40 Years of Top Gun – 1 g Fine Gold in Minted Bar Format from the Perth Mint

  • Strictly limited: Only 5,000 pieces will be produced worldwide. The official mintage of 5,000 pieces was set by the mint itself.
  • Investment purpose: One gram of pure gold is a solid building block that lets you effectively protect your savings against the creeping devaluation of money.
  • Preservation of value: Like every solid gold bar, this minted bar serves as a timeless store of value and preserves the true purchasing power of your wealth.
  • Protection: Rising prices, fears of recession, record levels of government debt: with physical fine gold, your wealth rests on a foundation that no central bank can arbitrarily multiply.
  • Crisis protection: The small 1-gram denomination in particular is excellently suited as a medium of exchange and payment in an emergency. It can be finely dosed and is recognisable as gold everywhere.
  • Design: The legendary Top Gun logo with wings and star rises above a three-dimensionally worked cloud backdrop, beneath which the lettering "40 YEARS" appears.
  • Material & fineness: Struck from fine gold with 999.9/1,000 purity. On the value side, this is stamped as "1 GRAM 9999 Au".
  • Manufacturer: The Perth Mint, the traditional state-owned mint of Western Australia.
  • Country of origin: Manufactured in Australia, officially issued by the island nation of Tuvalu with a face value of 3 dollars.

Forty years after its cinema release, the Perth Mint celebrates one of the most iconic films of the eighties. The anniversary is captured in the most enduring material known to mankind. Unlike many classic collector's coins, whose price depends primarily on the interest of enthusiasts, the metal itself is clearly the focus here. The value of this minted bar is based primarily on the fine gold it contains and moves in line with the gold price. The design? A personal touch. The substance? One gram of pure gold.

Cinema legend meets fine gold: the design in detail

In May 1986, "Top Gun", directed by Tony Scott, hit cinema screens. Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, the unforgettable soundtrack: all of this became a permanent part of pop culture. For the anniversary year 2026, the Perth Mint has designed this officially licensed minted bar in partnership with Paramount Pictures. It is released as a limited edition within a small Top Gun series.

The design side shows the famous logo with its horizontally staggered wings and five-pointed star. Beneath it rises a relief-like, rugged cloud formation, out of which the lettering "40 YEARS" emerges. In the lower left corner sits the discreet "P", the mint mark of the Perth Mint. To the right of the star is the licensing notice "TM & © 2026 Par Pics".

The value side features the left-facing portrait of King Charles III. To the left and right, three stylised wing stripes each elegantly echo the logo. This is complemented by the inscriptions "KING CHARLES III TUVALU 2026" and "3 DOLLARS 1GRAM 9999 Au". You will receive the minted bar in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, securely packaged in a coincard with Top Gun design.

Investment gold instead of a souvenir: why one gram of fine gold counts

Despite the cinematic occasion, what you are acquiring here is full-fledged investment gold: minted fine gold whose value is tied to the gold price. This is not merely a memento of a blockbuster, but a physical asset that you can trade and sell worldwide at any time. Gold is highly liquid and can be converted into cash without complication whenever needed.

Minted bar: bar shape with coin status

Bars bearing a coin stamp are called minted bars. At first glance, the rectangular piece looks like an ordinary small bar. However, due to the stamped face value of 3 Tuvalu dollars, it is classified in Germany as a coin – that is, as a gold coin in bar form. In the issuing country of Tuvalu, it is official legal tender. This means the minted bar combines the compact, easily stackable bar shape with the state legitimacy of a coin.

Behind the minting stands The Perth Mint of Australia. The mint was founded in 1899, belongs to the state of Western Australia, and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide among precious metals investors for precision and reliable fineness.

Preserving purchasing power – gram by gram

For over 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value. Even in ancient Egypt it was a unit of measure for trade. Later it kept the exchange of goods along the Silk Road running, and in the 19th and 20th centuries it formed the foundation of the gold standard: paper money could be redeemed at any time for a fixed amount of gold. The yellow metal has never had a value of zero. How could it? Its value is intrinsic and needs no government promise.

Fiat money, on the other hand, is created and controlled by central banks, and through inflation it regularly loses purchasing power. This is precisely where the inflation hedge provided by physical gold comes in: supply is scarce, and mining output is limited. Tellingly, it is the central banks themselves that are the world's largest holders of gold, keeping it as a reserve.

"Gold is money. Everything else is credit." – John Pierpont Morgan, 1912

Comparison: minted bar, 1g gold bar, or gold coins?

  • Compared to classic 1g gold bars: The gold content is the same, but with an official face value and an elaborately minted design added. Plain bars without a design, however, usually come with a slightly lower premium.
  • Compared to larger gold coins: Those who buy 1/10 oz or 1 oz pay a lower premium per gram. The 1g minted bar, on the other hand, scores with a low entry price and great flexibility if you only want to sell part of it.
  • Compared to the silver editions in the series: For the anniversary, two coloured 1-ounce silver coins are also being released, one of them in the shape of the logo. Gold, however, is the big brother of little silver and offers a significantly higher value density in a tiny space.

Give a genuine gold investment as a gift – for a 40th birthday, a christening, or Christmas

Anyone born in 1986 will be celebrating their own 40th birthday in 2026. This minted bar is a particularly fitting gift for the occasion. Don't give a trinket – give genuine investment gold! It is equally well suited as a christening gift or a Christmas present, as an introduction to physical gold investment. Small amounts of gold add up over the years to considerable wealth. As part of retirement provision, it can be passed down from generation to generation. Gold has shone for thousands of years and will not lose that shine in the future either.
