Some designs simply touch the heart. The guardian angel is one of them, for centuries it has stood for security and care, for a hand watching over us. In 2026, Kettner Edelmetalle dedicated its own minting to this symbol. The version presented here is the most extraordinary of them all: at 65 millimeters in diameter, the design has as much space as rarely seen on an ounce coin. Anyone familiar with silver coins knows that an ounce usually measures around 40 millimeters. Here, feathers, folds and reflections of light appear larger, clearer and more vivid.

Two Angels, Two Sides: the Design in Detail

The obverse shows the guardian angel in a reverent pose. His hands are folded in prayer and his eyes are lowered. In his curly hair he wears a delicate wreath of blossoms, and behind his head a finely radiating halo shines. And then those wings! Spread wide, they fill almost the entire coin field, every feather worked out in relief. At the top edge it reads "1 OZ FINE SILVER 9999".

On the reverse, the angel is in motion. Barefoot and with arms slightly open, he floats through the image, his floor-length robe with its ornate hem billowing. On the left wing, the national coat of arms and the inscription "Republic of Liberia" are subtly incorporated, while on the left side of the field are the face value "20 DOLLARS" and the year of issue "2026". So on one side the silent prayer, on the other the angel setting out on his way.

Why Proof and 65 mm Go So Well Together

With the Proof minting quality, mirrored backgrounds and frosted, raised reliefs are created. This contrast is what makes the angels appear so three-dimensional: against the dark-looking mirrored field, the bright wings seem to literally step out of the coin. On the large surface of 65 mm, this effect comes across even more strongly.

A note for collectors: because 31.1 g of fine silver is spread over a significantly larger diameter, the coin is flatter than a classic ounce coin. The coin capsule protects the sensitive mirrored surface from fingerprints and scratches. It is therefore best to leave the coin inside it.

A Rarity Within the Guardian Angel Family

The 2026 Guardian Angel design is available at Kettner Edelmetalle in several versions. The classic 1 troy ounce version with a 40 mm diameter was issued in 5,000 pieces, the 1/2 ounce in 2,000 pieces. The 65 mm variant, on the other hand, has a mintage of only 500 pieces, making it ten times rarer than the 40 mm edition. Due to this very low mintage, it is a true rarity within the range and quickly becomes the centerpiece of any thematic angel collection.

The large-format version offers more surface area, more detail and more impact in the display case. The 40 mm edition, on the other hand, has the familiar standard format that fits into common coin albums. Those who love the design often collect both.

Compared to well-known Proof series such as the Australian Kookaburra, something stands out: there, the interest of many collectors is focused on a changing animal motif in a fixed format. The guardian angel, on the other hand, also appeals to people for whom the symbolism is particularly important. This brings many additional enthusiasts to join the classic numismatists. The strict limitation gives the coin additional appeal.

The scarcer a minting, the more coveted it becomes among collectors, especially when a timeless design meets the highest minting quality.

Silver, the Metal of Coins for Millennia

For centuries, silver was a monetary metal, a medium of trade and a symbol of prosperity. It is durable, retains its properties over generations and is traded worldwide. At the same time, demand from industry is rising, for example for electronics, solar and medical technology, while supply remains limited. Many buyers also value silver as a building block for inflation hedging and crisis protection. With the Guardian Angel, however, the collector's value is clearly in the foreground.

Good to know: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. As a lasting heirloom, such a coin can also wonderfully be passed on to the next generation.

A Gift with Meaning

Whether for a birth, baptism, communion or confirmation, or as a good-luck charm for a new stage of life: a guardian angel made of fine silver is a gift that lasts. Because each of these coins belongs to a strictly limited series, it is more than just a keepsake. It is a genuine collector's piece with its own story.
