The bar reads “seit 1850” (since 1850); the house has carried the name C. Hafner since 1869.
The name
The C. stands for Carl.
In 1869, Carl Hafner carries on the sweepings works under his own name: C. Hafner. A reference from his apprenticeship values him for his “loyalty, honesty, love of work and morality”, in the words of his time.
Today, descendants of Carl Hafner run the house in the fifth generation; since 1995, Birgitta Hafner and her cousin Dr. Philipp Reisert have led it together. As its guiding principle, the house names the honourable merchant.
“We have a good name, but it only stays as good as it stands up to external scrutiny.”
- LBMAOn the Good Delivery List of the London Bullion Market Association since 2013, for gold.
- RJCCertified by the Responsible Jewellery Council to the Code of Practices and Chain of Custody, first in 2016, valid until 7 April 2028.
The assay
If it enters the house,it is tested.
In 1892 the Carl Dieterle assay office joins the house. The assay laboratory works with docimasy, according to C.Hafner the oldest known method of determining the fineness of gold alloys.
Every delivery is analysed. If it is melted down into a bar, that bar is drilled and the drillings are tested for their precious metal content. For the fire assay, a report from 2025 gives two to three days.
The laboratory is accredited by DAkkS as a testing laboratory to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, for determining fine metals in precious metal alloys, and it takes part in international proficiency tests.

Those who regularly buy small quantities spread their entry over time and automatically average out the purchase price.
A Piece of German Precious Metals Tradition Since 1850
The family business C. Hafner, based in Wimsheim near the gold city of Pforzheim, has existed since 1850, and has carried the name C. Hafner since 1869. As a recognized gold and silver refinery, C. Hafner sources its gold exclusively from recycled secondary material and has been producing CO2-neutrally since 2019. This makes the bar ecologically and ethically impeccable – without newly mined gold. Since 2013, the company has also held the coveted LBMA Good Delivery Refiner status. This seal of quality guarantees the highest purity and makes the bars fully tradeable with banks worldwide – a tangible advantage upon later resale, as recognized fine gold bars can typically be sold without deductions.
Minting Quality You Can See
The rectangular, minted bar shows the lettering "C.HAFNER" with the company's own emblem on the obverse, below which are "seit 1850" and "GERMANY". In the lower area are the details "0.5 g", "FEINGOLD" and "999.9". The finely structured micro-surface not only underscores the high minting quality from German production but also makes counterfeiting and manipulation more difficult. On the reverse, the individual, six-digit serial number is embossed, making each bar uniquely identifiable.
Securely Packaged in a CertiCard Blister
The bar is delivered as brand-new, Brilliant Uncirculated merchandise in a sealed CertiCard blister card. This permanently protects the fine gold and simultaneously serves as a certificate of authenticity: fineness, weight, and the serial number are indicated directly on the card, and a UV seal confirms the integrity of the packaging prior to opening. This way, the small bar retains its flawless condition for years and can be passed on or resold at any time without complication.
Gold as Inflation and Crisis Protection
Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero, because it possesses an inherent, intrinsic value. As an inflation hedge, physical gold preserves your purchasing power when fiat money loses value through the printing press. The small 0.5 g denomination in particular makes this bar a practical building block for crisis protection – as a handy, divisible medium of exchange for everyday transactions in uncertain times. It is not without reason that the world's central banks hold gigantic gold reserves: they trust their own paper money less and less. Gold has high liquidity, is recognized worldwide, and can be converted back into cash at any time if needed.
Why the Small Denomination Convinces
Small bars like this 0.5-gram fine gold bar offer maximum flexibility: they can be purchased even with a small budget and can be resold in portions, without having to sell an entire ounce at once. Those who prefer to buy larger units will also find 1 g, 5 g, or 10 g bars at C. Hafner – as a general rule, the premium per gram decreases as the weight increases. The 0.5-gram variant, on the other hand, plays to its strength in divisibility and represents the lowest possible threshold for entry into your own gold reserve.
Giving Investment Gold as a Gift
Would you like to give a genuine investment as a gift for a birthday, christening, or wedding? Despite the personal occasion, what you are purchasing here is full-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold, whose value is based on the gold price. Small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable fortune and can be passed down through generations. By the way: physical gold is exempt from VAT at the time of purchase, and profits from its sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
