An autumn in the engraver’s garden
When Stan Witten moved to Ottawa, he fell in love with the maples. The Royal Canadian Mint quotes him: “I even planted a few in our backyard, and those trees provided the inspiration for this design.”
“In the fall of 2023, as the leaves were coming down, I gathered some and placed them on the ground to form the arrangement seen here,” says Witten. According to the Mint, they are sugar maple leaves, arguably the most famous maple tree in Canada.
Arranged, photographed, sketched, sculpted
Gently overlapping, the leaves are tilted towards the right, as though they are falling or have just landed on the ground. That is how the Mint describes them. “Depending on the art style,” says Witten, who was an engraver for 35 years, “a subtle 3D form is more interesting than a series of carved lines”, and a lot of negative space keeps the focus on the leaves.

The Triple Maple is a design of the Royal Canadian Mint, first issued in 2025 and for the second time in 2026.
The side with the effigy shows King Charles III in a portrait by Steven Rosati, and below it is the face value, 20 DOLLARS.
The finish
Matte Proof with black rhodium
According to the Royal Canadian Mint, Matte Proof is a finish unique to it: like Proof, but with a satin field instead of a high-gloss one. In 2026 black rhodium was added, as part of the Mint’s issue. It fills the field on both sides, and the leaves stand out in relief in front of it.

Some coins are simple. This one deliberately is not. The 1 oz Silver Elegant Triple Maple Leaf 2026 combines the celebrated Triple Maple design with a black rhodium finish and a matte proof surface. Struck from 999.9 pure silver, this Canadian issue presents itself as an extraordinary collector's item – and a mintage of just 7,000 pieces makes it a true rarity.
Black Rhodium Meets Matte Proof Finish
The special feature is the contrast. The black rhodium coating fills the field on both sides, draping itself like a dark curtain around the design. Against this backdrop, the three silvery, gleaming maple leaves stand out all the more brilliantly. The matte proof background directs the light – and the eye – specifically toward the finely chiselled leaves. The result is a dramatic interplay of light and dark, brilliant and matte, that is barely noticeable in a photo and only truly appreciated when held in hand. As a pleasant side effect, the rhodium layer also protects the surface from tarnishing.
A Design by Stan Witten
The Triple Maple design comes from the Royal Canadian Mint's longtime senior engraver, Stan Witten. Three gently overlapping maple leaves, tilted slightly to the right, create an impression of movement – as if they had just drifted to the ground. The design originated in Witten's own garden: he collected fallen leaves, arranged them, photographed the composition, and then translated it into a sculptural engraving. The design thus reflects his fascination with nature, and with the maple leaf in particular.
The reverse features the inscriptions "CANADA", "FINE SILVER 1OZ ARGENT PUR", the fineness "9999", as well as the engraver's initials "SW". The obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III, the face value of 20 dollars, and the year of issue 2026.
Technical Data & Position within the Maple Family
The classic Silver Maple Leaf has been one of the world's most popular bullion coins since 1988 – simple, pure, and globally tradable. The Elegant Triple Maple edition takes things a step further: it retains the same 999.9 fineness and the same one troy ounce of fine weight, but elevates the piece to the status of a collector's coin through rhodium plating, Matte Proof finish, and low mintage. Those seeking pure bullion at spot price will opt for the standard version; those who value design and rarity will find here a refined showpiece with clear technical specifications. A similar approach is familiar from refined gold coins from the same mint.
Silver as a Foundation for Collectors and Investors
Silver has been prized as a store of value and coinage metal for thousands of years. It combines intrinsic value – underpinned by industrial demand from electronics, solar, and medical technology, among others – with a limited supply. This gives rise to its role as an inflation hedge and reliable crisis protection. Unlike pure paper money, silver possesses an intrinsic value that does not depend on trust in a government.
Profits from the private sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
This makes the limited edition suitable both for long-term retirement provision and wealth transfer across generations, as well as an aesthetic highlight for any collection. High liquidity, worldwide recognition, and the hallmark craftsmanship of the Royal Canadian Mint round out the picture. Your coin will be delivered securely packaged in a high-quality case – ready for display or the safe deposit box.
