Münze Österreich

Two ounces of gold, coin upon coin.

Since October 1989, Münze Österreich has issued the Wiener Philharmoniker in gold.

Coin tube with gold Wiener Philharmoniker coins, a stack of coins and a single coin beside it

The organ in the Golden Hall

The organ, enlarged from a product photo.

One side of the coin shows the organ in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, often called the Golden Hall (Goldener Saal).

Its case forms a single whole with the hall, and the silent pipes of its façade still come from the first organ. Behind it today stands the hall’s fourth organ, the work of the Vorarlberg firm Rieger, in place since 2011. The first was presented in 1872, and Anton Bruckner improvised on it.

The inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH and the face value make the Philharmoniker legal tender in Austria.

In the Golden Hall, the Wiener Philharmoniker play their New Year’s Concert.

Today it is broadcast to more than 150 countries. According to the orchestra, around 50 million people watch.

20 coins

Each with a tenth of an ounce of gold, plus the coin tube.

Each bears its own face value and the milled edge that Münze Österreich cites as a mark of authenticity.

The instruments

The other side shows instruments of the orchestra the coin is named after. Above them are the words WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.

The design is the work of Thomas Pesendorfer, later chief engraver at Münze Österreich. It has remained the same since it was first struck, in gold, silver and platinum.

  1. The Vienna horn

Top left, with its coils and its wide, sweeping bell.

  2. The bassoon

Slender and standing tall, between the horn and the neck of the cello.

  3. The harp

Top right. Its strings reach down to the string instruments.

  4. The string instruments

In the centre, the cello, with two more string instruments on either side.

All details enlarged from a product photo.

From the Vienna Mint to the Philharmoniker

  1. 1194

    A ransom

According to tradition, the history of the Vienna Mint begins in this year, with the ransom for King Richard the Lionheart of England.

  2. 1835

    At the Heumarkt

The Hauptmünzamt am Heumarkt is built to plans by Paul Sprenger and completed in 1838. The Philharmoniker is still struck here today.

  3. 1989

    The first Philharmoniker

The Hauptmünzamt becomes Münze Österreich AG, a subsidiary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. On 10 October, a Wiener Philharmoniker in gold is sold for the first time, initially as one ounce and as a quarter ounce.

On one side the organ, on the other the instruments.

In between, fine gold.

Münze Österreich has dedicated the Wiener Philharmoniker to music.

Why 20 Coins at Once? The Strength of Small Denominations

The 1/10 oz is the multitool among gold coins. Compared to the 1 oz version, you do pay a somewhat higher premium per gram – but in return you gain something that is worth its weight in gold during uncertain times: divisibility. Anyone who owns 20 of these small gold discs can sell, gift, or trade selectively without having to touch an entire ounce.

"Gold is the only currency with no liability on the other side." – a principle that reveals its full practical impact especially with small denominations.

The Design – A Tribute to the World's Capital of Music

Since 1989, artist Thomas Pesendorfer has shaped the face of the series with his iconic design. On the obverse, the instruments of the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic are grouped together in a silent concert in gold: four violins, a viola, the central cello, along with a Vienna horn, bassoon, and harp. The reverse majestically depicts the mighty organ of the Vienna Musikverein hall – an architectural detail that turns every coin into a small cultural artifact.

The Coin Tube – More Than Just Packaging

The coins are delivered in the characteristic original tubes from the Austrian Mint. The lid bears the embossed emblem of the mint, while the transparent body allows a direct view of the gleaming stack of fine gold. These tubes are:

  1. Impact-resistant and stackable – ideal for storage in a safe or bank safe-deposit box.
  2. Original manufacturer packaging – a clear advantage for later resale.
  3. Visually appealing – every opened tube is a small experience in itself.

Inflation Hedge and Crisis Protection in Pure Form

Gold looks back on over 6,000 years as a store of value. While paper currencies come and go, the yellow metal has never reached a value of zero. That is precisely why this set of 20 is excellently suited as an inflation hedge and, at the same time, as practical crisis protection. The small denomination also makes it possible to react flexibly in an emergency – an advantage over large bars that should not be underestimated.

Who Benefits Most from This Bundle?

  • Experienced investors who want to supplement their holdings with divisible units.
  • Collectors completing annual years of issue of the most popular European bullion coin.
