Three men in high relief, the one in the middle with a gilded helmet, three ounces of silver in Proof. Most of the poems about the gods that later found their way onto parchment probably date from their time.

The names in our week

Three names we say every week.

Thursday, Friday and Wednesday still carry names from this world of gods. In German, Donnerstag and Freitag do too, formed on the model of the Roman week, but Mittwoch has lost its old name.

Merseburg · 10th century

Two charms, not found until 1841.

In the 10th century, two charms were written in an Old High German dialect on the front of a leaf. The manuscript is held in the cathedral chapter library in Merseburg.

In 1841 the historian Georg Waitz found the lines in the library of the cathedral chapter, and the following year Jacob Grimm called the manuscript a “treasure”.

According to the cathedral chapter, they are the only pagan incantations preserved in Germany and the only known Old High German record that shows figures of this world of gods in action: Wodan, Balder, Friia, Volla, Sunna, Phol and Sinhtgunt.

“Phol ende Uuodan uuorun zi holza.” Phol and Wodan made their way into the wood.
Second Merseburg Charm, translation after Eichner and Nedoma

Iceland · around 1220

A textbook for young poets.

Around 1220 the Icelander Snorri Sturluson, 1179 to 1241, wrote his Edda. According to Britannica, it was meant to teach young poets the difficult metres and to make the old material understandable to a Christian age.

Two of its parts are called Gylfaginning, “The Beguiling of Gylfi”, and Skáldskaparmál, “The Language of Poetry”. For his account of the gods, Snorri cites poems that also appear in the Codex Regius.

Codex Regius · 45 leaves

A book on which the poems depend.

A parchment book from the late 13th century, its scribe unknown. According to the Árni Magnússon Institute, it is the oldest and most important surviving collection of Eddic poems, and most of the poems exist nowhere else but here and in copies of it.

At the front stand the poems about the gods, headed by the Völuspá. Nothing is known of the book’s path until 1643, when Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson wrote his initials and the year into it; eight leaves were already missing.

In 1662 the bishop sent the book to King Frederick III in Copenhagen. It stayed there for more than three centuries.

Under the loupe

Three men in high relief.

The man in the middle wears a gilded helmet and carries a sword with a gilded hilt, with two bearded men to the left and right. The back shows a longship with sail and shields, together with a medallion bearing the portrait of Charles III.

Reykjavík · 21 April 1971

On 21 April 1971 the Danish naval ship “Vædderen” docked in Reykjavík. The harbour was crowded as naval officers carried ashore three parcels in brown paper, with the Codex Regius and the Flateyjarbók inside.

The books are back in Iceland and are kept in Reykjavík today. We say the names every week.

“Has the whole population ever gathered with enthusiasm to receive two books?”
Prime Minister Jóhann Hafstein on 21 April 1971, as quoted in Kristeligt Dagblad

As the sixth and final issue of the legendary "Legends" series, this numismatic masterpiece combines the highest minting artistry with fascinating Viking history. The very low mintage makes this coin a true rarity that should not be missing from any discerning collection.

Nordic Warrior Legends Immortalised in Pure Silver

The obverse of this impressive 3-ounce coin transports you directly into the rugged world of the Vikings. Ragnar Lodbrok, the legendary Viking king of the 9th century, sits majestically at the centre. His gilded helmet with intricate Celtic ornamentation rises plastically from the coin's surface – an effect made possible only by the innovative High Relief minting. He is flanked by his famous sons: Ivar the Boneless to the left and Björn Ironside to the right. Their resolute facial expressions and detailed beards bear witness to the extraordinary craftsmanship of the engravers.

The partially gilded sword that Ragnar holds in his hands breaks through the coin's plane, lending the design an almost three-dimensional effect. In the background, the attentive observer can make out the sacred halls of Valhalla – that mythical place where fallen warriors find their eternal rest. The inscription "SAVAGE VIKINGS" crowns this masterful composition.

The Reverse: A Journey Across Stormy Seas

Turn the coin over and another work of breathtaking beauty is revealed. A typical Viking longship cuts through the churning sea, its sails filled taut with wind. On board stands Ivar the Boneless, a sharpened axe at the ready in his hands. The waves seem to truly come alive – so realistically has the smartminting® technology captured the rough sea. Traditional Nordic ornaments frame the scene and lend it additional depth.

"Ragnar Lodbrok received his nickname 'Shaggy Breeches' from the tar-treated clothing that protected him from snake bites – an irony of fate, for according to legend he died in a snake pit."

Technical Perfection Meets Historical Fascination

This silver coin from B.H. Mayer combines several special features that make it so desirable for collectors:

  1. The Proof quality guarantees mirror-like surfaces and frosted reliefs of the highest brilliance
  2. The ultra-high relief achieved through smartminting® technology creates a sculptural depth that far surpasses conventional minting
  3. The partial gilding of the helmet and sword hilt sets golden accents against the silver background
  4. With a diameter of 45 mm, the coin offers ample space for the detailed design

An Investment with History and a Future

Silver has proven itself as a store of value over millennia. This limited edition combines the intrinsic value of the precious metal with the collector's value of a numismatic rarity. The mintage of only 500 pieces worldwide creates a natural scarcity that, based on experience, increases desirability among collectors. Profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year – a further advantage for the long-term oriented collector.

The coin is delivered in a high-quality case that ensures both protection and an appropriate presentation. As an inflation hedge and crisis protection, silver has always offered security in uncertain times.

Who Is This Coin Suitable For?

The Savage Vikings 2026 appeals to various collector groups: enthusiasts of Nordic mythology will be captivated by the true-to-detail depiction. Numismatists appreciate the technical perfection and the strict mintage limit. And anyone wishing to complete the entire Legends series cannot pass up this crowning conclusion.
