The series

One animal a year since 1996

In 1996 The Perth Mint became the first mint to release an Australian lunar programme, as it states. Each series follows the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: Lunar I from 1996 to 2007, Lunar II from 2008 to 2019, Lunar III from 2020 to 2031.

Each year one animal is added, and the snake, the horse and the goat each have separate designs for gold and silver. The snake is the sixth animal of Lunar III, the horse the seventh, the goat the eighth.

Since the snake of 2025, the effigy side has shown King Charles III, portrayed by Dan Thorne.

The mint

The P of Perth

The Perth Mint was founded in a gold rush. In 1892 a find near Coolgardie set off Australia’s second great gold rush of the 19th century. Premier Sir John Forrest did not want the gold to leave Western Australia for processing and secured a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth.

On 20 June 1899 the first gold was processed and struck there, and The Perth Mint has operated continuously on the same site in East Perth ever since. The sovereigns from Perth carried a small P above the date.

The designs of the snake, the horse and the goat also bear a P, as The Perth Mint’s mintmark. Today it is owned by the State of Western Australia.

A Masterpiece of Minting Art from Down Under

The obverse of this extraordinary coin features a breathtaking coloured design: two majestic horses in full motion, whose warm brown tones create a fascinating contrast to the gleaming silver. The larger horse, with its flowing dark mane, seems to leap right out of the coin, while the smaller foal beside it rears up playfully. The Chinese character for "horse" along with the English inscription "HORSE 2026" complete this artistic arrangement. The "P" mintmark of the Perth Mint attests to its noble origin.

The reverse presents the official portrait of King Charles III in classic profile view. The inscription "CHARLES III AUSTRALIA" along with the specifications "1 KILO 9999 Ag" and "30 DOLLARS" underline the official character of this Australian bullion coin.

Why This Coin Is Indispensable for Collectors

The Perth Mint's Lunar Series III enjoys a legendary reputation among collectors and numismatists worldwide. Each year, a new issue is dedicated to one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. The year 2026 is the year of the horse – a symbol of strength, freedom, and success in Asian culture.

The coloured version in the imposing 1kg denomination represents the absolute pinnacle. While the regular issues appear in significantly higher mintages, this colour-finished collector's coin is limited to just 2,000 examples.

Silver has proven itself as a store of value over millennia. It possesses an intrinsic value that is further supported by its diverse industrial applications – from electronics and solar technology to medicine. The limited availability of this precious metal ensures long-term value stability. Furthermore: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

Since 1899, the Perth Mint in Western Australia has been striking coins of unparalleled quality. As one of the most renowned mints in the world, it stands for precision, innovation, and artistic excellence. The Lunar series have significantly contributed to the international fame of the mint and are an indispensable part of any serious collection.

This 1kg Silver Lunar III Horse 2026 combines everything that makes collectors' hearts beat faster: a fascinating coloured design, a full kilogram of purest silver, the very low mintage, and the unmistakable hallmark of the Perth Mint.
