The side with the leaves

An autumn in the engraver’s garden

When Stan Witten moved to Ottawa, he fell in love with the maples. The Royal Canadian Mint quotes him: “I even planted a few in our backyard, and those trees provided the inspiration for this design.”

“In the fall of 2023, as the leaves were coming down, I gathered some and placed them on the ground to form the arrangement seen here,” says Witten. According to the Mint, they are sugar maple leaves, arguably the most famous maple tree in Canada.

Arranged, photographed, sketched, sculpted

Gently overlapping, the leaves are tilted towards the right, as though they are falling or have just landed on the ground. That is how the Mint describes them. “Depending on the art style,” says Witten, who was an engraver for 35 years, “a subtle 3D form is more interesting than a series of carved lines”, and a lot of negative space keeps the focus on the leaves.

  • Each leaf with its own stem

  • Veins and serrated edges

  • SW, the initials of Stan Witten

King Charles III, effigy by Steven Rosati, and the face value

The Triple Maple is a design of the Royal Canadian Mint, first issued in 2025 and for the second time in 2026.

The side with the effigy shows King Charles III in a portrait by Steven Rosati, and below it is the face value, 50 DOLLARS.

The finish

A mirror, polished by hand

In the Royal Canadian Mint’s Proof finish, the field is polished by hand to a high gloss, like a mirror. The relief of the leaves has other finishes that bring out the design.
