The classic kangaroo
A kangaroo in a sunburst
The silver coin bears a fixed design which, according to The Perth Mint, is based on the kangaroo Stuart Devlin created for the Australian Nugget of 1989: a kangaroo in mid-leap, ringed by stylised rays of sunlight.

The name
Why it is called Nugget
The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.
This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.
Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series
One design since 2016
The silver bullion coin has kept its design since it first appeared in 2016: the classic kangaroo in a sunburst. On the gold bullion coins up to one ounce, the kangaroo changes every year.
There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

Why invest in the Silver Kangaroo 2026 right now?
In times of economic uncertainty, smart investors seek out stable assets. Silver has proven itself as a reliable store of value for thousands of years. Industrial demand is virtually exploding – from electronics to solar technology to medicine. At the same time, natural reserves are limited. This combination creates a fascinating field of tension for investors.
Particularly pleasing: profits from the sale of silver are completely tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This makes this gleaming beauty an even more attractive investment.
The perfect balance between a passion for collecting and smart provisioning
The Silver Kangaroo Nugget 2026 appeals to both sides of your investor soul. Collectors appreciate the iconic kangaroo design and its limited availability. Investors rely on the intrinsic value of the precious metal and its function as a crisis currency.
- High liquidity: Recognized worldwide and tradable at any time
- Physical ownership: Your wealth lies tangibly in your hands
- Generational wealth: Perfectly suited for passing on to children and grandchildren
- Portfolio diversification: Low correlation to other asset classes
A royal investment with Australian charm
The reverse is adorned with the portrait of King Charles III – a symbol of tradition and continuity. This royal touch gives the coin additional dignity and underscores its status as official currency with a face value of 1 AUD.
Yet it is the leaping kangaroo on the obverse that truly makes hearts race. Captured in full motion, it radiates a dynamism that perfectly matches the value appreciation many experts predict for silver. The radially arranged rays in the background amplify this effect, making the kangaroo appear to leap right out of the coin.
Technical perfection meets emotional connection
