Royal Canadian Mint

A leaf, unchanged since 1979.

Side with the maple leaf, CANADA above it and the weight and fineness in English and French along the rimSide with the portrait of King Charles III and the face value and year below it

You are looking at the side with the maple leaf.

The maple leaf was designed by the engraver Walter Ott for the first Gold Maple Leaf of 1979. According to the Royal Canadian Mint, it has remained unchanged ever since.

The Gold Maple Leaf was intended as a three-year trial. It was so successful that in 1981 the Canadian Parliament decided to issue it permanently.

9999

This is how it appears beside the leaf: 99.99 per cent fine gold. In 1982, according to the Mint, the Gold Maple Leaf was the world’s first bullion coin of this purity.

What lies in the details

The small laser leaf, enlarged from the product photo. The number at its centre only shows under stronger magnification.

Below the large leaf sits a small maple leaf, micro-engraved by laser. At its centre is the number 26 for the year of issue, visible only under magnification.

Every die bears this mark. The Mint captures it under a microscope and stores it in encrypted form. A verification device later reads it like a fingerprint and matches the coin to its die.

The fine lines in the field are machined on the master tooling to micrometre precision, so that they turn out the same on every coin. The width and spacing of the lines create a pattern that refracts the light and is characteristic of this coin.

A leaf through the decades

  1. 1908

    A home in Ottawa

The Mint in Ottawa is ready in November 1907. Its head, James Bonar, nevertheless waits until the security fence is in place. Striking therefore only begins on 2 January 1908.

  2. 1965

    The leaf on the flag

On 15 February, Canada’s new national flag with the maple leaf is raised on Parliament Hill for the first time. Maple leaves have appeared on Canadian cent coins ever since the 1850s.

  3. 1988

    The Silver Maple Leaf

It joins the gold coin. According to the Mint, it is the world’s first bullion coin made of 99.99 per cent silver.

  4. 2007

    Five nines

The Mint issues its first bullion coin made of 99.999 per cent gold.

  5. 2024

    A new portrait

Since the 2024 issue, the Maple Leaf bullion coins have borne the effigy of King Charles III.

The motif

Leaf and portrait

The sugar maple
Its sap is particularly rich in sugar, which is why maple syrup producers value it.
Two languages
CANADA appears above the leaf. Along the rim, the weight and purity are given in English and French: FINE GOLD and OR PUR.
King Charles III
The portrait was created by Steven Rosati of Montreal. The Mint had invited more than 350 artists for the task.
Facing left
Elizabeth II faced right, the King faces left: by long-standing tradition, the direction of the gaze changes with each monarch.

A country has placed the maple leaf on its flag.

You hold it in gold.

Since 1996, the maple has also been Canada’s national arboreal emblem. Ten species of maple are native to the country, and one of their leaves accompanies you with this coin.

Ten ounces of pure gold. In a single tube. This is no ordinary purchase – it is a decision. A decision for substance, for permanence, for a precious metal that has preserved its value for over 6,000 years while paper currencies came and went like the seasons. With the investor package 10 x 1 Ounce Gold Maple Leaf 2026, you secure ten specimens of arguably the world's most famous gold coins – Brilliant Uncirculated and in the original coin tube from the Royal Canadian Mint.

The Maple Leaf: An Icon Among Bullion Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint has been striking the Gold Maple Leaf since 1979. Since then, this coin has developed into one of the most widely traded gold investment products in the world. And for good reason: with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, the Maple Leaf ranks among the purest gold coins in existence. For comparison – the South African Krugerrand achieves "only" 916.7/1,000. Those seeking maximum purity will find their perfect companion in the Maple Leaf.

The design side features the world-famous Canadian maple leaf in breathtaking detail. Fine lines radiate from the centre outward, while the leaf veins are rendered with an almost photographic precision. In the lower right, one can spot the tiny security maple leaf – a micro-engraving element that serves as an anti-counterfeiting measure. The inscriptions "CANADA", "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR" and the fineness designation "9999" frame the design. On the face value side, the portrait of King Charles III reigns in side profile, accompanied by the year 2026 and the face value "50 DOLLARS".

The Original Coin Tube – More Than Just Packaging

This set is delivered in the original coin tube from the Royal Canadian Mint. The transparent plastic body with its distinctive red lid bearing the mint's emblem reliably protects your ten Maple Leaf coins from scratches, moisture and contamination. For investors who place value on the Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this storage solution is indispensable – as the condition of a coin can certainly play a role when selling at a later date.

"Gold is money. Everything else is credit." – J.P. Morgan

Why Ten Ounces at Once?

Anyone can buy individual coins. But those who think strategically, who wish to seriously protect their wealth, reach for the investor package. And there are solid reasons for this:

  1. Cost efficiency: With larger quantities, you generally benefit from lower premiums per ounce compared to buying individually.
  2. Free shipping: This package is delivered to you at no additional shipping cost via insured shipping.
  3. Practical storage: Ten coins, one tube – compact, secure, and well-organised.
  4. Flexibility: Unlike a 10-ounce bar, you can sell, gift or exchange individual coins separately without having to liquidate the entire investment.

It is precisely this last point that makes the decisive difference compared to a comparable gold bar. While a 10 oz bar can only change hands as a whole, ten individual Maple Leaf coins offer you maximum divisibility. In times of economic uncertainty – when gold could be in demand as a medium of exchange – this denomination is worth its weight in gold. In the truest sense of the word.

Gold – Humanity's Oldest Insurance

Let that sink in for a moment: over more than six millennia, gold has never had a value of zero. Not a single paper currency can claim the same. Not the US dollar, not the euro, not the Deutsche Mark. While central banks around the world print money – thereby diluting its purchasing power – the supply of gold remains naturally limited. It cannot be printed, copied or inflated.

Incidentally: the world's largest holders of gold are the central banks themselves. What does that say about their confidence in their own fiat money? Exactly. Those who are wise follow the example of those who should know – and secure a portion of their wealth in physical gold.
