Year of the Goat 2027: six coins, two precious metals, one year of issue

A new animal from the Chinese zodiac every year – that's what has driven the Perth Mint's Lunar Series for decades. In 2027, it's the Goat's turn. With this investment set, you bring home the bullion issues of the year all in one go: four silver coins ranging from 1/2 to 5 ounces and two small gold coins of 1/20 and 1/10 ounce, all from the Australian Lunar Series III. Together, the set weighs in at 269.05 grams of precious metal.

What's included in the set

  • 1/2 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – 15.55 g fine silver, face value 50 cents
  • 1 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – 31.10 g fine silver, face value 1 dollar, maximum mintage of 300,000 pieces
  • 2 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – 62.21 g fine silver, face value 2 dollars
  • 5 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – 155.52 g fine silver, face value 8 dollars
  • 1/20 oz Gold Lunar III Goat 2027 – 1.56 g fine gold, face value 5 dollars
  • 1/10 oz Gold Lunar III Goat 2027 – 3.11 g fine gold, face value 15 dollars

In total, that comes to 264.38 g of fine silver and 4.67 g of fine gold. The Perth Mint strikes both metals at a fineness of 999.9/1000. Each of the silver and gold coins is official legal tender in Australia.

"Three Goats Bring Happiness" – the silver design

On the four silver coins, designer Natasha Muhl depicts an entire family: an adult goat lying relaxed in the foreground, a young animal perched on a rock, and a playful kid. The image draws on an old Chinese formula for good fortune. Three goats symbolize the end of winter, the beginning of spring, and a promising new start. To the right, a blossoming plum branch extends into the scene – a symbol of purity, resilience, and hope. Above are the Chinese character for goat, the inscription "GOAT 2027," and the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint.

One detail is only revealed under a magnifying glass. According to the Perth Mint, the silver design incorporates a micro-engraved security feature in the shape of a letter, designed to make counterfeiting significantly more difficult.

The gold coins: a goat, alone on the mountain

For the gold issues, the Perth Mint chose its own design. Wade Robinson depicts a single long-haired goat standing proudly on a plateau, surrounded by rugged terrain and a lone tree. It's precisely this contrast that gives the set its appeal. Silver tells a story of family happiness, gold of steadfastness – and with this set, you unite both interpretations of the goat in a single collection.

The value side featuring King Charles III

All six coins carry the obverse portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. Also featured are the inscription "AUSTRALIA," the weight, fineness, and respective face value.

Perth Mint and the Australian Lunar tradition

The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint and today belongs to the state of Western Australia. Its first Lunar Series launched in 1996. The current Lunar Series III began in 2020 with the Mouse, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, and in 2026 the Horse. The Goat is thus the eighth design in the twelve-year cycle. The 2027 bullion program was officially unveiled on September 8, 2026.

In Chinese horoscope tradition, people born in the Year of the Goat – such as 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, and now 2027 – are considered gentle, creative, and compassionate. A lovely occasion to give this set to someone dear to you.

Set, single coin, or bar? Comparing the advantages

Classics like the Maple Leaf or Krugerrand feature the same design every year. This keeps the premium low but offers collectors little variety. A silver bar also scores points with a low premium, but is not legal tender and lacks any numismatic appeal. The Australian Lunar coins, by contrast, combine pure material value with a design that changes each year and is in demand worldwide. Admittedly, small gold denominations like 1/20 and 1/10 oz cost somewhat more premium per gram than a full ounce. In return, you gain noticeably more flexibility.

  • Finely tiered: Six weight denominations make it possible to sell individual coins later on, exactly as needed.
  • Two metals: Silver and gold complement each other in one package, saving you the trouble of sourcing each coin separately.
  • Collector's value: A complete cross-section of the year in bullion quality, with distinct designs for gold and silver.
  • Trust: High fineness of 999.9 and origin from a state mint of global renown.
  • Gift idea: Ideal for births, anniversaries, or anyone born under the sign of the Goat.

Anyone looking to buy the Lunar Goat and unable to choose between silver and gold will find the most elegant answer to that question in this set.

Preserving value with a millennia-old tradition

Gold is humanity's oldest currency. It has outlived every paper currency that ever sought to replace it.

Precious metals do not depend on the payment promises of third parties and have been regarded for generations as protection against inflation and crises. With this set, you invest a tangible portion of your wealth in silver and gold – while also holding a small piece of Chinese cultural history in your hands. For investors, it's a solid building block; for collectors, the 2027 vintage in its finest form.
