Honey Bee 2025, 1/200 ounce of fine gold, reverse

On the reverse the honey bee flies above the comb, and on the obverse it sits in the flower head of a sunflower. Its time of the year is summer and winter.

Summer and winter · The honey bee

In summer the dance, in winter the cluster.

With the waggle dance a bee shows the others the direction and distance of a food source. If the dancer runs upwards, that means: towards the sun. Each waggle stands for 65 to 75 metres of flight.

The sun need not be visible for this: the pattern of polarised skylight is enough. In 1973 Karl von Frisch received the Nobel Prize for his research on bees, together with Konrad Lorenz and Nikolaas Tinbergen.

At the peak in May the queen can lay more than 1,000 eggs a day, and a summer bee lives about six weeks. As early as July, some winter bees live alongside many summer bees.

In winter they sit in the winter cluster. At its outer shell it is around 13 °C; when the outer bees cool down, they push inwards, and those that have warmed up move outwards. The warmth comes from muscle shivering.

“Honey bees are flower-constant: during a foraging flight they always stay true to one kind of flower.”
Deutscher Imkerbund

The Honey Bee 2025 is one of the smallest gold coins in the world and combines the finest minting craftsmanship with the enduring substance of pure gold. With a diameter of just 14.00 mm, the coin weighs in at 0.16 g of fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – a convenient entry point into physical gold investment that nonetheless carries the full value of the precious metal. The worldwide mintage limited to 5,000 pieces – a very low mintage – makes this issue a sought-after rarity among Liberia's smallest gold coins.

A design full of life: bee, honeycomb and sunflower

The design of the Honey Bee 2025 tells an entire natural history in the smallest of formats – making full use of the possibilities offered by Proof quality. The contrast between mirrored surfaces and matted design elements makes the fine details stand out in striking relief.

Obverse

At the center is a richly detailed honey bee in flight. Its widely spread wings show fine veining, while the antennae, compound eyes, hairy thorax and characteristically striped abdomen are precisely rendered. Behind it extends a honeycomb pattern of hexagonal cells; in the upper area the honeycomb cells are set in a darker tone, creating an effective contrast against the golden background. In the lower part of the field, a sunflower and additional blossoms bloom as a symbol of the bee's food sources. Along the upper left edge runs the inscription "HONIGBIENE 2025", while "1/200 OZ 9999 FINE GOLD" is stamped on the lower right.

Reverse

The reverse shows a large sunflower with a textured center, on which a honey bee is collecting nectar. Three additional small bees swarm around the blossom, creating a lively pollination scene. The face value "25 DOLLARS" identifies the coin as official legal tender of the Republic of Liberia, and a small emblem beneath the blossom rounds off the design. The reeded edge protects the minting and underscores the clean workmanship.

Full-value investment gold – substance is what counts

As charming as the bee motif may be, the real reason to buy is the fine gold it contains. Here you are not purchasing mere decoration, but recognized investment gold whose value is tied to the gold price. Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has served mankind as a store of value for over 6,000 years – it has never had a value of zero, possesses intrinsic value, and is recognized worldwide as a means of payment and exchange. As a scarce good with limited supply, it is traditionally regarded as an inflation hedge and a proven form of crisis protection whenever confidence in paper money wavers.

Small units like this 1/200-ounce coin are particularly well suited to building up physical gold holdings step by step – value upon value, much like a bee collecting its honey. Over the years, such small quantities add up to a considerable fortune, remain highly liquid, and can be resold at any time. Another advantage of physical gold: after a holding period of at least one year, profits from its sale are generally tax-free. And even though low mintages like this one are coveted among lovers of collector's coins, the focus with this piece remains on the lasting value of the fine gold – not a mere design object, but genuine investment gold.

Just as the bee diligently gathers value upon value, piece by piece one builds a foundation of real gold – enduring, tangible, and something that can be passed down through generations.

This makes the Honey Bee 2025 a fitting way to give genuine investment gold as a gift: whether for a birthday or another personal occasion, what is being presented here is not a fleeting gift, but an asset of pure fine gold. The artistic design provides the personal touch, while the precious metal itself provides the substance.
