Krugerrand · 2026 Issue

The leap that began in 1967.

Side with the springbok in mid-leap, KRUGERRAND above it and the year 2026 to the left and rightSide with the portrait of Paul Kruger and the legend SUID-AFRIKA SOUTH AFRICA

You are looking at the side with the springbok.

Gold for the hands of ordinary people.

In the late 1960s, around three quarters of the western world’s gold came from South Africa. The Chamber of Mines wanted ordinary people, too, to be able to own gold.

With the Krugerrand, a new kind of coin came into being for this purpose: exactly one ounce of fine gold, with no face value struck on it. Its value was meant to come directly from the gold it contains.

6,012,293

Krugerrand bullion coins were issued in 1978 alone, 187 tonnes of gold in all.

A leap through history

  1. 1886

    Gold on the Witwatersrand

On the Witwatersrand, the ridge of white water, rich gold deposits are discovered. South Africa’s currency is also named after it: the rand.

  2. 1947

    The springbok

The sculptor Coert Steynberg draws his springbok in 1946 and 1947. It first appears in 1947 on the 5-shilling coin marking the visit of the British royal family.

  3. 1967

    The first Krugerrand

On 3 July, commissioned by the South African Reserve Bank and the Chamber of Mines, the South African Mint strikes the first Krugerrand.

  4. 1980

    Smaller sizes

The half ounce, the quarter ounce and the tenth ounce are added so that smaller sums can also be invested in gold.

  5. 2017

    Fifty years

For the anniversary, the first silver Krugerrand appears, along with the 1/20 and 1/50 ounce in gold. For these coins, the designers go back to the original wax models and designs.

The motif

The springbok and the president

The springbok
South Africa’s national animal in mid-leap. The springbok owes its name to its characteristic leaps. It was designed by the sculptor Coert Steynberg.
The aloe
The motif includes an Aloe claviflora, one of South Africa’s best-known aloes. It grows in the dry interior of the country, where the springbok is also at home.
Fyngoud
Below the springbok is the fine gold content, framed by FYNGOUD in Afrikaans and FINE GOLD in English. Fyngoud means fine gold.
Paul Kruger
The other side shows Paul Kruger in profile. In 1883 he became president of the South African Republic, also known as the Transvaal. The portrait was created by the die engraver Otto Schultz. According to the South African Mint, it goes back to the Kruger half-crown of 1892.
The name
Krugerrand combines the name Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency.

11/12 fine gold1/12 copper

The alloy

Eleven parts gold, one part copper

The Krugerrand is made of 22-carat gold: eleven twelfths fine gold and one twelfth copper. The copper makes the coin harder and more resistant to scratches. It also gives the coin its warm, reddish sheen.

Every coin contains its full weight in fine gold, and the copper is added on top. That is why the one-ounce coin weighs 33.93 grams and yet contains exactly one ounce of fine gold.

The South African Mint produces the bullion coins together with the Rand Refinery. The refinery in Germiston was founded in 1920 so that South Africa’s gold no longer had to be shipped to London for refining. There, refined gold is cast into strips, rolled and punched into coin blanks.

The same leap since 1967.

Only the year is new.

By its 50th anniversary in 2017, more than 60 million Krugerrands had been sold. The 2026 issue carries this story forward, in your hand and perhaps one day in the hand of someone you pass it on to.

50 coins, each with 7.78 g of fine gold.

Why exactly 50 x 1/4 ounce? The magic of small denominations

There's a reason why experienced precious metals buyers repeatedly reach for small denominations of gold: flexibility. A 1 ounce coin is a heavyweight – beautiful, but difficult to "split" in an emergency. The 1/4 ounce, on the other hand, fits into any wallet, can be transported discreetly, and is a recognised medium of exchange in almost any emergency situation – whether at home or far abroad. With 50 of these coins in hand, you hold a true bulwark against crises of every kind.

"Gold is the oldest currency in human history – and the only one that has never fallen to zero."

Crisis protection at the highest level

Pandemics, geopolitical tensions, wobbling banks, galloping currency devaluation – the list of risks is long. That's precisely why physical gold has been the proven anchor for millennia for all those who wish to remain independent. This package is crisis protection in its purest form: 50 globally tradable coins, liquid at any time, exempt from VAT, and in Germany even tax-free upon resale after a holding period of one year.

Inflation protection that has worked for millennia

While paper money can be multiplied almost at will by central banks, the amount of gold on Earth is strictly limited. This crucial difference makes gold the natural inflation hedge. It is not without reason that central banks worldwide have been consistently building up their gold reserves for years – a telling signal to anyone who can read between the lines.

The Krugerrand – a legend since 1967

For almost six decades, the Krugerrand has been the benchmark among gold bullion coins. Over two-thirds of all gold coins traded worldwide were accounted for by this South African classic in some decades. The distinctive copper alloy ensures that the coins show hardly any signs of wear even after decades of storage – a practical advantage over coins made of pure fine gold such as the Vienna Philharmonic or the Maple Leaf, which are considerably more delicate.

The coin tube – cleverly packaged, perfectly stored

The included original Rand Refinery coin tube is more than just a casing: it protects the 50 coins from scratches, dust and moisture, can be stacked space-savingly, and the lid is adorned with the manufacturer's emblem. This way, your treasure remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition – today, tomorrow and for generations to come.

Who is this investor package suited for?

  1. For forward-thinking investors who want to secure their wealth in one go with a genuine tangible asset
  2. For collectors who want to own a complete year of issue in top condition
  3. For families who want to build their retirement provisions independently of the banking system
  4. For anyone who wants to specifically balance their silver holdings with gold as the complement to the "big sister" silver

With the 50 x 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand 2026, you're not simply securing coins – you're securing a piece of financial sovereignty. Free of shipping costs, with secure insured shipping, and Brilliant Uncirculated straight from the Rand Refinery. While stocks last.
