A family business headquartered in Hanau. Its roots go back to a pharmacy that the family ran from 1660 onwards.

The emblem

The hand with the roses

The emblem, enlarged from the photo of the one-kilogram cast gold bar.

Heraeus bars bear a round emblem with the legend HERAEUS EDELMETALLE HANAU. A hand grasps the stems of three roses, with an H beside it.

The hand with the roses comes from the Heraeus family coat of arms, of which the emblem shows only a part. The family chronicle suggests that the apothecary Isaac Heraeus chose the motif in memory of his birthplace, Güstrow.

From the unicorn to the flame

  1. 1668

    “Zum weißen Einhorn”

On the market square of Hanau’s New Town, Isaac Heraeus opens his own pharmacy in a half-timbered house and names it “Zum weißen Einhorn”, the White Unicorn.

  2. 1694

    The first gold

His son, Franz Heraeus, supplies fine gold used to gild the letters, the ball and the weathercock of the French church in Hanau. Heraeus calls this the first contact with precious metals in its history.

  3. 1856

    Germany’s first platinum melt

Platinum is much sought after in jewellery making, but until then it can only be forged and pressed when white-hot. After lengthy experiments, Wilhelm Carl Heraeus melts two kilograms of platinum with an oxyhydrogen blowpipe.

    1768 °C

Platinum does not melt until it reaches this temperature.

  4. 1945

    Destruction and a new beginning

Air raids in 1944 and 1945 almost completely destroy the works in Hanau, and on 19 March 1945 the original pharmacy building as well. After the war, Heraeus at first makes cooking pots, hotplates and immersion heaters. Above the entrance of the original building, rebuilt in 1951 and 1952, a bronze unicorn has recalled the pharmacy ever since.

  5. 2025

    365 years

The family celebrates “365 years of Heraeus”. The company still belongs to the family today.

Assayed in Switzerland

The signature on the card

In our product photos, the card shows the fineness and the weight, the line “Vereidigter Edelmetallprüfer” (sworn assayer) with the signature Ruffoni, and the round seal of Argor-Heraeus with the word Switzerland.

Alessandro Ruffoni had been a sworn assayer at Argor-Heraeus since 1991, licensed by the Swiss Central Office for Precious Metals Control. His signature appeared on the certificates of bars from Argor-Heraeus and from Heraeus. After his retirement in 2023, it was gradually replaced by that of Simone Marsan.

Argor was founded in Ticino in 1951. The name combines argento and oro, the Italian words for silver and gold.
