Münze Österreich

Five ounces of gold, coin upon coin.

Since October 1989, Münze Österreich has issued the Wiener Philharmoniker in gold.

Coin tube with gold Wiener Philharmoniker coins, a stack of coins and a single coin beside it

The organ in the Golden Hall

The organ, enlarged from a product photo.

One side of the coin shows the organ in the Great Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, often called the Golden Hall (Goldener Saal).

Its case forms a single whole with the hall, and the silent pipes of its façade still come from the first organ. Behind it today stands the hall’s fourth organ, the work of the Vorarlberg firm Rieger, in place since 2011. The first was presented in 1872, and Anton Bruckner improvised on it.

The inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH and the face value make the Philharmoniker legal tender in Austria.

In the Golden Hall, the Wiener Philharmoniker play their New Year’s Concert.

Today it is broadcast to more than 150 countries. According to the orchestra, around 50 million people watch.

10 coins

Each with half an ounce of gold, plus the coin tube.

Each bears its own face value and the milled edge that Münze Österreich cites as a mark of authenticity.

The instruments

The other side shows instruments of the orchestra the coin is named after. Above them are the words WIENER PHILHARMONIKER.

The design is the work of Thomas Pesendorfer, later chief engraver at Münze Österreich. It has remained the same since it was first struck, in gold, silver and platinum.

  1. The Vienna horn

Top left, with its coils and its wide, sweeping bell.

  2. The bassoon

Slender and standing tall, between the horn and the neck of the cello.

  3. The harp

Top right. Its strings reach down to the string instruments.

  4. The string instruments

In the centre, the cello, with two more string instruments on either side.

All details enlarged from a product photo.

From the Vienna Mint to the Philharmoniker

  1. 1194

    A ransom

According to tradition, the history of the Vienna Mint begins in this year, with the ransom for King Richard the Lionheart of England.

  2. 1835

    At the Heumarkt

The Hauptmünzamt am Heumarkt is built to plans by Paul Sprenger and completed in 1838. The Philharmoniker is still struck here today.

  3. 1989

    The first Philharmoniker

The Hauptmünzamt becomes Münze Österreich AG, a subsidiary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. On 10 October, a Wiener Philharmoniker in gold is sold for the first time, initially as one ounce and as a quarter ounce.

On one side the organ, on the other the instruments.

In between, fine gold.

Münze Österreich has dedicated the Wiener Philharmoniker to music.

Why the Half Ounce in Particular? A Wise Choice with Character

The Gold Vienna Philharmonic in the 1/2 oz variant is, in a sense, the golden middle ground. It is large enough to leave a noticeable weight in your hand – and small enough to be flexibly sold or given away in smaller portions. Those who opt for the full ounce get more precious metal per coin, but lose out on divisibility. The smaller 1/4 oz or 1/10 oz coins, in turn, are charming but usually more expensive in premium per gram. The half ounce? A compromise that shines in both directions.

Ten in One Go – The Power of the Bundle

In this package you receive:

  1. 10x 1/2 oz Gold Vienna Philharmonic 2026 (155.5 g fine gold in total)

The coins rest in a transparent original coin tube with a red lid bearing the emblem of the Austrian Mint. This sturdy plastic sleeve protects the gold pieces from scratches, dust, and improper handling. The tube is, in a sense, the natural home for your treasures – practical, space-saving, professional.

"Gold is the money of kings, silver is the money of gentlemen, barter is the money of peasants – but debt is the money of slaves." – Norm Franz

The Sound of Gold – A Design with Soul

Anyone who has ever experienced the Vienna Philharmonic in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein knows: this coin is more than just a piece of precious metal. It is a piece of Austrian cultural history, cast in 999.9 fine gold. The reverse, with its finely engraved string and wind instruments, almost seems as though you could make the strings resonate. The obverse majestically displays the organ – an architectural masterpiece that has been the hallmark of these gold coins since 1989.

Gold as a Store of Value for Millennia

For over 6,000 years, the yellow metal has served humanity as a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a symbol of permanence. Empires have come and gone, currencies have emerged and vanished – gold has remained. It has never had a value of zero and, as history suggests, will retain its intrinsic value in the future as well. Anyone who acquires ten half Philharmonics today builds a small but fine gold reserve that generations can carry forward.
