Münze Österreich

An orchestra in silver, since 2008.

In February 2008, the Wiener Philharmoniker was also issued in silver, with the same design as in gold.

Side with the lettering WIENER PHILHARMONIKER above the instruments
Side with REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH above the organ and the weight, metal, year and face value below it

You are looking at the side with the instruments.

The organ in the Golden Hall

The organ, enlarged from a product photo.

One side of the coin shows the organ in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, often called the Golden Hall (Goldener Saal).

Its case forms a single whole with the hall, and the silent pipes of its façade still come from the first organ. Behind it today stands the hall’s fourth organ, the work of the Vorarlberg firm Rieger, in place since 2011. The first was presented in 1872, and Anton Bruckner improvised on it.

In the Golden Hall, the Wiener Philharmoniker play their New Year’s Concert.

50 million

According to the orchestra, about this many people watch the New Year’s Concert, broadcast to more than 150 countries.

The instruments

The other side shows instruments of the orchestra the coin is named after. Above them are the words WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.

The design is the work of Thomas Pesendorfer, later chief engraver at Münze Österreich. It has remained the same since it was first struck, in gold, silver and platinum.

  1. The Vienna horn

Top left, with its coils and its wide, sweeping bell.

  2. The bassoon

Slender and standing tall, between the horn and the neck of the cello.

  3. The harp

Top right. Its strings reach down to the string instruments.

  4. The string instruments

In the centre, the cello, with two more string instruments on either side.

All details enlarged from a product photo.

The metal

SILBER beneath the lettering

On the silver coin, the word SILBER appears in small letters beneath WIENER PHILHARMONIKER, while the gold coin has no word there. The side with the organ reads 1 UNZE FEINSILBER.

From the Vienna Mint to the Philharmoniker

  1. 1194

    A ransom

According to tradition, the history of the Vienna Mint begins in this year, with the ransom for King Richard the Lionheart of England.

  2. 1835

    At the Heumarkt

The Hauptmünzamt am Heumarkt is built to plans by Paul Sprenger and completed in 1838. The Philharmoniker is still struck here today.

  3. 1989

    The first Philharmoniker

The Hauptmünzamt becomes Münze Österreich AG, a subsidiary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. On 10 October, a Wiener Philharmoniker in gold is sold for the first time, initially as one ounce and as a quarter ounce.

  4. 2008

    In silver

In February, the Wiener Philharmoniker appears in silver, one ounce of fine silver at 999 parts per thousand.

On one side the organ, on the other the instruments.

In between, fine silver.

Münze Österreich has dedicated the Wiener Philharmoniker to music.

1 oz fine silver · fineness 999 · 37 mm · face value 1.50 euros

A Masterpiece of Minting Art with Worldwide Recognition

The Vienna Philharmonic silver coin is one of the most successful bullion coins in the world. No wonder – it combines Austrian craftsmanship with a design that makes collectors' hearts beat faster. The richly detailed depiction of the famous organ on the obverse is a true work of art. Every single pipe, every ornament has been immortalized with the utmost precision.

Particularly impressive: the reverse shows a harmonious ensemble of classical orchestral instruments. The violoncello takes the central position, framed by violins, a harp, a horn, and a bassoon. This artful composition makes every coin a small concert for the eyes.

"The Vienna Philharmonic silver coin is more than just an investment – it is a piece of Austrian cultural history that you can hold in your hands."

Why Invest in Silver Coins Right Now?

In times of economic uncertainty, savvy investors are looking for stable assets. Silver coins offer exactly that – and much more! Industrial demand for silver is rising continuously. Whether in electronics, the booming solar industry, or medical technology – the white precious metal is urgently needed everywhere.

At the same time, natural reserves are limited. This combination of rising demand and scarce supply creates ideal conditions for positive performance. But that's not all:

  1. Tax-free profits: After just one year of holding, your sales proceeds are completely tax-free
  2. Perfect crisis protection: Silver retains its value when paper money loses purchasing power
  3. High liquidity: Recognized worldwide and tradeable at any time
  4. Generational wealth: Ideal for long-term wealth protection
  5. Affordable entry: Significantly cheaper compared to gold

Technical Perfection Down to the Smallest Detail

With a diameter of exactly 37 millimeters, the coin fits perfectly in the hand. The fine weight of 31.10 grams corresponds exactly to one troy ounce – the international standard for precious metal coins. The fineness of 999/1,000 guarantees the highest purity. Each specimen is delivered in a protective coin capsule that permanently preserves its flawless condition.

The embossed face value of 1.50 euros makes the coin official legal tender in Austria. Of course, the actual value is many times higher due to its silver content. This status as legal tender provides additional security and underscores the credibility of this form of investment.
