Krugerrand · 2026 Issue

The leap that began in 1967.

Side with the springbok in mid-leap, KRUGERRAND above it and the year 2026 to the left and rightSide with the portrait of Paul Kruger and the legend SUID-AFRIKA SOUTH AFRICA

You are looking at the side with the springbok.

Gold for the hands of ordinary people.

In the late 1960s, around three quarters of the western world’s gold came from South Africa. The Chamber of Mines wanted ordinary people, too, to be able to own gold.

With the Krugerrand, a new kind of coin came into being for this purpose: exactly one ounce of fine gold, with no face value struck on it. Its value was meant to come directly from the gold it contains.

6,012,293

Krugerrand bullion coins were issued in 1978 alone, 187 tonnes of gold in all.

A leap through history

  1. 1886

    Gold on the Witwatersrand

On the Witwatersrand, the ridge of white water, rich gold deposits are discovered. South Africa’s currency is also named after it: the rand.

  2. 1947

    The springbok

The sculptor Coert Steynberg draws his springbok in 1946 and 1947. It first appears in 1947 on the 5-shilling coin marking the visit of the British royal family.

  3. 1967

    The first Krugerrand

On 3 July, commissioned by the South African Reserve Bank and the Chamber of Mines, the South African Mint strikes the first Krugerrand.

  4. 1980

    Smaller sizes

The half ounce, the quarter ounce and the tenth ounce are added so that smaller sums can also be invested in gold.

  5. 2017

    Fifty years

For the anniversary, the first silver Krugerrand appears, along with the 1/20 and 1/50 ounce in gold. For these coins, the designers go back to the original wax models and designs.

The motif

The springbok and the president

The springbok
South Africa’s national animal in mid-leap. The springbok owes its name to its characteristic leaps. It was designed by the sculptor Coert Steynberg.
The aloe
The motif includes an Aloe claviflora, one of South Africa’s best-known aloes. It grows in the dry interior of the country, where the springbok is also at home.
Fyngoud
Below the springbok is the fine gold content, framed by FYNGOUD in Afrikaans and FINE GOLD in English. Fyngoud means fine gold.
Paul Kruger
The other side shows Paul Kruger in profile. In 1883 he became president of the South African Republic, also known as the Transvaal. The portrait was created by the die engraver Otto Schultz. According to the South African Mint, it goes back to the Kruger half-crown of 1892.
The name
Krugerrand combines the name Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency.

The alloy

Eleven parts gold, one part copper

The Krugerrand is made of 22-carat gold: eleven twelfths fine gold and one twelfth copper. The copper makes the coin harder and more resistant to scratches. It also gives the coin its warm, reddish sheen.

Every coin contains its full weight in fine gold, and the copper is added on top. That is why the one-ounce coin weighs 33.93 grams and yet contains exactly one ounce of fine gold.

The South African Mint produces the bullion coins together with the Rand Refinery. The refinery in Germiston was founded in 1920 so that South Africa’s gold no longer had to be shipped to London for refining. There, refined gold is cast into strips, rolled and punched into coin blanks.

The same leap since 1967.

Only the year is new.

By its 50th anniversary in 2017, more than 60 million Krugerrands had been sold. The 2026 issue carries this story forward, in your hand and perhaps one day in the hand of someone you pass it on to.

15 coins, each with 15.55 g of fine gold.

Why the Half Ounce? The Advantage of Small Denominations

A full ounce is impressive – but anyone who wants to stay flexible swears by small denominations. This is exactly where the half Krugerrand shows its strengths. It's compact, valuable, and easily divisible when needed. Coins like these can be carried almost inconspicuously in a wallet while traveling, serve as a discreet means of exchange in emergency situations – whether at home or abroad – and offer precisely the granularity that defines real crisis preparedness.

"Anyone who owns gold in small units doesn't just own value – they own freedom of action."

Crisis Protection with History: The Krugerrand 2026

Since 1967, Rand Refinery has minted the Krugerrand – and it has been the benchmark in the bullion coin segment ever since. For more than half a century, it has proven itself a reliable companion through periods of inflation, currency reforms, and political upheaval. The 2026 edition continues this tradition in Brilliant Uncirculated quality: sharp contours, a vividly depicted Springbok in full gallop, and the distinctive profile of Paul Kruger, framed by the inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA".

The Coin Tube – More Than Just Packaging

The sturdy coin tube is included in the scope of delivery. It protects the 15 gold pieces from scratches, pressure marks, and environmental influences. Tubes of this kind are the classic packaging method supplied by the mint – and they make transporting and storing your treasures particularly secure. Anyone who has ever held a fully packed tube in their hands knows: this is concentrated value in the smallest of spaces.

Krugerrand vs. Other Bullion Coins

How does the half Krugerrand compare to the Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, or Britannia? While other bullion coins often come with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, the Krugerrand stands out with its 22-karat alloy. This means:

  1. Higher scratch resistance – ideal for passing from hand to hand
  2. A characteristic warm gold tone that makes it unmistakable
  3. Worldwide acceptance – hardly any coin is as well known as the Krugerrand
  4. The fine gold content corresponds exactly to 1/2 ounce – the pure silver and gold weight is guaranteed

Tax Benefits and Long-Term Wealth Preservation

Investment gold is exempt from VAT in Germany – a clear advantage over many other tangible assets. In addition, profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of one year. These conditions make the investor package of 15 half Krugerrand coins particularly attractive for anyone thinking long-term: retirement planning, transferring wealth to the next generation, or simply building a solid foundation for turbulent times.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency. It has outlived every paper currency, has never been worth zero, and will not lose its shine in the future either. The world's central banks hold gigantic gold reserves – a clear signal of the trust they themselves place in the yellow precious metal. Secure your share of this timeless store of value and enjoy the certainty of holding a genuine tangible asset in your hands.
