Deutsche Mark · 2026 Edition

The coin that passed through our hands for half a century. When memory turns to gold.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche MarkReverse with the eagle

You are looking at the value side.

It jingled in coat pockets, lay on shop counters and in piggy banks. The One between the oak twigs went through millions of hands until the farewell of the D-Mark. Now its image returns as a homage, struck in fine gold.

  • Mintage 5,000 pieces
  • Proof
  • 0.16 g

It was never just money. It was a promise.

On 20 June 1948, every resident of the three western zones exchanged 40 Reichsmarks for 40 D-Marks, the “Kopfgeld” or per-head quota. The very next day, shop windows were full to bursting. The new currency set off the economic miracle.

In the Bundesbank’s words, the D-Mark enjoyed trust from its first day and kept it to the very end. Over five decades it also became an international symbol of stable money.

12 billion

Some never fully let go of it: according to the Bundesbank, around twelve billion D-Marks have still not been exchanged, more than half of them in coins.

From the Kopfgeld to the farewell

Half a century of the Mark

  1. 1948

    A new beginning

On 20 June the currency reform takes effect. From the next day, the Deutsche Mark is the only legal tender in the three western zones.

  2. 1950

The One with the oak leaves

At the end of 1950 the one-mark coin enters circulation, designed by Josef Bernhart of Munich. Its motif remains unchanged until the farewell of the D-Mark.

  3. 1951

    The Heiermann

Albert Holl’s silver five-mark coin is struck for the first time and circulates from May 1952. It remains the only circulation coin of the Federal Republic made of silver.

  4. 1957

    The Bundesbank

On 1 August the Deutsche Bundesbank takes over from the Bank deutscher Länder, which had issued the first D-Marks in 1948.

  5. 1990

    One Mark for everyone

“If the D-Mark comes, we stay. If it doesn’t, we’ll go to it” was a slogan at the Monday demonstrations. On 1 July 1990 it came to the GDR, even before German reunification.

  6. 2001

    The farewell

In farewell, the Deutsche Bundesbank issues the One as a gold coin, one million pieces in fine gold. Since 1 January 2002 Germans have paid in euros.

The motif

An image everyone knows

The value side follows the one-mark coin of the past. Anyone who once held the Mark recognises it at once.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche Mark
Reverse with the eagle
The large One
Clear and unadorned, it stands in the centre, just as on the one-mark coin designed by the Munich artist Josef Bernhart.
Two oak twigs
To the left and right, two oak twigs with acorns frame the numeral. Oak leaves already graced the pfennig coins, and the German 1, 2 and 5 cent coins still show them today.
The eagle
On the other side the eagle spreads its wings, worked down to the last feather. The wings carry the face value and Republic of Liberia in small letters.

The finish

Two ways to catch the light

Your coinProof

Proof

The field shines deep like a mirror, the motif lies on it in matte relief. With this finish, dies and blanks are specially polished and the blanks are fed into the press one by one.

Reverse Proof

Here it is the other way round: the field is frosted, the motif gleams like a mirror. Every leaf vein and every feather catches the light.

Some things pass.

The memory remains.

The D-Mark is history. Its image in precious metal remains, for you and for those you will one day pass it on to.

5,000

pieces in the edition

0.16 g fine gold · 999,9/1.000 · 14 mm · Proof · Coincard

An own edition by Kettner Edelmetalle, not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank. The issuing country is the Republic of Liberia, hence the face value in dollars.

1/200 oz Gold Deutsche Mark 2026 – German monetary history in the purest fine gold

Hardly any currency is as deeply linked to trust, stability, and prosperity as the Deutsche Mark. The 1/200 oz Gold Deutsche Mark 2026 brings this legacy back to life – not merely as a memory, but as a tangible, physical gold investment of the highest minting quality.

  • Minting quality: Struck in the highest finishing grade, Proof (PP) – mirror-like fields meet raised, crisply detailed relief.
  • Strictly limited: A worldwide mintage limit of just 5,000 pieces – a modest mintage that makes this 2026-dated coin a sought-after rarity.
  • Genuine investment gold: pure gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – a tangible asset whose value lies in the metal itself and tracks the gold price.
  • Value-oriented & liquid: physical fine gold in a handy coin card – tradable worldwide, highly liquid, and resellable at any time.
  • Design: the iconic numeral "1", framed by two symmetrical oak leaf branches with acorns; on the reverse, the majestic eagle – a design that directly evokes the historic 1-DM gold mark.
  • Material & fineness: 0.16 g of purest fine gold, struck from 999.9 gold – the highest purity grade commonly available on the market.
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle, one of the largest and most renowned precious metals dealers in Germany.
  • Country of origin: Germany – issued as official legal tender of the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 25 Dollars.

A design straight from memory – the classic D-Mark in gold

The obverse features the large, raised numeral "1", flanked by two artfully arranged oak branches with finely detailed acorns. The left branch stands out against a deep black background, its counterpart set against a gleaming gold surface – a contrast that lends the small coin remarkable depth. Below, the inscription "DEUTSCHE MARK" and the year "2026" are struck, enclosed by a fine beaded border; the reeded edge rounds off the classic coin character. The reverse presents the eagle with widely spread wings and finely detailed feathers, while the inscription "1/200 OZ 9999 FEINGOLD" confirms the purity. The design provides the personal, emotional touch – yet the true substance and reason for purchase remains the fine gold it contains.

Strictly limited Proof minting

The issue is limited worldwide to 5,000 pieces. This clearly defined mintage creates a natural scarcity which, based on experience, can support the desirability of such a coin – without this implying any promise regarding future prices. Struck in Proof, the most demanding finishing grade in the art of minting, mirror-polished surfaces contrast with matte, raised design elements to create a three-dimensional overall image. Within our range, this coin is listed among the collector's coins with very low mintages – yet at its core, it remains fully-fledged physical investment gold.

Genuine investment gold – preserving value in physical form

Gold is humanity's oldest currency and has served as a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never been worth zero, possesses an intrinsic, globally recognized value, and can be exchanged for cash at any time. That is precisely why, despite the emotional design, what you are acquiring here is fully-fledged investment gold: minted fine gold whose value tracks the price of gold. Small quantities of gold like this 1/200 oz of fine gold add up over the years to substantial wealth and are excellently suited for building up physical gold holdings step by step. As a building block within a broadly diversified precious metals portfolio, inflation protection through gold contributes to wealth preservation, and in turbulent times, many investors equally value physical precious metal as a crisis hedge.

Small, yet fully-fledged – a direct comparison

At 1/200 oz, this coin ranks among the smallest gold units available. Compared to large classics such as a 1-ounce coin, the capital outlay is remarkably low – ideal for entering into physical gold investment. And unlike a plain 1/200 oz gold bar, the Deutsche Mark 2026 combines pure material value with an elaborately designed motif, refined Proof finishing, and a tightly limited worldwide mintage. You can find further issues of this kind in our gold coins category.

Give the gift of genuine investment gold – for a birthday, a christening, or as a foundation for long-term wealth building. What remains is the timeless brilliance of pure fine gold.
