Balerna in Ticino
Where Switzerland borders Italy
The name combines Valori and Cambi, the Italian words for values and exchange. The company was founded in 1961 in Chiasso, the town on the border with Italy. In 1967 it moved its headquarters to Balerna, about two kilometres away.
Its neighbours began in Chiasso, too. Today, three large gold refineries lie in the Mendrisiotto within 4.5 kilometres as the crow flies: Valcambi in Balerna, MKS PAMP in Castel San Pietro and Argor-Heraeus in Mendrisio.
In 2024, three out of four Valcambi employees commuted across the border from Italy.

From fire to fine gold
In Balerna, swissinfo watched molten gold flow straight from the crucible into the moulds for the 400-ounce standard bar, the large bar of the London gold market.
The bar states in thousandths how pure its gold is. For its large bars, the LBMA requires at least 995.0 thousandths. These bars bear 999,9, known in the gold trade as “four nines”.
0.1 milligrams
That is the most anything else may make up in one gram of gold with a fineness of 999.9. All the rest is gold.

Weight, fineness and the assayer-melter’s mark
Valcambi punches its minted bars out of specially rolled metal sheets. In Balerna, swissinfo saw the one-gram bars moving along the conveyor belt to quality control.
They also bear the serial number on the front and valcambi suisse on the back.
ESSAYEUR FONDEUR is French for assayer and melter. Only those permitted both to melt and to assay may use this combined mark, and Valcambi applies it itself as a licensed assayer-melter. At Valcambi, they call it an oath engraved in the metal.
The certificate
One bar, one card, one number

AA 300250

The orange card is the assay certificate. On its back are the serial number at the top and ASSAY CERTIFICATE with the fineness and weight at the bottom.
The number on the card is the same as the one on the bar.
On this card, Certified assayer is followed by the ESSAYEUR FONDEUR mark.
Every bar bears the mark of those who made it.

Valcambi: One of the Great Names of the World Gold Market
Valcambi SA was founded in 1961 in Chiasso in the canton of Ticino and has been based in Balerna since 1967 – the name comes from Italian and means roughly "values and exchange." What was once a small refinery has grown into one of the most significant precious metal refineries in the world. The company is accredited as an LBMA Good Delivery refinery for gold and silver, and additionally through the LPPM for platinum and palladium. Whoever buys Valcambi buys Swiss precision: excellent craftsmanship, flawless surfaces and very high purity.
This is exactly what makes Valcambi one of the most popular international gold bar manufacturers. Whether in Zurich, Dubai, Singapore or Frankfurt – the simple Quadrino logo and the lettering valcambi suisse are a hallmark of quality among dealers, banks and investors. In addition to gold bars, silver bars, platinum and palladium products as well as the well-known CombiBar also come from Balerna. An argument that counts in a crisis: recognition creates demand, demand creates liquidity.

Inflation Protection From 6,000 Years of Experience
Gold is the oldest currency in the world. Already in ancient Egypt it served as a unit of measure for trade, later kings and emperors wore it as a sign of their power, and it traveled across half the globe along the Silk Road. In the 19th and 20th centuries, paper money under the gold standard could even be redeemed directly for the metal. Gold has outlived every currency that was ever tied to it – and it has never had a value of zero, because its intrinsic value lies within itself.
Gold is God's money: scarce, incorruptible, impossible to multiply – and it has shone for millennia without ever losing its luster.
Fiat money is printed, controlled and expanded as needed. Gold is not. Supply is limited, mining is expensive, demand is global – all of which contributes to its long-term value stability. That is why gold serves as a store of value when confidence in paper money wavers, and why central banks themselves hold the largest gold reserves in the world: a remarkable admission regarding their own product. For you, this means specifically: these 50 grams protect you against the loss of purchasing power, cushion currency risks and remain usable worldwide as a medium of exchange – even when political or economic turbulence dominates the picture.
50 Grams – The Golden Middle Ground
Compared to a 100 g or kilo bar, the capital outlay for the 50 g bar is significantly more moderate, and you can spread your gold across several units instead of putting it all into a single piece. Compared to small denominations such as 1 g, 5 g or 10 g, it scores with a more favorable premium per gram – after all, one bar is simply easier to produce than fifty tiny ones. Those seeking maximum divisibility reach for the CombiBar; those wanting compact value density in a single piece choose this fine gold bar. And those who love designs enjoy combining it with gold coins such as the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic.
Taxes, Storage, Passing It On
Investment gold is exempt from VAT – you pay no sales tax on the metal. And: profits from the sale of gold are generally tax-free if the holding period of at least one year has been met. Thanks to its compact size, the bar can be stored practically anywhere – in a home safe, a safe deposit box, or professionally stored. Gold is durable, does not corrode and retains its physical properties across generations. This is exactly what makes it a building block for your own retirement provisions and an heirloom you can pass on to children and grandchildren.
A bar that needs no explanation: 50 grams of Swiss fine gold, certified, sealed, tradable worldwide. The big brother of small silver – and a calm anchor in turbulent times.
