The elephant
The eldest knows the way.
Elephants live in families. A herd usually consists of related females and their young, led by the matriarch, as a rule the oldest and most experienced. She knows where to find food and water. When danger looms, the herd forms a ring, the young in the middle.
In a study published in 2001, researchers used playback experiments to show that the oldest female’s better ability to discriminate can influence the social knowledge of the whole group. Elephants can communicate through deep calls that lie partly below the range of human hearing and carry a long way.
The trunk is nose and upper lip at once. It lifts a log, and just as well a single piece of straw.

Two Coins, One Masterpiece: The Black & White Concept
The obverse of both coins features the iconic elephant design that has made the Somalia Elephant series world-famous for years. But here comes the decisive twist: the elephants shine in a dramatic black-and-white coloring. Light and dark, light and shadow – this contrast gives the majestic animals an entirely new visual depth. It's as if you were experiencing the African savanna in two different moods. The reverse bears the official state emblem of the Republic of Somalia and the face value of 200 Shillings.
Each individual coin measures 38.60 mm in diameter and is made of purest silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000. Together, the two pieces have a combined fine weight of 62.21 grams. Brilliant Uncirculated, flawless, and packaged in an elegant case – this is how the set reaches its new owner.
Why This Collector's Coin Is So Highly Sought After
The Somalia Elephant series enjoys an outstanding reputation among numismatists worldwide. A new design appears each year, and that is exactly what makes the series so exciting: no year of issue resembles another. However, the Black & White Set stands out significantly even within this already popular series. The black-and-white coloring is not only aesthetically appealing – it transforms an already coveted coin into a true rarity.
With a very low mintage of just 500 pieces worldwide, this set ranks among the rarest issues in the entire history of the Somalia Elephant. For collectors, this means: whoever acts secures a piece of numismatic exclusivity.
Top Quality from the Bavarian Main Mint
Behind this extraordinary set stands one of Germany's most tradition-rich mints: the Bavarian Main Mint. For centuries, this name has stood for precision, craftsmanship perfection, and uncompromising quality. The fact that this very mint is responsible for production underscores the high standards the Black & White Set sets for itself.
Of course, each set is delivered with a certificate of authenticity. This gives you the assurance of holding an authentic and verified collector's item in your hands.
Silver as a Timeless Asset – and a Passion
Silver looks back on thousands of years of history as a coinage metal. It has been valued by cultures around the globe as a symbol of prosperity and served as a reliable means of payment for centuries. Even today, the white precious metal has lost none of its fascination – quite the opposite. Industrial demand, for instance in electronics, solar technology, and medicine, continues to grow steadily. At the same time, supply is limited, which makes silver an extremely interesting long-term store of value.
Good to know: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided the holding period is at least one year. Another advantage for anyone who views physical precious metal as part of their long-term strategy – whether as crisis protection or as cross-generational retirement provision.
Who Is This Set Suited For?
- Collectors of the Somalia Elephant series, who want to add an extraordinary highlight to their collection
- Numismatists, who appreciate colored special editions with an extremely low mintage
- Precious metal enthusiasts, who want to combine the intrinsic value of silver with the exclusivity of a limited minting
- Gift-givers, who are looking for a truly unique and value-stable present
