Silver Krugerrand Special Set: Three Springboks, One Story
Before there was the Krugerrand, there was the Springbok. This is exactly the story told by the Silver Krugerrand Special Set — not in words, but in silver. In an elegant presentation case lie three coins side by side, connecting more than seven decades of South African coin history: a historic 5-shilling silver coin from 1958 and two silver Krugerrand coins from the 2026 year of issue. One of them is struck in Proof quality, the other in classic bullion quality.
The set is aimed at collectors who value provenance, and at investors whose silver should also tell a story.
What's Included in the Set

- 1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2026: the classic silver coin in bullion quality
- Krugerrand Set Case: a high-quality presentation case with black insert, in which all three coins are beautifully displayed side by side
The Origin of the Legend: 5 Shilling Springbok 1958
The leaping springbok is now one of the most famous coin designs in the world. It was created by South African sculptor Coert Laurens Steynberg, whose initials "CLS" can still be found to the right beneath the animal today. The design first appeared in 1947 on the 5-shilling silver coin. Twenty years later, in 1967, the Krugerrand gold coin adopted this exact springbok and made it world-famous.
The 5-shilling coin in the set is from the 1958 year of issue. It belongs to the type minted from 1953 to 1959. Its obverse shows the first portrait of Elizabeth II, designed by Mary Gillick: the young queen wearing a laurel wreath, framed by the legend ELIZABETH II REGINA. The reverse bears the bilingual inscription SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA and the face value 5 S. According to catalogue records, only around 233,000 pieces were minted in 1958. With the founding of the Republic and the introduction of the Rand, the coin lost its legal tender status in 1961. It is therefore a genuine historical document from the era before the Rand.
Technically, it is a product of its time. It was struck in .500 silver (50% silver, 50% copper) and weighs approximately 28.28 g. With a diameter of about 38.6 mm, it is almost exactly the same size as the two modern Krugerrand ounces. This makes the trio appear especially cohesive in the case.
Silver Krugerrand 2026: Tradition in Fine Silver
The Krugerrand bears the name of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic, along with that of the national currency, the Rand. Its design has remained unchanged since 1967, with only the year of issue changing. For its 50th anniversary, a silver edition was issued for the first time in 2017. Since 2018, the silver Krugerrand has also been available as a bullion coin for investors.
The two Krugerrand coins in the set have the following key specifications:
- Fineness: 999/1000 fine silver
- Fine weight: 1 troy ounce each (31.107 g)
- Diameter: 38.725 mm
- Face value: 1 Rand (R1), legal tender in South Africa
- Mint: South African Mint
An interesting difference compared to its larger counterpart: the gold Krugerrand is made of 22-karat gold (916.7/1000) and contains copper, which gives it its reddish tone. The silver version, by contrast, is nearly pure at 999/1000.
1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2026 Proof
Proof quality is considered the pinnacle of minting craftsmanship. The field of the coin is mirror-polished, the reliefs are frosted, and the details are razor-sharp. The springbok almost seems to leap across the coin. Worldwide, there are only 10,000 pieces of this Krugerrand Proof edition, making it a highly sought-after collector's coin.
1 oz Silver Krugerrand 2026
Its counterpart in bullion quality features the same design and the same fineness, but with the classic, silky shine of the bullion version. Placing both coins side by side immediately reveals how strongly the minting quality affects the appearance of a design.

For Collectors, Investors and Friends of South Africa
Many Krugerrand sets combine different denominations in gold. This set takes a different approach. It focuses on silver and showcases a development spanning several decades, rather than simply lining up different weight classes. Those who wish to stack pure bullion are best served by purchasing individual silver Krugerrand coins. Those seeking a piece of coin history with lasting material value, however, will find a rare combination here.
For millennia, silver has served humanity as a means of payment and as a store of value in uncertain times. In this set, you hold two chapters of this story in your hands: the historic circulation coin and the modern silver coin.
The Silver Krugerrand Special Set is well suited as the cornerstone of a South Africa collection, as a gift for a special occasion, or as an addition to your precious metals holdings. It combines value preservation, aesthetics and history in a single case.
