Münze Österreich

An orchestra on a quarter of an ounce of gold.

Since October 1989, Münze Österreich has issued the Wiener Philharmoniker in gold.

The organ in the Golden Hall

The organ, enlarged from a product photo.

One side of the coin shows the organ in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, often called the Golden Hall (Goldener Saal).

Its case forms a single whole with the hall, and the silent pipes of its façade still come from the first organ. Behind it today stands the hall’s fourth organ, the work of the Vorarlberg firm Rieger, in place since 2011. The first was presented in 1872, and Anton Bruckner improvised on it.

The inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH and the face value make the Philharmoniker legal tender in Austria.

In the Golden Hall, the Wiener Philharmoniker play their New Year’s Concert.

Today it is broadcast to more than 150 countries. According to the orchestra, around 50 million people watch.

The Big Phil

1,000 ounces of gold

For the coin’s 15th birthday, in 2004, Münze Österreich struck fifteen Philharmoniker coins of 1,000 ounces of gold each. At the time, the Big Phil entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gold coin in the world.

The instruments

The other side shows instruments of the orchestra the coin is named after. Above them are the words WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.

The design is the work of Thomas Pesendorfer, later chief engraver at Münze Österreich. It has remained the same since it was first struck, in gold, silver and platinum.

  1. The Vienna horn

Top left, with its coils and its wide, sweeping bell.

  2. The bassoon

Slender and standing tall, between the horn and the neck of the cello.

  3. The harp

Top right. Its strings reach down to the string instruments.

  4. The string instruments

In the centre, the cello, with two more string instruments on either side.

From the Vienna Mint to the Philharmoniker

  1. 1194

    A ransom

According to tradition, the history of the Vienna Mint begins in this year, with the ransom for King Richard the Lionheart of England.

  2. 1835

    At the Heumarkt

The Hauptmünzamt am Heumarkt is built to plans by Paul Sprenger and completed in 1838. The Philharmoniker is still struck here today.

  3. 1989

    The first Philharmoniker

The Hauptmünzamt becomes Münze Österreich AG, a subsidiary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. On 10 October, a Wiener Philharmoniker in gold is sold for the first time, initially as one ounce and as a quarter ounce.

On one side the organ, on the other the instruments.

In between, fine gold.

Münze Österreich has dedicated the Wiener Philharmoniker to music.

The reverse is no less impressive: here the great organ of the Vienna Musikverein is enthroned in all its splendor. Below this architectural masterpiece, the most important details are embossed – the weight of 1/4 oz, the exceptional fineness of 999.9/1,000, the current year of issue 2026, as well as the face value of 25 Euro. "Gold is the currency of kings, silver the currency of merchants – and the Vienna Philharmonic is the crowning achievement of both worlds in musical perfection."

Why the 1/4 oz Is the Perfect Entry Format

With a compact diameter of 22 mm and a fine weight of 7.78 grams of pure gold, this denomination offers the ideal entry point into the world of gold coins. It is large enough to admire the fascinating details of the minting, yet affordable enough for regular purchases.
