The elephant
The eldest knows the way.
Elephants live in families. A herd usually consists of related females and their young, led by the matriarch, as a rule the oldest and most experienced. She knows where to find food and water. When danger looms, the herd forms a ring, the young in the middle.
In a study published in 2001, researchers used playback experiments to show that the oldest female’s better ability to discriminate can influence the social knowledge of the whole group. Elephants can communicate through deep calls that lie partly below the range of human hearing and carry a long way.
The trunk is nose and upper lip at once. It lifts a log, and just as well a single piece of straw.

With the Silver Somalia Elephant Giant Moon Edition 2026, one of the most impressive kilo formats in the popular African Wildlife series comes onto the market. A full kilogram of fine silver, an imposing diameter of 100 millimetres and a colour-finished night-time motif – even at first glance it is clear that this is no ordinary investment piece. This edition is limited to just 100 pieces and is therefore a true rarity. Anyone looking for a rare collector's coin with character holds here a magnificent piece that is only very rarely found on the market in this form.
A design like a moonlit night in the savannah
The coloured coin design transports the viewer right into the African wilderness. At the centre stands a mighty African elephant with long, curved tusks at a watering hole, with a second, smaller elephant visible behind it. In the foreground, a zebra with its typical black-and-white stripes drinks from the reflective water. Above the scene towers a huge, silvery glowing full moon in a star-studded night sky – it is this very moon that gave this special edition its name, "Giant Moon Edition". Cool blue, silver and violet tones immerse the landscape in a mystical, almost magical atmosphere, with dark mountain silhouettes visible on the horizon. The inscription reads "AFRICAN WILDLIFE" at the top and "ELEPHANT" at the bottom, along with the designation "1 kg Ag 9999"; each piece also carries an individual serial number. Since the design of the series changes from year to year, each edition is a small work of art in its own right – one of the reasons why the series is so popular among collectors.
Fine silver with a fineness of 999.9 – material and finish
The coin consists of 1,000 g of pure silver with a high fineness of 999.9/1000. This means it meets the highest standards of purity and minting quality. With a diameter of 100 mm, it ranks among the true heavyweights of silver coins. The reeded edge and the dark-patinated, antique-looking surface underline the noble, high-value character of this kilogram piece. Silver is a durable precious metal that retains its physical properties over generations, has been used as a coinage metal for centuries, and is equally valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike. The coin is delivered Brilliant Uncirculated as brand-new merchandise in a high-quality case, including the matching, numbered certificate of authenticity of the Giant Moon Edition.
Minting, origin and face value
This edition is produced by the renowned mint Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt – the African Wildlife series is among the best-known products of this German mint with a long tradition. The issuing country is the Republic of Somalia; as an agency issue under Somali licence, the coin has official legal tender status. The value side shows the Somali national emblem with two rearing leopards, a shield bearing an inner star, as well as crossed spears and palm fronds. The emblem is framed by the country designation "SOMALI REPUBLIC", the year of issue 2026 and the face value of 2,000 shillings.
Why this limited collector's coin is so sought after
The decisive appeal lies in the combination of the magnificent kilo format and the mintage of only 100 pieces. This strict limitation makes the edition a sought-after collector's coin with high appreciation potential – earlier elephant vintages have at times achieved considerable premiums on the collector's market. Beyond its pure collector's value, silver embodies an intrinsic, tangible value and traditionally also serves as an inflation hedge as well as crisis protection. There is also a tax advantage: profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
One kilogram of fine silver, a glowing full moon over the savannah and a worldwide limitation to just 100 pieces – the Somalia Elephant Giant Moon 2026 combines artistic design and exceptional rarity into a true highlight for any collection.
