The animal of the year

A design by Natasha Muhl

The Perth Mint describes a mature goat, a young goat and a baby goat.

The year’s gold coin bears a different image, designed by Wade Robinson: a single goat on a mountain plain.

The image draws on the phrase “Three Goats Bring Bliss”, which according to The Perth Mint stands for the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

The character 羊

At the top centre are the Chinese character for goat and GOAT 2027, on the left the P of The Perth Mint.

The Year of the Goat begins on 6 February 2027.

The series

One animal a year since 1996

In 1996 The Perth Mint became the first mint to release an Australian lunar programme, as it states. Each series follows the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Lunar I from 1996 to 2007, Lunar II from 2008 to 2019, Lunar III from 2020 to 2031.

Each year one animal is added, and the snake, the horse and the goat each have separate designs for gold and silver. The snake is the sixth animal of Lunar III, the horse the seventh, the goat the eighth.

Since the snake of 2025, the effigy side has shown King Charles III, portrayed by Dan Thorne.

The mint

The P of Perth

The Perth Mint was founded in a gold rush. In 1892 a find near Coolgardie set off Australia’s second great gold rush of the 19th century. Premier Sir John Forrest did not want the gold to leave Western Australia for processing and secured a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth.

On 20 June 1899 the first gold was processed and struck there, and The Perth Mint has operated continuously on the same site in East Perth ever since. The sovereigns from Perth carried a small P above the date.

The designs of the snake, the horse and the goat also bear a P, as The Perth Mint’s mintmark. Today it is owned by the State of Western Australia.

5 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – a heavyweight from the Perth Mint

Five ounces of solid silver, 60.60 millimetres in diameter, 155.52 grams of pure precious metal in your hand: this issue from the Lunar Series III feels different from an ordinary one-ounce coin the moment you pick it up. It is dedicated to the eighth animal of the Chinese lunar calendar – the Goat. It is struck in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality and delivered in a protective coin capsule.

  • Investment objective: a bullion coin for wealth preservation, inflation hedging, and tangible crisis protection in your own portfolio.
  • Design: three goats grazing, a plum blossom branch, a Chinese character, the inscription “GOAT 2027”, and the famous “P” mint mark.
  • Material & fineness: fine silver at 999.9/1,000 – investment-grade quality without compromise, 155.52 g fine weight.
  • Manufacturer: Perth Mint, one of the most renowned mints in the world.
  • Country of origin: Australia, legal tender with a face value of 8 AUD.

“Three Goats Bring Bliss” – the design in detail

The obverse shows a fully grown goat, a young goat, and a kid in a peaceful landscape. The image evokes the auspicious saying “Three Goats Bring Bliss” – a symbol for the end of winter, the beginning of spring, and a successful new start. The scene is complemented by a plum blossom tree, representing purity, resilience, and hope. On the reverse, King Charles III is depicted in profile facing left, surrounded by the inscriptions “CHARLES III”, “AUSTRALIA”, “5oz 9999 Ag”, and “8 DOLLARS”. According to tradition, those born in the Year of the Goat – 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979 – are considered gentle, creative, and compassionate.

The Lunar Series III at a glance

The third Silver Lunar series began in 2020 with the Mouse and has since worked its way through the zodiac year by year: Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse – and now the Goat. It is precisely this systematic structure that makes the series so appealing. Once you start a series, you keep collecting. The coins are issued in gold and silver, ranging from a tenth of an ounce up to kilo bar format, allowing gold coins and silver issues from the same year of issue to be combined.

There is no fixed mintage limit for the 5 oz size. Production is scheduled to end by the close of 2027, after which the Perth Mint will announce the actual number of coins minted. With previous years of issue, it was precisely the larger formats that later turned out to have had comparatively low mintages – a detail collectors keep an eye on.

Why five ounces of all sizes?

  • Lower premium per ounce than with smaller denominations – you get more metal for the minting effort involved.
  • Visual impact: at 60.60 mm, the relief achieves a depth that the 1 oz issue simply cannot match.
  • Convenient storage: a single 5 oz coin replaces five individual pieces and saves space in the safe.
  • Collector's bonus: large Lunar formats are traditionally harder to find on the secondary market than the standard 1 oz issues.

The drawback of larger denominations is obvious: they cannot be divided. Those who want to trade flexibly therefore often supplement the 5 oz Goat with smaller silver coins. Together, both create a well-balanced structure of substance and divisibility.

Silver: an industrial metal and a monetary metal at once

Silver has been minted, hoarded, and accepted as a means of payment for thousands of years. Unlike paper money, whose value depends on trust in governments, silver carries its value within itself. Then there is its industrial side: electronics, photovoltaics, and medical technology consume the metal continuously, while supply remains geologically limited. This dual role sets silver apart from every other monetary metal.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency – silver was the everyday money of centuries past. Both have outlasted every paper money system.

There is also a tax aspect: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free provided at least one year has passed between purchase and sale. Physical metal is also liquid at all times and can be sold worldwide – an argument that carries particular weight when the goal is securing wealth across generations for the long term. The 5 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 combines all of this with the charm of a series that has accompanied collectors for years.
