The side with the leaves
An autumn in the engraver’s garden
When Stan Witten moved to Ottawa, he fell in love with the maples. The Royal Canadian Mint quotes him: “I even planted a few in our backyard, and those trees provided the inspiration for this design.”
“In the fall of 2023, as the leaves were coming down, I gathered some and placed them on the ground to form the arrangement seen here,” says Witten. According to the Mint, they are sugar maple leaves, arguably the most famous maple tree in Canada.
Arranged, photographed, sketched, sculpted
Gently overlapping, the leaves are tilted towards the right, as though they are falling or have just landed on the ground. That is how the Mint describes them. “Depending on the art style,” says Witten, who was an engraver for 35 years, “a subtle 3D form is more interesting than a series of carved lines”, and a lot of negative space keeps the focus on the leaves.

On the five-ounce coin of 2026, the leaves themselves are plated with black rhodium, while the field stays mirror-bright and the rim is dark too. The rhodium is part of the Mint’s issue.

Triple Maple: three maple leaves by Stan Witten
The design side features a harmonious arrangement of three maple leaves, framed by the inscriptions "CANADA" and "FINE SILVER 5OZ ARGENT PUR", the fineness designation "9999", and the engraver's initials "SW". The Triple Maple design is based on one of Stan Witten's own photographs and reflects his long-standing passion and fascination for Canadian nature. The opposite side bears the portrait of King Charles III, surrounded by the inscriptions "CHARLES III" and "D · G · REX", along with the face value of 50 dollars and the year of issue 2026. This places the coin in the year in which Canada celebrates the 30th anniversary of the maple tree as a national symbol.
Rhodium and Proof – technology meets elegance
The rhodium-plated edge creates a dark, refined contrast to the mirror-finish silver surface. Rhodium belongs to the platinum group, is exceptionally hard and corrosion-resistant, and makes every specimen of this quality a small work of art. Combined with the PP mint quality, a fascinating interplay of light, brilliance, and depth is created. The Proof finish is considered the most elaborate manufacturing process in coin minting and is correspondingly sought after by connoisseurs.
Silver Maple Leaf – a classic with tradition
The Silver Maple Leaf has been one of the world's most sought-after bullion coins since 1988 and stands for the high purity and quality of workmanship of the Royal Canadian Mint. Within this series, silver coins such as the Triple Maple issues occupy a special position, as they interpret the iconic maple leaf design in a particularly elaborate collector's quality. Compared to the classic 1 oz bullion coins, the 5 oz variant scores with its impressive format, strictly limited mintage, and refined rhodium finishing – characteristics that clearly underline its potential as a collector's piece.
Silver as a store of value for investors and collectors
Silver has been known as a monetary and coinage metal for thousands of years and continues to serve as a proven inflation hedge and reliable crisis protection. Unlike fiat money, which relies solely on trust in governments, physical silver possesses an intrinsic, tangible value.
Gold and silver are among humanity's oldest stores of value – they have outlasted currencies and crises over centuries without ever losing their appeal.
Numerous arguments support silver's suitability as a long-term wealth-building asset:
- High and growing industrial demand from electronics, solar, and medical technology.
- Limited availability combined with increasing demand – a foundation for long-term value stability.
- High liquidity and worldwide tradability at any time.
- Well suited for diversifying wealth and passing on value across generations.
- Usable as a medium of exchange, especially for smaller transactions in times of currency uncertainty.
A tax advantage is an added benefit: profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. The 5 oz Triple Maple silver coin in Proof is delivered in the original case from the Royal Canadian Mint including a certificate of authenticity – a premium presentation that does justice to this extraordinary rarity.
