The Norn sits facing the viewer among threads and roots. She is named in the poem on the first pages of a book that came home to Iceland in 1971.

The names in our week

Three names we say every week.

Thursday, Friday and Wednesday still carry names from this world of gods. In German, Donnerstag and Freitag do too, formed on the model of the Roman week, but Mittwoch has lost its old name.

Merseburg · 10th century

Two charms, not found until 1841.

In the 10th century, two charms were written in an Old High German dialect on the front of a leaf. The manuscript is held in the cathedral chapter library in Merseburg.

In 1841 the historian Georg Waitz found the lines in the library of the cathedral chapter, and the following year Jacob Grimm called the manuscript a “treasure”.

According to the cathedral chapter, they are the only pagan incantations preserved in Germany and the only known Old High German record that shows figures of this world of gods in action: Wodan, Balder, Friia, Volla, Sunna, Phol and Sinhtgunt.

“Phol ende Uuodan uuorun zi holza.” Phol and Wodan made their way into the wood.
Second Merseburg Charm, translation after Eichner and Nedoma

Iceland · around 1220

A textbook for young poets.

Around 1220 the Icelander Snorri Sturluson, 1179 to 1241, wrote his Edda. According to Britannica, it was meant to teach young poets the difficult metres and to make the old material understandable to a Christian age.

Two of its parts are called Gylfaginning, “The Beguiling of Gylfi”, and Skáldskaparmál, “The Language of Poetry”. For his account of the gods, Snorri cites poems that also appear in the Codex Regius.

Codex Regius · 45 leaves

A book on which the poems depend.

A parchment book from the late 13th century, its scribe unknown. According to the Árni Magnússon Institute, it is the oldest and most important surviving collection of Eddic poems, and most of the poems exist nowhere else but here and in copies of it.

At the front stand the poems about the gods, headed by the Völuspá. Nothing is known of the book’s path until 1643, when Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson wrote his initials and the year into it; eight leaves were already missing.

In 1662 the bishop sent the book to King Frederick III in Copenhagen. It stayed there for more than three centuries.

Reykjavík · 21 April 1971

On 21 April 1971 the Danish naval ship “Vædderen” docked in Reykjavík. The harbour was crowded as naval officers carried ashore three parcels in brown paper, with the Codex Regius and the Flateyjarbók inside.

The books are back in Iceland and are kept in Reykjavík today. We say the names every week.

“Has the whole population ever gathered with enthusiasm to receive two books?”
Prime Minister Jóhann Hafstein on 21 April 1971, as quoted in Kristeligt Dagblad

Anyone searching for an extraordinary collector's coin that combines Norse mythology with modern minting artistry will find exactly what they're looking for in this issue. The 1 oz silver Goddess of Fate Werdanda 2026 from the Germania Mint's Norns series is far more than a precious metal product – it is a work of art that tells a story. Namely, the story of the present moment.

Werdanda: The Norn of the Present in Masterful Minting

The obverse of this impressive coin shows Werdanda – also known as Verdandi – as a graceful figure enthroned on a mighty root of the World Tree Yggdrasil. Her gaze is lowered, completely absorbed in the present moment. Her flowing hair falls in artfully braided strands reminiscent of the threads of fate spun by the Norns. She wears flowing robes and magical jewelry – every detail crafted by designer Kinga Sabatowicz with remarkable attention to detail. The scene is framed by delicate Celtic ornaments along the coin's edge, lending the piece additional depth. Above is the inscription "WERDANDA", and in the lower right the artist's initials "KS".

The reverse features the striking double-headed eagle of Germania Mint, surrounded by the intertwined roots of Yggdrasil and threads of fate. Broken threads symbolize the possibility of breaking free from the past and reshaping one's own destiny through conscious action in the present. The inscriptions "2026", "GERMANIA", "1 oz", "Ag 999.9" and "5 MARK" are clearly and elegantly integrated into the coin's design.

Werdanda means "that which is happening". As the Norn of the Present, she weaves fate in the here and now – a bridge between past and future. Her message: Every conscious decision shapes the future.

Mythological Background of the Norns Series

In Norse mythology, the three Norns – Urd (past), Werdanda (present), and Skuld (future) – are the guardians of fate. They sit at the foot of the World Tree Yggdrasil and weave the threads that determine the lives of all beings. Werdanda embodies the dynamics of life, activity, and the necessity of acting in the moment. This profound symbolism makes the coin not only a numismatic highlight but also a philosophical collector's item of lasting value.

Why This Collector's Coin Is So Special

Germania Mint has built an excellent reputation among collectors in recent years. Its mythological series – from the main Germania series to the Valkyries and now the Norns – regularly sell out quickly. This is due not only to the outstanding minting quality but also to the deliberately low mintages. With only 5,000 pieces worldwide, the Werdanda 2026 is a true rarity that should not be missing from any ambitious collection.

Silver has held a special position as a coinage metal for thousands of years. It has been valued by a wide variety of cultures as a symbol of wealth and prestige – and this very tradition lives on in the Werdanda coin. Silver also offers a decisive advantage over other precious metals: compared to gold, it is often more affordable, making it the ideal entry point into the world of high-quality numismatics for many collectors. Furthermore, profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided the holding period is at least one year – an aspect not to be underestimated for collectors with a long-term perspective.

Silver also possesses an intrinsic value supported by its diverse industrial applications – from electronics to solar technology to medicine. The limited availability of this precious metal ensures long-term value stability, which is especially valued as an inflation hedge and crisis protection in times of economic uncertainty.

Who Is This Coin Suitable For?

The 1 oz silver Goddess of Fate Werdanda 2026 is primarily aimed at passionate collectors seeking something special. Anyone following the Germania Mint's Norns series will consider this piece an indispensable addition. But newcomers drawn to the fascination of Norse mythology and the finest minting artistry will also find an outstanding entry point here. The limited mintage and the growing popularity of the Germania Mint series suggest considerable value appreciation potential – although this, of course, cannot be guaranteed.

Secure this extraordinary piece of minting artistry now, before the strictly limited edition sells out. For as Werdanda herself teaches us: the right moment to act is always now.
