The kangaroo of the year

The year’s gold design, on a gilded background

The Perth Mint shows a large kangaroo just before it leaps over a dried-up creek bed. It calls the windmill and water tank beside it vital installations on farms across the whole country.

Instead of the plain P, the design bears the mark P125, for the 125th anniversary of The Perth Mint.

The name

Why it is called Nugget

The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.

This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.

Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series

A new kangaroo every year

The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.

There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

The finish

Proof with a gilded background

On this issue it is not the kangaroo that is gilded but the ground: background and details carry 24-carat gold, while the kangaroo stays silver.

The field of the obverse is gilded too.

The obverse shows King Charles III in the portrait by Dan Thorne. The Perth Mint’s first coin with this portrait was a kangaroo coin, released on 15 January 2024.

Why Invest in Silver?

Silver coins have long been known as a store of value and investment product. Silver is in high demand in industry, particularly in electronics, solar technology, and medical technology. This industrial demand and limited availability make silver a stable and valuable investment. Furthermore, profits from the sale of silver are tax-free, provided the holding period is at least one year, making silver an attractive option for long-term investments.

Protection Against Inflation and Crises

Silver serves as an inflation hedge and retains its value when inflation rises. It can also serve as crisis protection, as it remains stable during times of economic uncertainty. Silver offers portfolio diversification and can serve as a long-term retirement provision to pass wealth from generation to generation.

Exclusive Packaging and Certificate of Authenticity

The 2 oz Silver Kangaroo Nugget 2024 is delivered in an elegant case that optimally protects and presents the coin. A numbered certificate of authenticity confirms the genuineness and the limited mintage of the coin, making it an even more valuable collector's item.

Take the opportunity to add this strictly limited and beautiful coin to your collection. The combination of silver and gold, the high mint quality, and the very low mintage make it a coveted object for collectors and investors alike. Secure this extraordinary piece now and benefit from its high appreciation potential.
