designs.
The motif
The springbok and the president

- The springbok
- South Africa’s national animal in mid-leap. The springbok owes its name to its characteristic leaps. It was designed by the sculptor Coert Steynberg.
- The aloe
- The motif includes an Aloe claviflora, one of South Africa’s best-known aloes. It grows in the dry interior of the country, where the springbok is also at home.
- Fynsilwer
- Below the springbok is the weight in fine silver, framed by FYNSILWER in Afrikaans and FINE SILVER in English. Fynsilwer means fine silver.
- Paul Kruger
- The other side shows Paul Kruger in profile. In 1883 he became president of the South African Republic, also known as the Transvaal. The portrait was created by the die engraver Otto Schultz. According to the South African Mint, it goes back to the Kruger half-crown of 1892.
- The name
- Krugerrand combines the name Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency.
The silver
Fine silver with a face value
The silver Krugerrand is struck in fine silver, with a fineness of 999 parts per thousand. Unlike the gold coin, it bears a face value in rand: R1 on the one-ounce coin, R2 and R5 on the larger coins.
Proof
Placed by hand
The proof finish has accompanied the Krugerrand since the very first year of issue: in 1967, 10,000 gold Krugerrands were made in this quality.
For the 2017 anniversary, the South African Mint described its process as follows: the coins are placed by hand and struck several times at lower pressure, so that every detail is transferred flawlessly.
Each coin is then packed by hand and protected in a capsule, so that it stays just as it left the press.
The same leap since 1967.
Only the year is new.
By its 50th anniversary in 2017, more than 60 million Krugerrands had been sold. The 2026 issue carries this story forward, in your hand and perhaps one day in the hand of someone you pass it on to.

A masterpiece of South African minting artistry
With this edition, the South African Mint has once again proven why it ranks among the most renowned mints in the world. The mirror-polished surfaces contrast perfectly with the matte-finished reliefs – a hallmark of Proof quality. Every detail has been crafted with the utmost precision.
The obverse is dominated by the striking portrait of Paul Kruger, the legendary President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1902. His characteristic profile with the imposing beard is framed by the inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA". The reverse depicts the elegant springbok – South Africa's proud national animal – in full motion against a typically African landscape. Above it is the inscription "KRUGERRAND", flanked by the year 2026.

- Fine weight of exactly 31.10 grams (1 ounce)
- Fineness of 999/1,000 – nearly pure silver
- Diameter of 38.74 mm for an impressive appearance
- Face value of 1 Rand as official legal tender of South Africa
"The Krugerrand is more than a coin – it is a piece of history that has delighted generations of collectors and investors since 1967."
Why this collector's coin is so special
The strict limitation to just 10,000 pieces makes this edition something very special. While the bullion version of the Krugerrand is minted in the millions, this Proof version is a genuine collector's item with considerable value appreciation potential. Experience shows that limited mintages are highly popular among collectors and are often sold out quickly.
Silver itself offers numerous advantages as an investment. It has served as a store of value for thousands of years and has withstood every currency crisis. Industrial demand – particularly in electronics, solar technology, and medicine – is continuously rising. At the same time, supply is limited, which supports long-term value stability. And let's not forget: profits from the sale are tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year.
Exclusive presentation in a high-quality case
This precious coin is delivered in an elegant black case that protects it perfectly while presenting it in style. The velvety inner lining securely cradles the coin, while the lid is adorned with the South African Mint logo. This makes every opening of the case a special moment.
Whether as the cornerstone of a collection, an addition to an existing Krugerrand holding, or as a value-retaining gift – this limited collector's coin combines history, craftsmanship, and the timeless value of silver in a unique piece. Secure your copy of this coveted edition now, before the small mintage sells out!
