Friends of the Forest – Fawn 2026: colorful rarity from Niue with just 30 pieces

  • Strictly limited: Worldwide, there is only a mintage of just 30 pieces, with no further pieces planned
  • Growth opportunities: High potential for value appreciation thanks to consistent limitation and strong demand for colored animal designs
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin for discerning collections
  • Investment goal: An exclusive collector's item whose extreme scarcity holds great long-term potential for positive performance
  • Minting quality: Highest possible minting quality Proof (PP) with mirror-finish field
  • Design: Colored fawn with large, doe-like eyes, two blue-feathered mountain bluebirds, and a wreath of violet lupines
  • Material / Fineness: A full ounce (31.1 g) of purest gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000
  • Manufacturer: B.H. Mayer, a German mint steeped in tradition, with roots dating back to 1871 in Pforzheim
  • Country of origin: Germany; issued as official legal tender of Niue with a face value of 100 dollars

Thirty. That's how many examples of this coin exist in the entire world, no more. Anyone who adds the fawn from the "Friends of the Forest" series to their collection owns one of the rarest animal designs of the 2026 vintage. Among colored gold coins in Proof quality, such an exceptionally low mintage is the absolute exception. Here, delicacy and exclusivity meet – and all on a full troy ounce of fine gold.

A design that touches you instantly

The obverse shows a young deer resting relaxed on the dark forest floor. Large, shining eyes. Pricked-up ears. A reddish-brown coat dotted with light spots. These spots, by the way, are more than mere decoration: in the first months of life, they camouflage the fawn in the interplay of light and shadow while it lies motionless in the undergrowth.

A small bird with brilliant blue plumage and an orange breast has settled on the fawn's back, while a second one is just gliding in. The scene is framed by leaves in gold relief, magenta-colored blossoms, and violet lupines. At the top, an inscription plate reads "FRIENDS OF THE FOREST". The appeal lies in the contrast: the colored areas shine against the bright background, while the unpainted vines refract the light in relief. This creates a depth that a pure bullion coin cannot offer.

This brilliance is made possible by the Proof finish, known internationally as Proof. Carefully polished dies and blanks are used, so that mirrored surfaces and finely matted details stand out with particular clarity.

The reverse side with King Charles III

The reverse bears the portrait of King Charles III along with the engraver's initials JC. Surrounding it are the inscriptions "CHARLES III", "NIUE 2026", "100 DOLLARS", and "1oz 9999 GOLD". The island nation of Niue in the South Pacific is in free association with New Zealand and is valued by collectors for its creative issues. With a diameter of 38.60 mm, this gold coin offers plenty of space for the richly detailed design.

Why just 30 pieces make the difference

Even exclusive premium issues in Proof often appear in mintages of several hundred pieces. The silver version of the same fawn design is limited to 600 pieces, twenty times as many. The gold version, however, remains reserved for a tiny circle of collectors with just 30 pieces.

The smaller the mintage, the faster coins disappear into permanent collections – and the more sought-after they become if they ever change hands later on.

This natural scarcity is the basis for the potential for value appreciation that distinguishes strictly limited collector's issues. Naturally, no one can give binding price forecasts. What is certain, however, is that such a rarity doesn't appear often.

Advantages and notes in comparison

  • Compared to the silver version: One-twentieth of the mintage – and the durability of the "big brother" of its smaller silver counterpart
  • Compared to classic bullion coins such as Krugerrand or Maple Leaf: Instead of unlimited minting, a fixed ceiling; instead of a standard design, an emotional, colored work of art
  • Collector's value: With this issue, the numismatic value clearly outweighs the pure material value, ideal for anyone seeking exclusivity
  • Care: Colored coins in Proof quality should preferably only be handled with gloves and stored in their case, so that the mirror finish and coloring remain flawless over time

Fine gold with history: a value that outlasts generations

For over 6,000 years, the yellow precious metal has been regarded as the epitome of permanence. Even in ancient Egypt it served as a unit of measure for trade, and kings and emperors wore it as a sign of their power. It is the oldest currency in the world, thanks to its intrinsic value it has never been worth zero, and it retains its physical properties over centuries. It is no coincidence that central banks remain among the largest holders of gold worldwide to this day.

The coin is also convincing from a tax perspective: as a gold coin with 999.9 fineness, it is generally exempt from VAT, and profits from a later sale in Germany are, in principle, tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. Many buyers also value the precious metal as a building block for inflation hedge and crisis protection. With this fawn, however, the passion for collecting is clearly at the center.

Elegantly presented in a case

The coin is delivered in an elegant, glossy black case with a design card in the lid. This provides optimal protection and allows for immediate, stylish presentation – in your own display case or as an unforgettable gift for a birth, a christening, or for any nature lover. Anyone wishing to secure one of the 30 pieces should therefore not wait too long.
