Deutsche Mark · 2026 Edition

The coin that passed through our hands for half a century. When memory turns to silver.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche MarkReverse with the eagle

You are looking at the value side.

It jingled in coat pockets, lay on shop counters and in piggy banks. The One between the oak twigs went through millions of hands until the farewell of the D-Mark. Now its image returns as a homage, struck in fine silver.

  • Mintage 250 pieces
  • Reverse Proof
  • 62.21 g

It was never just money. It was a promise.

On 20 June 1948, every resident of the three western zones exchanged 40 Reichsmarks for 40 D-Marks, the “Kopfgeld” or per-head quota. The very next day, shop windows were full to bursting. The new currency set off the economic miracle.

In the Bundesbank’s words, the D-Mark enjoyed trust from its first day and kept it to the very end. Over five decades it also became an international symbol of stable money.

12 billion

Some never fully let go of it: according to the Bundesbank, around twelve billion D-Marks have still not been exchanged, more than half of them in coins.

From the Kopfgeld to the farewell

Half a century of the Mark

  1. 1948

    A new beginning

On 20 June the currency reform takes effect. From the next day, the Deutsche Mark is the only legal tender in the three western zones.

  2. 1950

The One with the oak leaves

At the end of 1950 the one-mark coin enters circulation, designed by Josef Bernhart of Munich. Its motif remains unchanged until the farewell of the D-Mark.

  3. 1951

    The Heiermann

Albert Holl’s silver five-mark coin is struck for the first time and circulates from May 1952. It remains the only circulation coin of the Federal Republic made of silver.

  4. 1957

    The Bundesbank

On 1 August the Deutsche Bundesbank takes over from the Bank deutscher Länder, which had issued the first D-Marks in 1948.

  5. 1990

    One Mark for everyone

“If the D-Mark comes, we stay. If it doesn’t, we’ll go to it” was a slogan at the Monday demonstrations. On 1 July 1990 it came to the GDR, even before German reunification.

  6. 2001

    The farewell

In farewell, the Deutsche Bundesbank issues the One as a gold coin, one million pieces in fine gold. Since 1 January 2002 Germans have paid in euros.

The motif

An image everyone knows

The value side follows the one-mark coin of the past. Anyone who once held the Mark recognises it at once.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche Mark
Reverse with the eagle
The large One
Clear and unadorned, it stands in the centre, just as on the one-mark coin designed by the Munich artist Josef Bernhart.
Two oak twigs
To the left and right, two oak twigs with acorns frame the numeral. Oak leaves already graced the pfennig coins, and the German 1, 2 and 5 cent coins still show them today.
The eagle
On the other side the eagle spreads its wings, worked down to the last feather. The wings carry the face value and Republic of Liberia in small letters.

The finish

Two ways to catch the light

Proof

The field shines deep like a mirror, the motif lies on it in matte relief. With this finish, dies and blanks are specially polished and the blanks are fed into the press one by one.

Your coinReverse Proof

Reverse Proof

Here it is the other way round: the field is frosted, the motif gleams like a mirror. Every leaf vein and every feather catches the light.

Some things pass.

The memory remains.

The D-Mark is history. Its image in precious metal remains, for you and for those you will one day pass it on to.

250

pieces in the edition

62.21 g fine silver · 999,9/1.000 · 55 mm · Reverse Proof · Case

An own edition by Kettner Edelmetalle, not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank. The issuing country is the Republic of Liberia, hence the face value in dollars.

Deutsche Mark 2026 – two ounces of fine silver in Reverse Proof

  • Strictly limited: Only 250 pieces of this 2-ounce coin exist worldwide
  • Growth potential: Very high appreciation potential due to the limited mintage and the strong demand for D-Mark designs
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin for discerning numismatists
  • Investment goal: An exclusive collector's item whose strict limitation holds special potential in the long term
  • Design: The legendary 1-DM coin with oak branches and acorns, the eagle on the reverse – mirror-polished on a matte background
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle
  • Country of origin: Germany

Hardly any coin has accompanied so many Germans throughout their lives as the small Mark with the oak leaves. Minted from 1950 to 2001, it jingled in every pocket and lay in every till. Over time, it became a symbol of stability and the economic miracle. Kettner Edelmetalle is now bringing this icon back – not in copper-nickel, but in 62.21 grams of the purest silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000. The result is a true rarity that impressively combines memory and precious metal.

A design that makes history

On the value side, as familiar, stands the large digit "1", framed by two finely chased oak branches, each with an acorn. Below it follows the inscription "DEUTSCHE MARK" and the year 2026, surrounded by a delicate beaded circle. Anyone holding the coin in their hand immediately recognizes the familiar image. Only now on an impressive 55 millimeters.

The other side belongs to the eagle. With widely spread wings, finely detailed plumage and powerful talons, it dominates the entire coin field. A filigree coat of arms with a sailing ship adorns its tail. To the left and right within the plumage are the face value of 25 dollars and the inscription "Republic of Liberia". Above runs the legend "2 UNZE 9999 FEINSILBER", below again "DEUTSCHE MARK". A reeded edge rounds off the overall design.

Reverse Proof: shine exactly where it belongs

The special feature lies in the finish. In the classic Proof, the field is mirrored while the motifs remain matte. Reverse Proof reverses this principle: the background receives a fine, silky-matte surface, while the eagle, oak leaves and lettering shine mirror-bright by contrast. This makes the motifs stand out almost three-dimensionally, as if floating above the coin's surface. For collectors seeking an unusual finish, this is a true highlight.

Why 250 pieces make all the difference

With a mintage of only 250 pieces worldwide, one thing is clear: not every collector who wants this coin will actually get one. It is precisely this scarcity that creates the appeal. Classic silver coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Krugerrand are produced in the millions and are traded primarily according to their metal value. Here, alongside the fine silver, it is above all the rarity that counts. The premium over a bullion ounce is the price for exclusivity, refinement and design – in return, you receive a piece that has few equals on the collector's market.

The D-Mark is more than a currency of yesterday. It is a piece of German identity – now immortalized anew in just 250 silver coins in Reverse Proof.

The weight of two ounces also gives the coin a presence that a one-ounce coin simply cannot achieve. More surface area means more detail. And more detail means more enjoyment when viewing it.

From circulating coin to precious metal classic

The 1-DM coin was once immortalized in precious metal before: in 2001, shortly before the introduction of the euro, it was issued as a Goldmark in fine gold. This edition remains highly sought after among collectors to this day. The 2026 edition continues this tradition – additionally featuring the eagle as a large-format reverse design and struck in pure fine silver instead of the earlier copper-nickel alloy of the circulating coin. In this way, an everyday object becomes a lasting collector's item.

Silver with character – and clear advantages

Silver has been a coinage metal, medium of exchange and symbol of prosperity for thousands of years. It is durable, tradable worldwide and, thanks to its role in electronics, solar and medical technology, possesses genuine intrinsic value. Many also value the white precious metal as an inflation hedge and as tangible crisis protection. With this coin, however, the passion for collecting is clearly at the forefront.

Another advantage: in Germany, profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. And because silver retains its properties over generations, this collector's coin is excellently suited as an heirloom for children and grandchildren.

Who this coin is worth it for

  • Collectors of German monetary history and D-Mark enthusiasts
  • Numismatists seeking limited special editions in exceptional minting quality
  • Lovers of large-format 2-ounce coins with great depth of detail
  • Anyone wanting to give a lasting gift with meaning

The coin is delivered in a case – protected and presented in style at the same time. Anyone wishing to own a piece of the D-Mark in the purest fine silver should not hesitate for long. With such a very low mintage, this edition is likely to find its owners quickly.
