Balerna in Ticino
Where Switzerland borders Italy
The name combines Valori and Cambi, the Italian words for values and exchange. The company was founded in 1961 in Chiasso, the town on the border with Italy. In 1967 it moved its headquarters to Balerna, about two kilometres away.
Its neighbours began in Chiasso, too. Today, three large gold refineries lie in the Mendrisiotto within 4.5 kilometres as the crow flies: Valcambi in Balerna, MKS PAMP in Castel San Pietro and Argor-Heraeus in Mendrisio.
In 2024, three out of four Valcambi employees commuted across the border from Italy.

From fire to fine gold
In Balerna, swissinfo watched molten gold flow straight from the crucible into the moulds for the 400-ounce standard bar, the large bar of the London gold market.
The bar states in thousandths how pure its gold is. For its large bars, the LBMA requires at least 995.0 thousandths. These bars bear 999,9, known in the gold trade as “four nines”.
0.55 millimetres
That is how thin the one-gram bar is, at 8.5 by 15 millimetres in size.

Weight, fineness and the assayer-melter’s mark
Valcambi punches its minted bars out of specially rolled metal sheets. In Balerna, swissinfo saw the one-gram bars moving along the conveyor belt to quality control.
They also bear the serial number on the front and valcambi suisse on the back.
ESSAYEUR FONDEUR is French for assayer and melter. Only those permitted both to melt and to assay may use this combined mark, and Valcambi applies it itself as a licensed assayer-melter. At Valcambi, they call it an oath engraved in the metal.
The certificate
One bar, one card, one number

AA 006119

The orange card is the assay certificate. On its back are the serial number at the top and ASSAY CERTIFICATE with the fineness and weight at the bottom.
The number on the card is the same as the one on the bar.
Every bar bears the mark of those who made it.

- Preservation of value: The bar is a reliable store of value that preserves the true purchasing power of your wealth and secures it over the years.
- Protection: Especially in times of inflation, recession and spiraling government debt, physical gold puts your wealth on a crisis-proof foundation.
- Inflation hedge: Fine gold acts as a proven inflation hedge, because its supply is limited – unlike paper money, which can be printed at will.
- Crisis protection: Small bars are excellently suited as a divisible means of payment and exchange, making them a practical crisis protection for emergencies.
Why Valcambi in particular?
Valcambi was founded in 1961 and produces in Balerna, Switzerland, in the far south of Ticino. The abbreviation "CHI" in the mint mark, together with the addition "Essayeur Fondeur", stands for verified origin. As a manufacturer recognized by the LBMA, Valcambi enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide – its bars are readily recognized and accepted internationally. The company is also known for the divisible Valcambi gold sheet, the so-called CombiBar. The classically minted 1-gram bar offered here is the most compact way to start out with pure fine gold.
Minting, Dimensions and Packaging
The obverse shows the characteristic square Valcambi diamond logo along with the details "1 g", "fine gold" and the fineness "999.9". The reverse bears the embossed lettering valcambi suisse. The bar measures approximately 15 × 8.5 × 0.55 mm and weighs exactly 1 gram with a fineness of 999.9/1,000. Embedded in the orange blister card – Valcambi's brand color – the gold remains optimally protected, while the serial number and the assay certificate document its authenticity. In this way, the precious metal retains its shine and properties permanently, across generations.
Fully-Fledged Investment Gold in a Small Format
Even though this bar impresses with its compact size and the personal touch of its packaging, what you are acquiring here is not a mere souvenir, but recognized investment gold. The reason to buy is the substance itself – minted fine gold, whose value is directly tied to the gold price. Small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable fortune, and anyone who buys regularly builds up a physical gold holding step by step. This is precisely why the small Valcambi bar is also well suited for passing on genuine investment gold on occasions such as birth, christening or wedding – what is given is a real asset, not mere decoration.
Gold is the oldest currency in the world. It has never had a value of zero, has outlasted every paper currency, and has protected against the loss of purchasing power for over 6,000 years.
Physical gold has an intrinsic, globally recognized value and is highly liquid – a gram can be sold again at any time and converted into cash. While central banks can increase fiat money at will, the gold supply remains scarce; it is not without reason that these very central banks are among the largest gold holders in the world. As investment gold, the purchase is also exempt from VAT, and profits from a later sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. Whether as an entry point into physical gold investment, for continuous wealth building in small steps, or as a solid building block for retirement provision – the 1-gram Valcambi bar is a well-considered choice. You can conveniently buy it as minted fine gold and add it to your holdings.
