The Royal Mint

320 Britannias in silver.

Black master box with coin tubes, stacks of silver coins and a single Britannia in front of it

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

320 coins

A tube from The Royal Mint holds 16 of these coins, and each row stands for one tube.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 16.5 mm
  • face value 20 pence

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

King Charles III on the Value Side – A Piece of British History

The reverse of each individual coin features the portrait of King Charles III. This means you are holding not just an investment product, but a piece of living contemporary history. The inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 20 PENCE" lends the coin its official character as legal tender of Great Britain.

On the obverse, Britannia reigns majestically – that mythical figure who has stood for centuries as a symbol of strength, independence and the indomitable spirit of the British Isles. With flowing robes, the characteristic trident in hand and the Union Jack on her shield, she embodies timeless values. The fine guilloche pattern in the background adds additional depth to the design and makes each coin a small work of art.

The Masterbox – Professional Storage Included

The Royal Mint's black masterbox provides optimal protection for your investment. Inside, the coins are securely packed in individual tubes – perfectly stacked and protected from external influences. This professional packaging solution is ideally suited for:

Why the 1/10 Ounce Denomination?

Smaller denominations such as the 1/10 ounce offer decisive advantages. They allow for flexible partial liquidation without having to dissolve larger positions all at once. In times of crisis or currency instability, small units are far easier to use as a means of exchange. And last but not least: entry into the world of silver coins becomes affordable even for beginners.

"Silver is the poor man's gold – and the Britannia its queen."

Don't Forget the Tax Advantages

An important consideration for every investor: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided you hold the coins for at least one year. This regulation makes physical silver a particularly attractive investment for long-term oriented investors.

Industrial demand for silver is continuously rising – whether in electronics, the solar industry or medical technology. This fundamental demand provides sustainable support for the value of the white precious metal. At the same time, supply is limited, which speaks in favour of long-term value stability.
