The Royal Mint

160 Britannias in silver.

Coin tubes and stacks of silver coins, a single Britannia in front of them

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

160 coins

A tube from The Royal Mint holds 16 of these coins, and each row stands for one tube.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 16.5 mm
  • face value 20 pence

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

King Charles III on the Value Side – A Historic Collector's Piece

The reverse of these exceptional silver coins features the official portrait of King Charles III. This makes these coins among the first issues under the new monarch – a detail that fascinates collectors worldwide. The inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 20 PENCE" lends each individual coin its official legitimacy as legal tender.

On the obverse, the iconic Britannia reigns in all her splendour. Her flowing robes, the characteristic trident and the Union Jack-adorned shield are masterfully struck into the precious metal. The fine lines in the background create a fascinating radiant halo that truly brings the figure to life.

Why This Bundle Is a Smart Choice

The 1/10 ounce denomination offers decisive advantages over larger units. In times of economic uncertainty or currency instability, silver in this convenient size can be used particularly flexibly as a medium of exchange. Smaller transactions? No problem. Partial sales? Possible at any time.

Silver has outlasted every paper currency in history. It possesses an intrinsic value that exists independently of political decisions or central bank policy.

Silver as a Strategic Wealth Hedge

Industrial demand for silver is continuously rising. Electronics, solar technology, medical technology – the versatile precious metal is needed everywhere. This fundamental demand supports the value over the long term. At the same time, supply is limited. A combination that gives pause for thought.

Particularly attractive: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This makes physical silver an interesting option for long-term retirement planning. Wealth that can be passed from generation to generation.

The Britannia Series – Tradition for Centuries

The Britannia is one of the best-known and most popular bullion coins worldwide. The Royal Mint has been striking this series with consistently high quality for years. The combination of British craftsmanship, the highest silver purity and the timeless design makes each individual coin a small work of art.

With this bundle of 160 coins, you are securing not only a substantial silver holding, but also a piece of numismatic history. The practical packaging in coin tubes ensures optimal protection and easy storage. Act now – before others do.
