The sundial is the oldest known timekeeping instrument in human history. As far back as ancient Egypt, people read the hours from the moving shadow of a rod. The Royal Canadian Mint has translated this ancient principle into precious metal – creating one of the most extraordinary silver coins of the 2026 vintage. Anyone who holds it in their hand immediately senses: this is no ordinary coin. This is a small work of art.

A design that rises from the surface

On the reverse, a three-dimensional, rhodium-plated gnomon rises up – the pointer that casts the shadow on a sundial. Elegantly curved volutes adorn its back. It is anchored on a finely structured compass rose, which in turn rests on a globe marked with longitude and latitude lines. Surrounding it is a wreath of arches with delicate leaf motifs, above which an hour scale with Roman numerals runs from VI through XII to VI. A subtle vine ornament closes off the design at the bottom.

The rhodium plating gives the gnomon a bright, noble shine that harmonises wonderfully with the various matte finishes and mirror-like surfaces of the Proof strike. As is customary with current Canadian issues, the obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III, the face value of 20 dollars, and the year of issue 2026.

The Royal Canadian Mint presented its first functional sundial coin for the 2025 vintage – a premiere for the storied mint, limited to just 5,000 pieces and long since sold out. The 2026 issue continues this fascinating idea with an entirely new design.

Why this rarity delights collectors

With its very low mintage, this issue is strictly limited worldwide. Once sold out, it will only be available on the secondary market. This is precisely where its appeal lies: scarcity, a unique 3D design, and origin from one of the most innovative mints in the world. This results in high value appreciation potential – although with precious metals, there is never a guarantee of future performance.

Compared to the classic Maple Leaf, which is minted as a bullion coin in the millions, the Sundial plays in a completely different league. The Maple Leaf scores points with a low premium close to the pure material value. This collector's coin, on the other hand, combines the value of an ounce of silver with numismatic rarity, artistic craftsmanship, and premium presentation. For pure investors, the Maple Leaf is the sensible choice. For collectors seeking something special, the Sundial is by far the more exciting option.

Silver: preserving value with a long tradition

Silver has accompanied humanity for millennia as a monetary metal. The Greeks, Romans, and later the Spanish colonial empires minted it into coins, and numerous cultures saw it as a symbol of prosperity and prestige. Unlike paper money, which relies solely on trust in governments, silver has intrinsic value. It is durable, tradeable worldwide, and highly liquid.

At the same time, the white metal is an indispensable industrial raw material. Electronics, photovoltaics, and medical technology require it in growing quantities, while supply remains limited. Not least for this reason, many people value silver as an inflation hedge and as reliable crisis protection in politically and economically turbulent times. And because it is considerably more affordable than gold, it offers you an easy entry into the world of precious metals.

Another advantage: in Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This makes a silver coin like this one an excellent lasting asset that you can pass on to the next generation.

Securely packaged and certified

The coin is delivered in a stylish case, together with a certificate of authenticity. The certificate documents its provenance – an important aspect should you wish to expand or sell your collection later on. Our tip: avoid touching the mirrored surfaces with bare fingers whenever possible, and store the coin in its original packaging. This will keep it in pristine condition for the long term.
