Name and year
The series
One animal a year since 1996
In 1996 The Perth Mint became the first mint to release an Australian lunar programme, as it states. Each series follows the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Lunar I from 1996 to 2007, Lunar II from 2008 to 2019, Lunar III from 2020 to 2031.
Each year one animal is added, and the snake, the horse and the goat each have separate designs for gold and silver. The snake is the sixth animal of Lunar III, the horse the seventh, the goat the eighth.
Since the snake of 2025, the effigy side has shown King Charles III, portrayed by Dan Thorne.

The mint
The P of Perth
The Perth Mint was founded in a gold rush. In 1892 a find near Coolgardie set off Australia’s second great gold rush of the 19th century. Premier Sir John Forrest did not want the gold to leave Western Australia for processing and secured a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth.
On 20 June 1899 the first gold was processed and struck there, and The Perth Mint has operated continuously on the same site in East Perth ever since. The sovereigns from Perth carried a small P above the date.
The designs of the snake, the horse and the goat also bear a P, as The Perth Mint’s mintmark. Today it is owned by the State of Western Australia.

The impressive relief depicts a powerful horse in the foreground, whose muscular build and flowing mane radiate pure energy. In the background, a young foal gallops – a symbol of continuity and the passing of values across generations. The mountainous landscape in the background lends the design additional depth and underscores the freedom of these majestic creatures.

Technical Perfection Meets Artistic Brilliance
With a diameter of 32.60 mm, this half-ounce of fine silver offers ample space for the detailed depiction. The satin finish with polished accents creates a fascinating contrast that further enhances the three-dimensionality of the design. Particularly impressive: the mint marks "P" and "E" on either side of the design guarantee the authenticity of this precious piece.
On the reverse, the dignified portrait of King Charles III reigns – a mark of royal minting and the associated enduring value. The face value of 0.50 AUD makes this coin an official legal tender of Australia, further underscoring its legitimacy.
Why the Lunar III Series Enriches Your Portfolio
The third generation of the legendary Lunar series sets new standards. While the first two series have already achieved cult status and are in some cases traded at considerable premiums, the Lunar III series still offers the opportunity to be part of it from the very beginning. Collectors particularly appreciate the limited availability – once a year of issue sells out, prices on the secondary market tend to rise based on experience.
- Tax-free gains: After just one year of holding, your gains are completely tax-free
- Industrial demand: Silver is indispensable in electronics, solar technology, and medicine
- Perfect denomination: The 1/2 oz is ideally suited for flexible investments
- Collector premiums: Lunar coins often develop considerable appreciation in value
- Crisis resilience: Physical silver retains its value even in turbulent times
A Look to the Future: Your Personal Wealth Protection
In times of rising inflation and economic uncertainty, more and more people are seeking stable values. Silver has proven itself as a reliable store of value over millennia. Unlike paper money, it cannot be multiplied at will – its scarcity is real and measurable.
The compact size of the 1/2 oz makes this coin particularly attractive for beginners and experienced investors alike. It makes it possible to enter the precious metals market with a manageable capital outlay or to meaningfully supplement existing holdings. The practical coin capsule optimally protects your investment from environmental influences.
