Mary and Jesus 2026 – the Pietà as a gilded rarity with a sculpted mother-of-pearl rose

  • Strictly limited: The total mintage is only 100 pieces worldwide. No further pieces will ever be issued.
  • Growth potential: Very high appreciation potential thanks to an uncompromising limitation on the number of pieces and strong demand for Christian collector designs.
  • Rarity: This collector's coin is an exceptionally rare piece for lovers of religious art and discerning numismatists.
  • Exclusive: This precious collector's item is available solely from Kettner Edelmetalle, nowhere else.
  • High-quality finishing: Several technical processes work together: gilding, vibrant coloring, and an applied mother-of-pearl rose turn the coin into a small work of art.
  • Design: The obverse shows the Pietà, Mary holding the body of her son in her arms. The reverse features a shimmering mother-of-pearl rose set within an ornamental gold cross.
  • Investment goal: A rare collector's coin whose strict limitation to 100 pieces holds remarkable appreciation potential.
  • Material / fineness: A full ounce of silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000. This corresponds to 31.1 g of pure fine silver.
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle. The coin was additionally finished afterward in Germany.
  • Country of origin: Germany, issued with a face value of 20 dollars of the Republic of Liberia.

Some designs need no explanation. The Pietà is one of them. For more than five centuries, this image has moved believers and art lovers alike: the grieving Mother of God holding her son, taken down from the cross, in her lap. Kettner Edelmetalle dedicates its own silver ounce to this quiet moment. It is issued in a very low mintage of just 100 pieces, elaborately gilded and colored, and crowned with a sculpted mother-of-pearl rose. Whoever owns one of these pieces holds more than precious metal in their hands. It is a devotional image in coin form.

✔ The obverse: grief and hope in one scene

Mary sits before the wooden cross. Her gaze is lowered, her head framed by a veil and a golden halo. On her lap rests the lifeless body of Jesus, and the bright loincloth stands out clearly against the warm gold tone of the figures. Behind the cross, dazzling light breaks through fiery red clouds. This dramatic contrast can be read as a hint of the hope of resurrection. Golden ornaments climb upward on either side, each embedded with three delicate white roses. A sparkling circle of pearls runs around the entire design, with a small cross medallion at the top. Along the bottom edge is the inscription "1 OZ 9999 FINE SILVER 2026".

The composition follows the tradition of the famous Roman Pietà, which Michelangelo created from Carrara marble in 1498/99. The sculpture still stands in St. Peter's Basilica today. In German-speaking regions, the motif is also known as a Vesperbild. The Italian word "Pietà" means something like mercy or piety.

✔ The reverse: a rose of shimmering mother-of-pearl

Here lies the true highlight. At the center of a richly adorned gold cross, whose arms end in lily-shaped ornaments, rises a sculpted rose made of mother-of-pearl. It visibly projects above the surface of the coin and shimmers in delicate rainbow hues depending on the light. No photo can fully capture this effect. Golden rays, flames, and wisps of smoke on a dark background surround the cross. On the right runs the denomination "20 DOLLARS", and below sits the coat of arms of the issuing country, Liberia.

The rose is far more than mere decoration. In Christian iconography, it is regarded as the quintessential Marian flower. A white rose stands for purity, and in the Litany of Loreto, Mary is invoked as "Rosa mystica", the mysterious rose. The obverse and reverse thus tell a shared story.

Grief and hope, gold and mother-of-pearl, the Renaissance and modern coin artistry: rarely does a single ounce unite so many contrasts into one harmonious whole.

✔ Finishing with precision from Germany

The coin comes from Kettner Edelmetalle. A specialized workshop in Germany then finished it exclusively for us. Several steps work together here. The gilding lends a warm sheen to the figures, ornaments, and edge. The coloring brings the sky, light, and flames to life. And the applied mother-of-pearl rose gives the reverse genuine three-dimensionality. Each of these steps requires the utmost precision so that the colored areas, gold sections, and relief fit together exactly. The reeded edge and the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) grade round off the overall refined impression. The manufacturer information refers to the coin itself, not to the finishing process.

✔ Why 100 pieces make all the difference

Rarity is the true currency of numismatics. Classic bullion coins such as the American Silver Eagle or the Maple Leaf are produced year after year in the millions. Their strength lies in being traded close to material value and being known worldwide. Even many limited silver coins are issued in mintages of several thousand pieces.

Mary and Jesus 2026 plays in an entirely different league. With only 100 pieces, many collectors will never get to see an original specimen. The premium over pure investment silver results from the design, elaborate handcrafting, and rarity. It is precisely these factors that spark the interest of passionate collectors. The strict limitation, the exclusivity at Kettner, and the emotional power of the design make this issue a true rarity within our Religion series.

✔ Silver: a material with history

Beneath the artistic surface lies a full troy ounce of silver with 999.9 fineness. The metal has accompanied humanity for thousands of years as a coinage metal and has been regarded in numerous cultures as a symbol of wealth and prestige. It is durable, retains its physical properties over generations, and is in strong demand in electronics, solar, and medical technology. Many investors also value the precious metal as an inflation hedge and crisis protection. With this issue, however, the collector's value is clearly the main focus.

Good to know: for private individuals, profits from the sale of physical silver in Germany are generally tax-free after a minimum holding period of one year. This makes the coin suitable as a lasting value that can be passed on to the next generation.

✔ A gift with deep meaning

  • for Easter or as a quiet remembrance of Good Friday
  • for baptism, First Communion, confirmation, or Confirmation
  • as a loving gesture for Mother's Day, since hardly any motif depicts maternal love more poignantly
  • in memory of a beloved person
  • for collectors of Marian motifs, sacred art, and religious coinage
