Rentenmark and Reichsmark

From the Rentenmark to the Reichsmark

In the autumn of 1923 the Rentenbank was founded. Its Rentenbank notes were issued in a new money:

“The unit of value of these Rentenbank notes is the Rentenmark, which is divided into 100 Rentenpfennig.”

Decree on the founding of the Deutsche Rentenbank, 15 October 1923

That is where the name on our strikes in the oak wreath comes from.

  1. 15 October 1923

Decree on the founding of the Rentenbank.

  2. 8 November 1923

    A decree allows coins of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 Rentenpfennig.

  3. 30 August 1924

The coinage act introduces the Reichsmark.

  4. October 1924

The Reichsbank issues the Reichsmark alongside the Rentenmark, one to one.

  5. June 1948

The Deutsche Mark replaces the Reichsmark.

How the mark came about: the gold of the German Empire

1 Troy Ounce Silver "100 Years of Reichsmark" 2025 – Antique Finish with a Mintage of Only 250 Pieces

  • Strictly limited: Very low mintage of only 250 pieces worldwide – each specimen accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with individual numbering.
  • Growth opportunities: High value appreciation potential due to the strict limitation and the continued strong demand for German commemorative coins with historical relevance.
  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin, which in this Antique Finish design rarely appears on the market.
  • Investment goal: Collector's item with numismatic appeal, where the rarity clearly elevates the collector's value above the pure material value.
  • Design: A bold oak leaf wreath with crossed acorns frames the large "1" and the year 2025 along with the privy mark; the reverse belongs to the crowned imperial eagle.
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle
  • Country of origin: Germany – the issuing country is Liberia, the face value is 20 Dollars.
  • Key data: 1 troy ounce fine silver 999.9/1,000, fine weight 31.1 g, diameter 40.00 mm, delivered in a case.

A century of monetary history, condensed into a single ounce: This collector's coin made of the finest silver commemorates the introduction of the Reichsmark 100 years ago. And it does so in a way that connoisseurs will recognize immediately: not a mirror-like high gloss, but a deliberately aged-looking Antique Finish that lends the coin the aura of a historical witness.

The Design: Oak Leaves, Imperial Eagle and a Special Privy Mark

The obverse features a sculpturally executed oak leaf wreath with two crossed acorns at the lower edge. It frames the large "1", the lettering "Reichsmark" in blackletter script, and the year 2025. Right next to it sits the privy mark, referencing 1925 and the anniversary – a small detail that gives this edition its name. For centuries, oak leaves have been a German symbol of steadfastness and durability, and this visual language fits perfectly with the metal: silver endures.

The reverse belongs to the imperial eagle. Crowned, with widely spread wings, its plumage rendered down to the individual feather, with oak leaves below and the small coat of arms of the issuing country. Around the rim reads "1 UNZE 9999 FEINSILBER" as well as the face value "20 DOLLARS". The Antique Finish darkens the recesses, making the beaded circle, leaf veins, and plumage stand out distinctly from the surface. Anyone holding this piece gets the impression of holding an original coin cherished for decades.

100 Years of Reichsmark – The History Behind the Coin

After the hyperinflation of the early 1920s, Germany urgently needed a stable currency. With the Coinage Act of August 30, 1924, the Reichsmark was introduced as legal tender, and the first Reich silver coins entered circulation starting in 1925. The 1-Mark circulation coin of that time bore exactly the design that this new interpretation revisits: the denomination within an oak wreath on one side, the eagle on the other. However, one clear difference favors the modern edition – the historical pieces were made of a 500 alloy with copper, whereas here you hold a full ounce with 999.9 fineness in your hands.

Why Collectors Choose Strictly Limited Silver Coins

Silver has a millennia-old tradition as a coinage metal and was regarded in many cultures as a sign of wealth and prestige. It is durable, retains its physical properties across generations, and carries intrinsic value through its industrial use in electronics, solar, and medical technology. Unlike fiat money, which rests solely on trust in institutions, physical metal possesses intrinsic value. With silver coins in extremely low mintages, a second factor comes into play: numismatics. Where only 250 specimens exist, it is not the silver price alone that determines value, but rarity.

In the collector's market, small mintages are the hardest currency: once sold out, it cannot be re-minted.

Practical for collectors: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided the minimum holding period of one year is observed. And because silver is traded worldwide as a commodity, it remains readily tradable at all times. Anyone who views physical metal as a building block for inflation hedge or crisis protection anyway also gains a piece of contemporary history for the display case.

Comparison: Antique Finish or Proof?

The same design is also available in a Proof version with 1,925 specimens – a charming nod to the anniversary year. The Proof finish shines with a mirror-like polish and appears festive. This variant takes the opposite approach: the Antique Finish emphasizes the reliefs more strongly and gives the coin a historical, almost excavated appearance. However, the number behind it is decisive. With a mintage of only 250 pieces, it ranks among the true rarities of German commemorative coinage. Common bullion coins such as Maple Leaf or Krugerrand, by contrast, are produced in the millions – there, only the weight matters, whereas here it is the very low mintage.

A collector's item for everyone who wants to make monetary history tangible: neatly presented in a case, numbered, and unrepeatable in this form.
