Balerna in Ticino
Where Switzerland borders Italy
The name combines Valori and Cambi, the Italian words for values and exchange. The company was founded in 1961 in Chiasso, the town on the border with Italy. In 1967 it moved its headquarters to Balerna, about two kilometres away.
Its neighbours began in Chiasso, too. Today, three large gold refineries lie in the Mendrisiotto within 4.5 kilometres as the crow flies: Valcambi in Balerna, MKS PAMP in Castel San Pietro and Argor-Heraeus in Mendrisio.
In 2024, three out of four Valcambi employees commuted across the border from Italy.

From fire to fine gold
In Balerna, swissinfo watched molten gold flow straight from the crucible into the moulds for the 400-ounce standard bar, the large bar of the London gold market.
The bar states in thousandths how pure its gold is. For its large bars, the LBMA requires at least 995.0 thousandths. These bars bear 999,9, known in the gold trade as “four nines”.
0.1 milligrams
That is the most anything else may make up in one gram of gold with a fineness of 999.9. All the rest is gold.

Weight, fineness and the assayer-melter’s mark
Valcambi punches its minted bars out of specially rolled metal sheets. In Balerna, swissinfo saw the one-gram bars moving along the conveyor belt to quality control.
It also bears the serial number on the front; the back is left smooth.
ESSAYEUR FONDEUR is French for assayer and melter. Only those permitted both to melt and to assay may use this combined mark, and Valcambi applies it itself as a licensed assayer-melter. At Valcambi, they call it an oath engraved in the metal.
The certificate
One bar, one card, one number

AA 000001

The orange card is the assay certificate. On its back are the serial number at the top and ASSAY CERTIFICATE with the fineness and weight at the bottom.
The number on the card is the same as the one on the bar.
On this card, Certified assayer is followed by the ESSAYEUR FONDEUR mark.
Every bar bears the mark of those who made it.

- Investment goal: With gold bars, you can very effectively protect your wealth from inflation.
- Preservation of value: Gold bars serve as the perfect store of value, safeguarding and increasing the true value of your wealth.
- Protection: Especially in times of inflation, recession, and high government debt, you can protect your wealth with gold.
- Swiss precision: Minted by Valcambi, one of the world's most renowned and LBMA-certified gold refineries.
- Small entry size: Just half a gram of fine gold – an affordable entry into physical gold investment.
The 0.5 g gold bar by Valcambi is an ideal starting point for entering the world of physical precious metals. With a fine weight of half a gram, the value of this bar rests entirely on pure fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1000 – that is, 24 karat. Those who want to start small receive here fully-fledged investment gold, whose value is directly linked to the gold price. And the great thing about it: small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable fortune. The design is the personal touch, while the fine gold it contains is the substance and the real reason for buying.
Investment gold from one of the best refineries in the world
Valcambi, headquartered in Balerna, Switzerland, is among the largest and most respected precious metal refineries in the world. In addition to gold, the company also processes silver, platinum, and palladium – but its reputation rests above all on fine gold of the highest quality. The mint is certified by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), a globally recognized quality seal for fineness and purity. Every bar minted by Valcambi bears the distinctive Valcambi logo, the inscription "0.5 g fine gold 999.9," the Essayeur-Fondeur stamp, as well as an individual serial number. The reverse is kept simple and features the inscription "Valcambi Suisse."
Blister card with certificate of authenticity
The bar is securely housed in a bright orange blister card with a modern circuit-board design. This packaging permanently protects the Brilliant Uncirculated fine gold and simultaneously serves as a certificate of authenticity with a matching serial number. This keeps the new item in flawless condition and ensures it can be verified at any time – an important advantage for future resale. By the way, you should not open the sealed blister: a piece in its original, minted packaging is easier to trade worldwide.
Inflation and crisis protection in small denominations
Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It possesses intrinsic value, has never been worth zero, and protects against loss of purchasing power. As inflation hedge and crisis protection, physical gold preserves your wealth when trust in fiat currency wanes. It is not without reason that central banks around the world hoard enormous gold reserves – a clear sign that even central banks have only limited trust in their own paper money. Especially in small denominations, your gold remains flexible: you can sell exactly the amount you need at any given time.
Who is the 0.5 g Valcambi gold bar suitable for?
This small bar is aimed at investors who want to build up physical gold step by step – without the need for large starting capital. Those familiar with Valcambi's well-known CombiBar, the 50-gram gold sheet made up of individually detachable 0.5-gram segments, will recognize the same principle here in single-unit format: maximum divisibility for maximum flexibility. Unlike the larger CombiBar, however, the 0.5 g bar is offered as a standalone investment product, sought after both in Germany and internationally. It also makes a meaningful choice as a genuine gold investment for a christening, birthday, or wedding: you're not giving away a mere souvenir, but a real asset made of fine gold.
Gold has shone for thousands of years – and will never lose its shine. With the 0.5 g Valcambi bar, you secure Swiss fine gold in its purest form.
Profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This way, you combine long-term preservation of value with high liquidity – because gold can be traded worldwide and converted back into cash at any time. Whether as the first building block of your precious metals reserve or as a complement to larger bars and coins: the 0.5 g gold bar by Valcambi represents wealth-building in small, secure steps.
