Thirty-three. There is no more. With a mintage of just 33 pieces, the 2 oz Deutsche Mark Red Ruby Edition 2026 is one of the most exclusive variants in Kettner Edelmetalle's entire Deutsche Mark series. It is a true rarity that won't be offered twice. Anyone who remembers the D-Mark jingling in their coat pocket will instantly recognise the design. What's new is its appearance: sparkling black, shining gold, and accented with a red detail that magically draws the eye.

The one that passed through our hands for half a century

On 20 June 1948, the history of the Deutsche Mark began with the currency reform – everyone received 40 D-Marks of "starting money" at the time. The new currency received its most famous face a little later: on 18 December 1950, the one-mark coin was issued, designed by Munich artist Josef Bernhart. Oak leaves on one side, the federal eagle on the other – two of Germany's most familiar symbols. The design remained virtually unchanged until the D-Mark's farewell on 1 January 2002 and became synonymous with stability and trust. Even the Bundesbank's golden farewell mark from 2001 took up this very motif.

Now, this very icon returns. Not as a copper-nickel coin for everyday use, but as a large-format collector's issue with an impressive 55 mm diameter.

Iced out meets ruby red: the design in detail

On the value side, the large, gold-plated number one sits at the centre, flanked by two finely detailed oak branches with acorns. Below it are the inscriptions "DEUTSCHE MARK" and "2026", surrounded by a golden beaded border. The background is finished in an iced-out style: deep black, scattered with glittering points of light reminiscent of a starry sky. To the left of the number one sits a ruby-red stone – the very detail that gives the Red Ruby Edition its name.

The reverse belongs to the eagle. With wings spread wide, every feather sculpted in detail, it presents itself in radiant gold. On its wings are the face value of 25 Dollars and "Republic of Liberia"; the inscription "2 OUNCES 9999 FINE SILVER" runs above, and "DEUTSCHE MARK" below.

The D-Mark is history. Its image in fine silver, gold and ruby red remains – for you and for all those to whom you one day pass it on.

Why 33 pieces make all the difference

The Deutsche Mark Edition 2026 is available in several versions, as both silver and gold coins – including the gold-plated 2 oz variant in Proof quality with 100 pieces or the Reverse Proof issue with 250 pieces. The Red Ruby Edition undercuts both significantly. This very low mintage is the core of its appeal: with so few pieces, a broad base of collectors meets a tiny supply.

An honest comparison is in order. Classic bullion coins such as Maple Leaf or Vienna Philharmonic are minted in the millions and closely track pure material value. Those seeking metal weight alone are well served there. Those who, however, wish to combine rarity, fine craftsmanship and German monetary history in a single piece will find something in this collector's coin that no bullion product can offer.

The advantages at a glance

  • Large format with 55 mm diameter and 62.21 g of fine silver
  • Elaborate gold plating, iced-out finish and ruby-red stone setting
  • Iconic D-Mark design based on the one-mark coin by Josef Bernhart
  • Official face value of 25 Dollars from the Republic of Liberia
  • Delivered in an elegant black case

Important for collectors: this is a proprietary issue by Kettner Edelmetalle, not an official issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank. The issuing country is Liberia – hence the face value in Dollars.

Fine silver with a tradition spanning millennia

Among all silver coins, this issue holds a special place. Yet its foundation remains the same metal that has served as money, a store of value, and a symbol of prosperity for thousands of years. Silver is durable and retains its properties across generations. It is traded worldwide as a commodity, is highly liquid, and is indispensable in electronics, solar technology and medical devices. Many also value it as an inflation hedge and for crisis protection – though with this edition, collector value is clearly the main focus.

A tax advantage: profits from the sale of physical silver in Germany are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. For collectors who think in terms of generations and wish to pass on their treasures one day, this is a welcome aspect.

A piece of D-Mark history for the few

The limitation to 33 pieces makes each and every one of these coins something special within a small circle. As a gift for a birthday, anniversary or retirement, it evokes memories of starting money, the economic miracle and childhood piggy banks. Within your own collection, it becomes a sparkling highlight. Secure one of the few remaining pieces of this strictly limited edition before the last coin finds its owner.
