Australia · Wedge-tailed Eagle

The eagle with the wedge-shaped tail

Its tail is long and wedge-shaped, its legs are feathered down to the toes.

It lives across the whole Australian mainland, on Tasmania and in southern New Guinea, from the coast to the mountains. Of the world’s large eagles it is the most common.

Its nest of dead branches is used for years; nests 1.8 metres wide, 3 metres deep and weighing about 400 kilograms are known.

✔ Der australische Keilschwanzadler 

Auf der Motivseite dieser Silbermünze ist ein australischer Keilschwanzadler abgebildet. Nach einem langen und anstrengenden Flug ist der große Vogel auf einem Ast gelandet und möchte sich nun ausruhen. Die Flügel sind noch ausgebreitet, denn er ist gerade erst gelandet. Er sieht zufrieden und glücklich aus und freut sich darauf, erst einmal zur Ruhe kommen zu können. Von dem Ast aus hat er auch einen herrlichen Ausblick, falls Gefahren lauern oder er später Hunger bekommt und eine Maus fangen möchte. 

Keilschwanzadler sind in fast ganz Australien zuhause. Sie können bis zu 106 Zentimeter groß werden und ihre Flügelspannweite kann bis zu 2,32 Meter betragen. Damit ist er eine der größten Adler-Arten überhaupt. Ausgewachsene Keilschwanzadler sind fast vollkommen schwarz. Im Gefieder des Nackens und des Hinterkopf kommt ein wenig Braun und Rot vor. Keilschwanzadler bewohnen Wüsten, Savannen, Bergwälder und jegliche Landschaftsgebiete, die der faszinierende Kontinent Australien zu bieten hat. Keilschwanzadler ernähren sich von Säugetieren, Reptilien und Vögeln. Der Ruf des Keilschwanzadlers ist außergewöhnlich und ein starkes Erkennungszeichen. Es hört sich ein wenig wie ein Pfeifen an. Sie können aber auch Rufe erzeugen, die jaulend oder kläffend klingen. Damit möchten sie Feinde vertreiben. Allerdings sind Keilschwanzadler in der Regel sehr stille und ruhige Vögel. Die Laute sind meist nur dann zu hören, wenn sich der Vogel am Nest oder im Balzflug befindet.
