Name and year
The series
One animal a year since 1996
In 1996 The Perth Mint became the first mint to release an Australian lunar programme, as it states. Each series follows the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Lunar I from 1996 to 2007, Lunar II from 2008 to 2019, Lunar III from 2020 to 2031.
Each year one animal is added, and the snake, the horse and the goat each have separate designs for gold and silver. The snake is the sixth animal of Lunar III, the horse the seventh, the goat the eighth.
Since the snake of 2025, the effigy side has shown King Charles III, portrayed by Dan Thorne.

The mint
The P of Perth
The Perth Mint was founded in a gold rush. In 1892 a find near Coolgardie set off Australia’s second great gold rush of the 19th century. Premier Sir John Forrest did not want the gold to leave Western Australia for processing and secured a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth.
On 20 June 1899 the first gold was processed and struck there, and The Perth Mint has operated continuously on the same site in East Perth ever since. The sovereigns from Perth carried a small P above the date.
The designs of the snake, the horse and the goat also bear a P, as The Perth Mint’s mintmark. Today it is owned by the State of Western Australia.

The Year of the Horse – Symbol of Strength and Freedom
The seventh issue of the twelve-year Lunar Series III is dedicated to the majestic horse. According to an ancient Chinese legend, the Emperor ordered a great race between all the animals to determine the twelve places of the lunar calendar. The powerful horse nearly finished sixth, but was startled by the cunning snake and ended up in seventh place.
People born in the Year of the Horse are considered energetic, freedom-loving, and full of joie de vivre. These qualities are perfectly reflected in the highly detailed coin design: a magnificent horse with raised hooves embodies both strength and grace. In the background, majestic mountain landscapes and sweeping grasslands extend into the distance – a symbol of boundless freedom.
"Gold is the world's oldest currency and has outlasted all paper currencies. This strictly limited coin combines the permanence of gold with the scarcity of a true rarity."
The Highest Minting Art in Proof Quality
The coin is produced in the highest mint quality, "Proof" (PP). In this elaborate process, specially polished blanks are struck multiple times with polished dies. The result: a mirror-smooth surface with frosted raised details that delights every collector. Every detail of the artistic design is thus showcased to perfection.
Why This Coin Represents an Extraordinary Investment
Gold possesses intrinsic value and has served as a stable store of value for over 6,000 years. While paper money can be devalued by inflation, gold retains its purchasing power. Incidentally, the world's largest holders of gold are the central banks themselves – a clear sign that they no longer fully trust their own fiat money.
- The extremely low mintage of only 1,000 pieces makes this coin a true rarity
- Gold is exempt from VAT and profits are tax-free after a one-year holding period
- Perfect crisis protection – gold has never been worth zero
- The Perth Mint enjoys the highest reputation worldwide for its minting artistry
- Lunar coins are extremely popular among collectors
Technical Perfection Meets Cultural Significance
With a diameter of 32.60 mm and a fine weight of exactly one ounce (31.10 g), this coin meets international standards for bullion coins. The face value of 100 Australian dollars underscores its status as legal tender, while the actual gold value is of course many times higher.
The Chinese character for "horse" along with the inscription "HORSE 2026" connect Eastern tradition with Western minting artistry. On the reverse, the portrait of King Charles III adorns the coin – a work by the renowned artist Dan Thorne.
Your Chance to Own a True Numismatic Rarity
This collector's coin is delivered in an elegant case and is perfectly suited as the centrepiece of any collection. The enormous appreciation potential arises from the perfect combination of several factors: the very low mintage, the popular Lunar theme, the highest mint quality, and of course the intrinsic value of the gold itself.
Bear in mind: with a limited edition of only 1,000 pieces worldwide and the large international collector community for Lunar coins, this issue will sell out quickly. Gold has shone for millennia and will never lose its lustre – this exclusive coin combines that timeless value stability with the scarcity of a true rarity.
"Gold is the money of kings – it has been used as a store of value and medium of exchange since antiquity. Even the ancient Egyptians recognised the value and appeal of gold."
Secure your piece of this extraordinary coin now and benefit from the combination of numismatic collector value and the security of a physical gold investment. An investment that brings joy while simultaneously protecting your wealth!
