Silver Krugerrand Proof Chronicle 2018–2026: Seven Years, One Leap

Since 3 July 1967, it has been leaping across the South African savanna: the Springbok of the Krugerrand. It was not until 2017, on its 50th anniversary, that the legendary coin appeared in silver for the first time. This Proof Chronicle brings together seven years of the Silver Krugerrand in the highest minting quality, the Proof finish. Each coin contains one troy ounce of fine silver and comes from the South African Mint.

Seven coins and seven years, paired with a design that has never changed and that collectors around the world recognise instantly.

What's Included in the Chronicle

The set contains exactly these seven silver coins. Each has its own limited mintage:

  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2018 Proof: mintage of 15,000 pieces, including case
  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2019 Proof: mintage of 20,000 pieces, including case
  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2021 Proof: mintage of 20,000 pieces, including case
  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2022 Proof: mintage of 20,000 pieces, including case
  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2023 Proof: mintage of only 5,000 pieces, Proof
  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2024 Proof: mintage of only 5,000 pieces, Proof
  • 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2026 Proof: mintage of 10,000 pieces, Proof

Together, the coins contain 217.7 g of fine silver, with a gross weight of 217.92 g. The 2020 and 2025 years are not included. The 2023 and 2024 editions are especially noteworthy. With 5,000 pieces each, they rank among the smallest mintages ever issued for the one-ounce Proof Silver Krugerrand.

Springbok and President: The Design Since 1967

On one side, the Springbok, South Africa's national animal, leaps across the coin, designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg. Above it, bold letters spell out KRUGERRAND, with the year split to its left and right. Below reads FYNSILWER 1OZ FINE SILVER R1, Afrikaans and English side by side, along with the face value of one Rand.

The other side shows Paul Kruger in profile. He served as President of the South African Republic from 1883, and the portrait was created by die engraver Otto Schultz. The inscription SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA names the issuing country in both languages, and a finely serrated edge with 200 teeth frames the coin. The name links Kruger to the Rand, South Africa's currency.

Proof Quality: Mirror Finish Down to the Smallest Detail

For the Proof finish, the South African Mint hand-feeds the blanks and strikes them multiple times with lower pressure. This creates mirror-like fields against which the frosted relief of the Springbok stands out almost three-dimensionally. You can see every strand of Kruger's beard and every aloe plant in the foreground. This level of detail is found only in the Proof finish.

It is best to handle the coins only by the edge, ideally wearing cotton gloves. This keeps the surfaces flawless for decades.

Proof or Bullion Coin? An Honest Comparison

Since 2018, the Silver Krugerrand has also been available as a classic bullion coin in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality. It is not limited, is minted in large quantities, and carries only a small premium over the silver value. Anyone primarily looking for as much fine silver as possible is well served there.

With the Proof version, the premium over the pure metal value is higher. In return, you get limited mintages, elaborate minting, and a series that can be documented year after year. Even alongside other Proof silver coins such as the Maple Leaf or Britannia, the Krugerrand holds its own. Hardly any other design has stood for as long for the idea of putting precious metal into the hands of ordinary people.

The Proof Chronicle combines both: over 217 grams of fine silver you can hold in your hand, and a collection that tells a story.

Good Reasons to Buy the Chronicle as a Set

  1. Save time: You receive seven years at once and don't have to search for individual, often hard-to-find editions.
  2. Consistent quality: All coins are struck in Proof quality and come from the same mint.
  3. Genuine depth: The set spans from the 2018 issue to the current 2026 edition, showing the development of the Proof series.
  4. Tangible value: You own over 217 g of fine silver in your own hands.

Who the Chronicle Is Made For

With this set, collectors can close major gaps in their Krugerrand collection in one go. Investors with an eye for aesthetics receive physical silver that has proven itself for centuries as a store of value, an inflation hedge, and a safeguard in uncertain times. The Chronicle also makes an excellent gift for a birth or anniversary, or for someone to whom you want to pass on something lasting.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency, and silver is its faithful companion. Both have outlasted empires, paper money, and crises. With the Silver Krugerrand Proof Chronicle, you hold a piece of this permanence in your hand, told across seven shining chapters.
