The Norn stands with her hair loose among threads and roots. She is named in the poem on the first pages of a book that came home to Iceland in 1971.

The names in our week

Three names we say every week.

Thursday, Friday and Wednesday still carry names from this world of gods. In German, Donnerstag and Freitag do too, formed on the model of the Roman week, but Mittwoch has lost its old name.

Merseburg · 10th century

Two charms, not found until 1841.

In the 10th century, two charms were written in an Old High German dialect on the front of a leaf. The manuscript is held in the cathedral chapter library in Merseburg.

In 1841 the historian Georg Waitz found the lines in the library of the cathedral chapter, and the following year Jacob Grimm called the manuscript a “treasure”.

According to the cathedral chapter, they are the only pagan incantations preserved in Germany and the only known Old High German record that shows figures of this world of gods in action: Wodan, Balder, Friia, Volla, Sunna, Phol and Sinhtgunt.

“Phol ende Uuodan uuorun zi holza.” Phol and Wodan made their way into the wood.
Second Merseburg Charm, translation after Eichner and Nedoma

Iceland · around 1220

A textbook for young poets.

Around 1220 the Icelander Snorri Sturluson, 1179 to 1241, wrote his Edda. According to Britannica, it was meant to teach young poets the difficult metres and to make the old material understandable to a Christian age.

Two of its parts are called Gylfaginning, “The Beguiling of Gylfi”, and Skáldskaparmál, “The Language of Poetry”. For his account of the gods, Snorri cites poems that also appear in the Codex Regius.

Codex Regius · 45 leaves

A book on which the poems depend.

A parchment book from the late 13th century, its scribe unknown. According to the Árni Magnússon Institute, it is the oldest and most important surviving collection of Eddic poems, and most of the poems exist nowhere else but here and in copies of it.

At the front stand the poems about the gods, headed by the Völuspá. Nothing is known of the book’s path until 1643, when Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson wrote his initials and the year into it; eight leaves were already missing.

In 1662 the bishop sent the book to King Frederick III in Copenhagen. It stayed there for more than three centuries.

Reykjavík · 21 April 1971

On 21 April 1971 the Danish naval ship “Vædderen” docked in Reykjavík. The harbour was crowded as naval officers carried ashore three parcels in brown paper, with the Codex Regius and the Flateyjarbók inside.

The books are back in Iceland and are kept in Reykjavík today. We say the names every week.

“Has the whole population ever gathered with enthusiasm to receive two books?”
Prime Minister Jóhann Hafstein on 21 April 1971, as quoted in Kristeligt Dagblad

Anyone searching for a collector's coin that combines Norse mythology, craftsmanship perfection, and the timeless value of silver will find exactly that in the Goddess of Fate Urd. This 1-ounce coin from the sought-after Norns series by Germania Mint is far more than a precious metal product – it is a work of art that tells an ancient story.

Urd: The Eldest of the Norns and Her Timeless Wisdom

In Norse mythology, Urd – "that which has been" – stands as the eldest of the three goddesses of fate at the roots of the world tree Yggdrasil. She gazes into the waters of her sacred well, where the shadows of bygone days are reflected. Every action, every decision ever made flows to her like a stream of memories. From these threads she weaves fate and teaches us: the past is the foundation of the present – and quietly guides the future.

This very mystical power has been translated by designer Kinga Sabatowicz into a breathtaking coin design. On the obverse, Urd rises in flowing robes before the mighty roots of Yggdrasil. Her hands reach for the threads of fate, her gaze distant – blind to the obvious, yet seeing far beyond what mortal eyes can grasp. At the lower edge, one can make out the stone rim of the well, from which the waters of memory rise. A surrounding Celtic knotwork band artfully frames the scene.

The Reverse: Germania's Eagle in the Web of Fate

The value side shows the striking double-headed eagle of Germania Mint, surrounded by the flowing roots of Yggdrasil and threads of fate. Some of these threads are torn – a powerful symbol that although the past shapes fate, it is possible to break free from it and walk a new path. The inscriptions "2026", "GERMANIA", "1 oz", "Ag 999.9" and "5 MARK" are clearly and elegantly integrated into the relief.

"Urd weaves the threads of fate and teaches that the past forms the foundation of the present and quietly guides the future." – From Norse mythology

Minted to the Highest Fineness

What sets this coin apart from many other silver coins is the masterful relief work. Crafted from 31.10 grams of purest silver with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, this coin achieves the highest quality grade possible in silver minting. The diameter of 38.61 mm provides ample surface for the intricate details of the design.

Why This Coin Is So Special for Collectors

The Norns series by Germania Mint has, in a very short time, developed into one of the most sought-after mythological coin series. And for good reason: the combination of Norse legend, masterful minting artistry, and strict limitation makes every edition a coveted collector's piece. With a mintage of only 5,000 pieces worldwide, the Urd coin ranks among the rare rarities that experienced collectors immediately have on their radar.

  1. Limitation creates desirability: With only 5,000 pieces worldwide, demand naturally exceeds supply – a classic driver of value appreciation potential.
  2. Series effect: Anyone wishing to collect the complete Norns series will inevitably need the Urd edition as well. This further increases demand.
  3. Certificate of authenticity included: Each coin is delivered with an official Certificate of Authenticity from Germania Mint, confirming the limitation and specifications.
  4. Secure storage: Delivery takes place in a protective coin capsule – perfect for long-term preservation in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Silver as a Timeless Store of Value

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a medium of exchange, a precious metal for jewelry, and a store of value. Its intrinsic value stems not only from tradition but also from steadily growing industrial demand – from solar technology and electronics to medical technology. Anyone holding silver for at least one year also benefits in Germany from tax exemption on capital gains. A benefit not to be underestimated, which makes this exclusive collector's coin even more attractive.

Compared to pure bullion silver coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic, the Goddess of Fate Urd offers a decisive added value: beyond its pure material value, it holds considerable collector's value, supported by the low mintage, the artistic design, and its membership in the Norns series. While bullion coins are minted in the millions, only 5,000 specimens of the Urd exist worldwide.

Who Is This Coin Suitable For?

Whether a passionate collector of Norse mythology, a lover of Germania Mint series, or a silver enthusiast looking for something special – the Goddess of Fate Urd appeals to many target audiences. It is excellently suited as the centerpiece of a collection, as an extraordinary gift, or as a building block for long-term inflation hedge and crisis protection with collector's potential.

Secure your copy of this strictly limited silver coin now before the mintage sells out. For as Urd herself teaches us: what has passed does not return – and missed opportunities certainly do not either.
