The call
In chorus with the family
koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa
In German it is also called Lachender Hans, “laughing Hans”. But what sounds like laughter is a territorial call: it warns other birds to stay away, as the Australian Museum writes.
The family often calls in chorus, above all at dawn and dusk. This is how it tells other kookaburras that its territory is occupied.
In the breeding season other kookaburras help out, usually young birds from the previous one to two years. Everyone in the group shares the rearing, and the parents are believed to pair for life.
At around 42 centimetres and 340 grams on average, it is one of the largest kingfishers. It lives almost everywhere in eastern Australia where suitable trees grow.
The perch
It waits quietly on a perch with a good view, then drops straight down.
Under the loupe
The side with the kookaburra carries the weight, fineness and year, together with the mintmark of the Perth Mint.
On the other side: the effigy of King Charles III by Dan Thorne. The design is by Sean Rogers.

How the years show it
Since 1990 the silver coin has carried the kookaburra, almost every year with a new design. The first was created by Stuart Devlin, who also designed Australia’s first decimal coins of 1966. Here are the years from our range.

The image stands out
For the high relief, the Perth Mint strikes with an extra deep die, and the design stands clearly raised above the field. Along with it comes the proof finish with its mirrored field, as the image shows.

Fascinating Detail Through High Relief Technique
The spectacular High Relief striking lends the majestic Kookaburra an impressive three-dimensionality. Every single feather seems to literally emerge from the gold. This elaborate striking technique makes the coin a tactile experience – you will want to pick it up again and again to feel the raised details. The characteristic laugh of the Kookaburra, captured in purest gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000, is brought to perfection by the Proof quality.
"A strictly limited mintage of this kind for an established series like the Kookaburra is exceptionally rare. Collectors worldwide will be competing for these 150 specimens."
Investment Highlights of This Collector's Coin
- Extremely low mintage of only 150 pieces guarantees absolute rarity
- High Relief striking significantly increases collector value
- Established Kookaburra series with a worldwide collector base
- Perth Mint as a guarantor of the highest quality standards
- Perfect size with 27.60 mm diameter for optimal detail presentation
The Perth Mint has set new benchmarks with this collector's coin. While regular Kookaburra issues are struck in significantly higher quantities, the very low mintage makes this issue a highly sought-after collector's piece. The appreciation potential is correspondingly remarkable – comparable limited issues from the past impressively demonstrate what price developments are possible.
Technical Perfection Meets Artistic Brilliance
With a fine weight of exactly one ounce (31.10 g) and the highest purity level of 999.9/1,000, this gold coin meets all the requirements of a first-class collector's item. The Proof quality ensures mirror-smooth surfaces on which the relief of the Kookaburra stands out with particular plasticity. Presented in an elegant case, this rarity is a worthy centrepiece of any discerning collection.
The face value of 100 AUD underscores its official status as legal tender in Australia. Yet the true value lies in its extreme scarcity: Only 150 pieces for collectors worldwide – a number that is vanishingly small given the global Kookaburra fan base. This limitation makes every individual owner a privileged member of a very exclusive circle.
Why This Particular Kookaburra Issue?

- Perfect combination of an established design series and innovative striking technique
